Like I've mentioned many times before, there are many great episodes in Smallville. You just have to look through all the crap to find them.

I do remember listening to the writer/director of the "JLA" episode, and when he mentioned a lot of the clever bits that got axed by DC (i.e.- in the JLA episode, when the group tries to come up with a name for them, one person comes up with "Teen Titans" and Chloe came up with "Superfriends" until everyone gives her a disgusted look from the name....which I loved, but apparently DC said no to this scene among other ideas)-- I got a sense that Smallville is something that may or may not be handcuffed by different entities from the start, being a corporate product.
If that's really the case, then it's hard to know how much credit/blame goes to Gough and Millar for a show that keeps going in (dull) creative circles after so many seasons.
I thought in general that this was a series that REALLY could have delved deep into the shaping of Clark/Supes as a character--- and it's hard to know if the mediocrity was a result of Gough/Millar or of DC comics/WB restrictions.
Still... It has some great moments now and then that (to me) justify its existence. (And the tributes to the Donner movie at times makes it hard to totally hate).
