Best ever? I think so. Maybe it's because I grew up with his drawings associated with the Kenner Super Powers line. Here's a great look at his work: michelfiffe.com/columns/jose_luis_garcia_lopez/index.htmlThis image specifically... Look at all the humanity he can portray in the quieter moments... such a subtle aspect of Superman that many artists fail to capture (or even recognize):

I'm a Swan/Murphy Anderson guy myself, but love Garcia-Lopez. He did, I believe, ALL of the model sheets for ALL of the DC merchandising in the 80s and much of the 90s. His people look like PEOPLE (much like Swan), and I always liked his graceful, athletic take on Superman.

Yes! Definitely my favorite or in my top 5. Like the older stuff, love any newer stuff. He is truly underrated. I feel the same way about him or more so about Jim aparo and his work on Batman.

i dont follow comics since the 90s. and i dont know if it is nostalgia and i dont care but i prefer 100% this elegant style than what i see in comics here and there. a lot of stuff just too pasteurised..

One of the best but sadly underrated artist out there. Superb draftsmanship. He can cram so many figures onto a panel, each character with their own distinct styles, lifelike & dynamic, where other artists would've just used close-ups. If you take time to notice, he has a way of drawing hands that is subtle & versatile. Others 'short-cut' it with just punches or the 'salute' palm
His draws figures in proportion, each has its distinct style, character & poses (Alan Davis reminds me of this too). Never runs out of style like, say ... Jurgens or Gil Kane .... whom I've seen recycle poses so their characters don't stand out from each other. Jurgens ... IMHO .... drew too many hands as punches. Supes' poses sometimes look robotic or 'posey'. Last thing we want is looking like purposely posing for something. Subtlety is the key & Garcia-Lopez nails it everytime.
Considering the above, I dare say he's better than Jim Lee. Too bad not many appreciates his art. Many instead, clamor for Jim's style which I think can at times be too chunky, stylized & forgo proportion & draftsmanship. Even Jim's art starting to appear on DC merchandise
I really hope there's more graphic novel projects for Lopez instead of just seeing his art on merchandise

Garcia-Lopez BURIES Jim Lee. There's not even a comparison there.

Jesus, no. What? Lee's Superman isn't even NEAR Garcia-Lopez's'z's.
It's the version I grew up with, too, so that probably does make all the difference in the world, but I feel his Superman is the definitive Superman. I prefer Jurgens but overall, yeah. Garcia-Lopez for the win.
And that's a goddamn Hollywood Squares reference, not a Charlie Sheen one. He doesn't OWN the fucking term win.

Garcia-Lopez BURIES Jim Lee. There's not even a comparison there. Have to agree with this. Garcia-Lopez' Superman is probably my fave too. His Superman is very expressive, dynamic and majestic. www.theartistschoice.com/glopezcommercialsuperman1.htmI also really like Byrne's Superman, and the Superman from 'Exile.'

How can those great images be placed on an awful webpage that screams 1990s? Perhaps a deliberate retro feel?

My all time favorite artist. It's a shame that everyone has seen his merchandising art but few actually know his name. Check out his official fan page on facebook: www.facebook.com/JoseLuisGarciaLopezFansIt's constantly being updated with classic and new images.

That drawing looks just like Reeve. The likeness is really good.

That's one of the reasons why I always gravitated toward Garcia-Lopez's art. His Superman was so reminiscent of Reeve. Plus, he drew superheroes who were always smiling and wearing their classic costumes.

Plus, he drew superheroes who were always smiling and wearing their classic costumes. That's one of my turn-offs with Alex Ross. Everyone is drawn really well, but everyone looks piiiiiiiissed. And chubby. And old.

And chubby. And old. Ross always says he likes his superheros to look more rugged and mature. You can definitely tell he favors Shusters original Superman look. He says one of the issues he always had with Reeve was that he was too much of a "pretty boy" Then he said Reeve looked like a macho he man type compared to Routh. But then this is all coming from the guy who I think did a painting of Welling as Superman and/or said Welling should BE Superman in a new movie. The check somebody wrote him must have been pretty fucking epic.
