I heard about this, do you think you will be able to get the tickets tomorrow? You can send me the email with the ticket info if you want. I just hope they don't turn round to me and say "these are not your tickets!"

Picked up the tickets, lady at the box office told me that there are about 60 going. She said it's a small cinema, I have never been to the Stand even though it's beside me.

Home sweet home!! Well the three of us went. Great meeting Paul and Ryan (Ral & Indo) finally! Just chatted a bit before the, curtains went, comic book introduction and then the movie stops!! We ended up changing to a different screen where they'd no heat on but was a little bigger so was much better!
Movie was the old print! Very dirty at the begining and end but about 80% of it was excellent! Sound was dodgy but still didn't matter I finally got to see STM on the big(ish) screen!!
There were a few small bits and pieces and by that I mean single frames. Probably because they were very dirty or something. The cop didn't say "So that's how he does it" and a few only individual lines were also missing but nothing serious. All in all about 20 seconds!!
Got a photo of the three of us so will upload that tomorrow! I was too busy singing in the car and missed my exit and lost 30 mins getting back on the road! Was raging!!
Ryan and Paul are top fellas! Great to meet them and i'm sure I will again in the future!

What a great night. I was a little nervous before hand, but that proved to be completely unfounded. Ryan and Conor were two of the nicest guys you could meet. I myself had a bit of time to kill earlier in the day and got to the cinema about 7.10pm (show started at 8pm). I was the first person to arrive in the cinema and since it was quite small I ended up talking and having a cup of tea with to what turned out to be the projectionist. We started talking about the print. Some of you guys with projection experience can maybe correct me incase I picked him up wrong but he said he had a lot of work (cutting and pasting) to do on the print to get it ready for the screening. It had been worked on alot in the past. He also said it was one of the longest reels they had run there. If it had of been any longer it would have required an intermission with 2 reels. Noticing I had an interest in this sort of thing he offered to show me the projection room. I lept at the chance. The reel was massive especially when he compared it to other movies they had there. I lifted the reel to see the weight of it and had a quick feel of the film (sad I know!). I joked "You would have to be Superman to lift that thing!" I wish i could of gotten photos of the reel but my phone doesn't have a flash so the photos came out black (the room was quite dark). As Conor said, after a hickup in the small room we went into the big room. It really worked out for the best...alot more immersive. I was really impressed with the colour of the print and as already stated the print was generally very good. I have the blu-ray and a big telly...but there are just somethings you just need to see on the big screen. During the credits at the start, for a brief moment felt I was 5 years old again watching Superman 2 in my old local cinema...and that's what it's all about.

Great night and was great to meet Paul and Conor. Sound guys. Of course I misjudged the distance from my house to the cinema and had to sprint part of the journey.
As the guys have mentioned we had to move screens but this turned out to be a blessing - the bigger screen was a better experience. The movie was in surprisingly good condition for a 1978 print, when the film started it even had the old BBFC rating system (A as opposed to PG). I got to say they must have turned off the heating near the end of the movie I was freezing! I was glad of the lift home from Conor, it was one cold night. The cinema itself is very quent, clean and nostalgic, none of the commercialised features of the modern cinema. I believe it may be the oldest independent cinema in Northern Ireland. It was a great night and it was good to finally meet up with Paul and Conor.

Wow, they used a 1978 print!?
Yeah, that's a lot of work. There's a lot of splicing that needs to be done. The older the print, the more fragile it is. I'm really surprised it's help up over 30 years. Most prints start to fall part after 10 years or so.
Glad you's guys had fun!

"On the whole, I mean meeting Conor and Ryan - Gosh on the whole I'd say it's been swell."
Conor mentioned lost frames. One that stood out for me was the destruction of Krypton. The long shot of the planet and sun intact just before the explosion was missing...so it just went from people falling and screaming to "BANG", and I thought it worked quite well.
Btw, for those with an interest The Rocketeer is showing next Monday and the print is apparently in great condition.

I noticed a lot more of actor Larry Lamb (Archie from Eastenders, miner in Superman III) in the Daily Planet sequences. He can be seen entering the Planet after Clark gets the door closed on him by Lois when she goes to the ladies. We see him again when Perry talks to the reporters in his office ("..since God spoke to Moses") , also he is wearing a dicky bow and seen moving under the TV set during the Xk101 news footage.

A 35mm print of Superman The Movie,excellent.
How many reels was it,probs 6? being just over 2 hours,20mins a reel. Most of the dirt will have been at the start and end of reels, which are the parts that get handled the most during splicing together.
Amazing that there is still a print for this banging around, excellent.
Glad you enjoyed it folks,good.

How many reels was it,probs 6? Just the 1 reel as far as I could tell. It was about 3ft in diameter.

Yea,sounds about right for a six-reeler. When prints are delivered they come flat packed and each reel is spliced together to make up an entire film. To mark each reel the projectionist high lights the edge of the film with a paint pen/marker.
The prints are really heavy and should be moved by two people.
Thanks to Fight Club people are well aware of cigarette burns that indicate the end of one reel and the start of another. That's where the build up of dirt occurs.
The film is fed from one platter, through a series of rollers through the projector head and then the film gathers around a metal ring on another platter.
This wont be for much long though as cinema chains are going digital over the next 2 years making the role of the projectionist redundant.

Yep my job is on the line late next year as a projectionist. Everything going digital at the Cambridge Cineworld in 2012. Hope to move on next year anyway.

yeah its shame a lot of people are gonna loose jobs but we have to move with the times. Being a projectionist or how Cineworld like to call it a ' Technician' is great fun but its a shame it doesn't pay better.
