I just recently watched season 3 and 4 to try and get into the old series, i did pick up season 1 upon release but wasn't really compelled to buy the rest i found the first series to be pretty dull and slow moving and repeating the same plot pretty much every episode. You got gangsters trying to get rid of Superman and with no actual comic book villain's it becomes pretty tedious.
I know people love the series because it has that film noir feel to it especially season 2 but Superman in Black and White doesn't work for me. I found the later seasons to be more enjoyable but they still had the same plot premise of the gangsters trying to kill Superman. its funny watching it because George Reeves does seem to be getting and fatter and fatter during the course of the seasons, his pants are so high its hilarious. I still need to watch Seasons 5 and 6 which i hear tries to more serious and has more comic book villains like Robots which i read on wikipedia.
I think George Reeves was a really good actor and he excelled as Clark Kent but his Superman was a little stale, i suppose at the time in the comics the writers didn't really address the difference between clark and Supe's he just had the glasses on so it fooled everyone!.
Noel Neil i think looked the part of Lois but she didn't sound like Lois to me and her role was poorly characterized on the show. She doesn't seem that tough or much of a reporter she just seems to tag along and gets into danger due to the same plot point that is repeating throughout the series.
Anyone else tried to get into the old series?..

Big fan, especially of the earlier seasons. Reeves (before he started showing his age) just radiates charisma and confidence both as Superman AND Clark. I love that often, the show is a standard crime/thriller show that just happens to feature Superman, as opposed to each plot being built specifically around him.

As a kid, I would watch AoS whenever I couldn't watch the Reeve movies.
I love Reeves. He had that twinkle in his eye and exuded such confidence.
I loved the episode where the man and woman discover Superman's identity and that chainsmoking pal of Superman, who plywd it really cool.

Yeah, the Stolen Costume love that ep. also Crime Wave. Geez, the whole 1st season was great. the acting was top notch and the scripts were great. They weren't kid fare that's for sure. Love the rest of the series too, but nothing tops the black n white era. George, Phyllis, John and Jack were a great team.

I love this series. Every few years, I get nostalgic for them and have a marathon viewing session lasting several days where I go through every episode again. I would highly recommend buying the companion book that was published a few years ago. Nice glossy pages with tons of rare photographs and a detailed analysis of every episode with lots of trivia. 352 pages in length and about 9"x12" in size. It's fun to watch the episodes as you read the behind the scenes info from the book. Well worth it and the author sells it directly through ebay; cgi.ebay.com/George-Reeves-Superman-BOOK-FREE-CD-/190378543784?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item2c53720aa8

HUGE fan of the b/w eps; Reeves was brilliant as both characters. I love how tough his CK was. Awesome music too.
Colour eps were aimed more at younger children. Season 3/4 boxset was especially disappointing. Just have Lois and Jimmy get in trouble and get rescued at the end.
5/6 eps were campy and ridiculous but more entertaining.

The music was ok for the show it works for well intro but during the scenes he changes to Superman it doesn't seem to fit well..
In any of the episodes when he changes to Superman does he ever reveal the 'S' symbol?.I only ever see him run into a room or jump off camera.

I mean the incidental music. I love it, seasons 1 and 2, and some of 3-4
I don't think he does rip the shirt open, a shame but I never really noticed before though. The show had a charming simplicity to it.

The show does have a charming feel too it and it is enjoyable and good entertainment but if i saw these on regular basis as a child i would have higher regard for it but only seeing 1 or 2 episodes as child and then re-watching them now i don't find them to be that special.
I thought George Reeves never really looked liked Superman and he was a bit too chubby, some of it done to the ridiculous padding but he was a bloody good actor and made the part his own during the 50's.

The show had a charming simplicity to it. A semi shirt rip, in Panic in the Sky, when his back is turned to Jack Larson, George has his shirt open to reveal the S.
