This movie needs a re edit. BADLY. I decided to rewatch it last week and although I may have gotten a kick out of it when I was 5 or 6 theres so much in it thats corny even by a childs standards.
I think the BIGGEST mark against it is the portrayal of Lex Luthor. It seems like the worst parts of the movie all revolve around him in some ways. The voice directing isn't as sharp and it even affects the regulars like Daly, Delany, and Kaufman.
The music doesn't fit either. Something more "mature" could help shift the tone of the movie some. I did like what they did with the Fortress of Solitude's look and the Phantom Zone ideas.
I did like Lance Hendrickson as Brainiac, he's got a unique voice but he just wasn't directed properly.
A re edit is one of those things on my to do list one day along with a re edit of Superman II and Batman Forever. It'd be almost impossible to replace Powers Booths voice with Clancy Brown though...which would go a long way.

Personally, I don't think a re-edit will fix it.
You can't polish a turd. You just end up with poo on your hands.

I don't think you can make it great but you can make it better. Much the same way people have tried with Superman III and IV.
The big fight with Superman and Brainiac at the end isn't bad except for the stupid stuff with Luthor.
Take Highlander II for example. The theatrical release is some of the stupidest shit ever...but the Renegade cut went a long way to improving it. Still got problems but its not as bad as it was. I can see were further re edits could make that movie even better.

Well, if you can do what Jimborton did with SIV, then I will personally give you a cookie.
Perhaps Brainiac Attacks deserves another gander.

Not in its current form it doesn't. I was bitterly dissapointed on my first viewing because I think my expectations were so high for a lot of reasons.
Its not as terrible as the first time I saw it but its still got a lot of problems. BA may be the worst DC animated movie yet and looks particularly bad when compared to New Frontier, Crisis on Two Earths, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern.
Then again I was pretty disappointed with Public Enemies on first viewing too and I've warmed to that a bit.

Thats one thing that got me. When JLU ended it had really reached such a high creative peak that when Brainiac Attacks was released a few months later its flaws were even more magnified.
Brainiac Attacks was more like Static Shock in tone instead of Superman TAS. Nothing wrong with Static Shock but its a more simple show for a much younger audience.
Superman and Justice League were shows that could be enjoyed by any people of many ages and even sometimes seemed geared towards older fans while having plenty for kids to enjoy. Brainiac Attacks was almost exclusively targeting an audience of about 8 and under...and it wasn't even trying to be clever with its material.

I remember being very excited when this movie was announced and that Superman was finally getting his own solo animated movie (Batman had 3 or 4 already). Then I heard Luthor and Brainiac would not be Clancy Brown and Corey Burton, which baffles me to this day considering they got Tim Daly and Dana Delany back and Brown and Burton had JUST finished working on JLU. When reviews started to come out they were mixed at best, but what disappointed me most was that this apparently wasn't even in the DCAU continuity! What a waste! Why get back Daly and Delany and use the character designs from S:TAS only to give the film no connection to what had come before?
Being the completest I am I was all ready to buy it regardless, but was stopped by my best friend. He'd seen it first and warned me to avoid it, so I trusted his judgment and to this day have never seen "Brainiac Attacks." And since it's not really a part of the DCAU anyway, I feel no more obligation to buy it than I do any of the new standalone DC animated movies that have been coming out recently. Sorry "Wonder Woman" and "Green Lantern: First Flight," no interest here.

I shall never watch this again. Or Doomsday. Just awful.
I just bought Justice League season one on bluray. Here's hoping everything else comes out. It looks incredible. Watched the first three episodes with Val a while back on DVD and last night on bluray. I can't believe I didn't watch this series when it was on. I guess it was college era and I never found the time to devote to it. Feh. Fixed!

I didn't care for "Superman: Doomsday" too much either when it first came out, but seeing it again recently I liked it for what it was. I think part of what made it feel off was it's being TOO stylistically similar to the DCAU. It looks like it could have fit right in with S:TAS and JL/JLU, but with an entirely different cast and a separate continuity it finds itself out of place. It's the same issue I have with a lot of these new DC Animated movies; there's no pre-established connection to the characters. The Batman/Superman series being the exception with the casting of Conroy and Daly. A shame they didn't get Michael Ironside back as Darkseid in the new one though.

I really don't have a problem with the new movies being in their own continuity myself.
The DCAU continuity had been so explored from beginning to end and certain things done that there was no WAY they could do some of the stories they've done with the DC universe animated dvds. They really couldn't have done the death of Superman proper in the JLU/Superman/Batman/Batman Beyond continuity because JL had already covered parts of it separately in "Hereafter" and other episodes. Great episodes but they played fast and loose with the actual stories they were based on.
The entire Green Lantern issue was very confusing in the DCAU and First Flight just wouldn't have been possible in that continuity. Wonder Woman's origin was to tied into the Justice Leagues first adventure in the JL animated series to mesh with what the Wonder Woman dvd movie did, which was a more comic book accurate origin story for her. I really do think its the BEST Wonder Woman origin ever done. WB needs to take Green Lantern and Wonder Woman and learn how you do these kinds of stories for live action
Doomsday wasn't bad to me but it was one of the weakest movies they've done so far.
I didn't mind much that they changed the Death of Superman story from the comics because quite frankly the actual DEATH of Superman was a thin as fuck gimmick story anyway. The real meat of that whole 2 year saga was the "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen" arcs--basically the AFTERMATH of the Death of Superman.
The whole Lex Luthor II thing was complicated as heck to have to explain in a movie less than 90 minutes long. It also would have taken to much time to introduce all four Superman stand ins too so I like how they incorporated elements of The Cyborg, Eradicator, and Superboy all into one new evil Superman/Bizarro like character.
The problem was the whole story rolled by to fast without giving certain things time to breath. Everything was to truncated and the actual impact of Superman's death wasn't really allowed to settle in before he was resurrected.
I wasn't to crazy about Adam Baldwin as Superman or Anne Heche as Lois. Not bad but they didn't seem quite right for the parts. I liked Marsters as Luthor...though he seemed a little...erm...gay for Superman. Like some kind of homoerotic love/hate fixation.
The design work seemed a little lazy on the character models. Superman looked a little haggard in the face too. I did like what they did with the Fortress and the black Superman outfit. The new robot assistant had touches of Keelix and Eradicator that were pretty neat.
Like The Blur/Kirok I kind of liked it but was still somewhat disappointed with it. Its nowhere near the best work out of the DCU animated movie line. It was clear they were trying to get a handle on how to do these movies in this format and I think now they really are knocking them out of the park.

I've actually never seen this. No real desire to, either.
And Doomsday SUCKED. I hate everything about it. Lousy performances, thin script, weird character designs. And talk about a missed opportunity with that storyline! This deserved THREE 75 minute animated movies, instead we got one...one with all the best bits cut out of it entirely. I can't see myself ever watching this again unless I was really, really, really bored.
If there would have been another season of Superman: The Animated Series, the whole Death and Return could have been an entire season worth of awesomeness. And that's exactly what should have happened. Can you imagine, after 3 seasons of awesome Superman cartoons, where we have relationships with these particular incarnations of the characters, if they then devoted a whole season to this? Complete with all the necessary supporting characters? My God!

I think Justice League really outdid anything they could have done with Death of Superman with "Hereafter", the Cadmus, and the final Legion of Doom/Darkseid season.
STAS and JL nailed Superman and Batman's relationship better than anyone else ever has. Public Enemies made them almost GAY for each other at times...not that there's anything wrong with being gay.
