booshman's SII: RDC REDUX fanedit

tyler has been mentioning this for a while, and I noticed that booshman has finally released his new fanedit, so I think it deserves its own topic.

I think it's probably going to be one of the best SII fanedits around for a while. Some of the things he has done looks very interesting.

Here's the Fanedit info:

Over 50 new or digitally altered shots, A new ending, 2 restored deleted scenes, Thorne music cue's and LC audio used where possible, Removal of modern footage/ bad effects from DC, Extensive recolouring throughout, Soundtrack rebuilt in some sections.

Cuts removed/added/extended:
DC=Donner Cut, LC=Lester Cut, STM=Superman the Movie, DS=Deleted Scene

Black and white WB logo, New Reeve dedication (to match Unsworth dedication STM)
LC - space intro
DC - Zod trial and Phantom Zone (poorer effects shots of the PZ removed, explosion shot flipped back to correct way around)
STM - Lois dead/ SM turns back time (changed shots to show SM reversing his actions with XK-101 rocket, added extra “Forbidden” dialogue from STM theatrical cut)
DC - SM chases XK-101 and launches into space (new shot of SM throwing rocket added)
DC/LC - Villains released by XK-101 (DC poor star backdrops painted out, zoomed shot to remove planet)
STM/DC - Credits (Reeve receives top billing, Fan-editors credit added)
DC - Daily Planet intro (Lois goofy reaction cut, Lois jumping out of window cut, new newspaper close up added)
DC - Lex and Otis in prison (added “Life plus 25” LC audio)
LC - Moon sequence (trimmed Mission Control humour, Zod vs cosmonaut as in DC)
DC - Lex escapes from prison (added LC wave to Otis, trimmed bickering in balloon)
LC - Niagara rescue (trimmed for plot continuity, removed crowd reactions by rebuilding score and sound effects)
DC - Lex approaches Fortress.
DC - Lex enters Fortress (climbing with Eve cut)
DC/LC – Lex activates control panel (Jor-El de-coloured, Villains are displayed in education crystal viewer, crystal viewer added to wide shot for continuity, NO full body Jor-El )
LC - Lex heads South (re-worked dialogue so that the 3 sets of alpha waves are just appearing, and not like Lex has seen them before but only just connected them to the villains)
LC - Lois jumps into the river (“You're what I thought was SM” cut)
LC - Villains arrive (“a very strange surface” removed)
DC - Blank bullets (removed changing Reeve appearance, removed reference to DP jump)
LC - Cops encounter villains (“Holy skunk sweat” removed, Zod takes the gun of the cop a super speed (new effect added), end with cops reaction as in DC)
DC - Lovers fly North
LC - Non stands guard (75% audio completely rebuilt to remove Non's grunts)
LC - Bar confrontation (Added Motorhead's “Metropolis” to the jukebox, ends at “These humans are beginning to bore me”)
LC - SM shows Lois the crystal (removed Lois' “Especially around dinner time”)
LC - SM gets dinner
DC - Newsbeat/ Army encounter 1

This part almost sounds like a 'MANDATORY' requirement that the officail RDC should have before releasing it straight to dvd....


The idea of using the time travel w/the foreboding "Forbidden" dialogue brings back that old question:

Other thoughts on the list:

* Would Mank/Donner have addressed the time reversal issue or just ignored it? Would have LOVED Mank to have talk about that, his memory seemed pretty sharp at the time of the bts stuff...

* It's neat to have Reeve first.... but if going back in time & Donner stayed on, I think it would have stayed third, behind Brando & Hackman (as per their original contracts for two films back to back)
--- that's the main reason I wouldn't change the order on that portion.... But, I do get the reasoning, totally valid-

* No DP jump? *sigh*

* Curious how the decoloring was done for Jor-el, without it looking funky. Tip of the hat if done well!

((Aside: Always find that portion of the RDC bts where Thau says: [paraphrasing] "Oh, we had to distinguish when Jorel was a memory vs. really being there w/Superman for the audience to understand.". IDIOT! It was ALREADY in the script! When Jor-el appears the SECOND time to Reeve, then he physically becomes a full body image for the FIRST time when he transfers his power to Supes. That would have made it clear.*sigh*))

* Blank Bullets is always a nightmare, Selutron had an interesting/admirable attempt, but this seems like a doomed scene to REALLY fix in entirety w/o new shots and MAJOR rotoscoping.

* Zod taking the gun with superspeed sounds interesting.... better than the Lester idea- but the downside would be questioning WHY Zod would need to be in such a rush & not just be fearless in ripping it out of the deputy's hands.

* Thau's editing of Reeve's performances for depowering and repowering are a constant sore spot. Can't blame anyone for trying to readjust these in different ways!

* The idea of a shirt rip/fly to Metropolis is always fascinating to me, because it could work either way. The way it seemed scripted was more intriguing--- Clark seemed to possibly be in PAIN in the repowering = as he was supposed to fall to the ground & convulse with the power- as opposed to standing there, with his head jerking back and forth (embarrassing no matter how it's edited). Given how fast Donner had to shoot the Brando stuff & given how he's said openly that he would have liked Brando to come back for a reshoot, I think we can all assume that THIS part of the RDC isn't at all how it would have been in the final cut, had Donner stayed...

Still--- always love the fan cuts. Pity that there's no official way that a fan cut festival of SII cuts could ever be shown in a group setting....

I'm eager to watch this, but I really don't want to watch any Superman movies till Christmas - as I'm working on my own edit, and if I overload myself with too much stuff, I will get burnt out - I mean, I've gotta watch the RIC, tyler's edit, this booshman cut, further work from cam, my own edit and then I've gotta make room for sitting down and enjoying STM and SR finally.

Hard to enjoy the Superman movies and keeping the magic there when there's so much stuff to work on - which is part of the baggage with working on your own edits, I'm afraid.

Re-editing that Frankenstein nightmare Superman II to be more in line with what Donner intended is probably the #1 cause of burnout for fancutters.....

I respectfully disagree CAM, but only because I don't NEARLY as much work as you do lol. I can't remember when I did my 1st draft but my 2nd draft was sometime in October last year, and I finished my 3rd draft back in January of this year. Then did my 4th,5th, and 6th versions (small, quick fixes) and finished it around the end of March. I have been EAGER to get to work on this since May 31st when Boosh released the trailer for his updated cut. Now that it's 4 months later, I am just BREWING with passion to get to work on this again. However, since school is in session right now, I will do one of two things. Either I'll work on this slowly for the next 3 months, or I'll just wait until the semester is over and go full blown back into it.

You bring an interesting point....ruining the original experience of the films via personal fan cutting- but then again- the first experience of the 'real' Thau cut was so bad, almost anything else is an improvement and removing that experience from one's brain I think is what everyone wants. *sigh*
