I read Year One and The Long Halloween a couple of days ago. Loved them both. I really liked The Long Halloween...I didn't think the number of costume villains were that excessive and unnecessary. Though, I was a little disappointed with Year One....I felt there should've been more, but it was exciting.
I'm about to read Dark Victory next.

i enjoyed a lot of these , but i am WAAAAY behind on comics .
i DO recommend " son of demon " , which actually sets up batman's role in the sequel to " kingdom come " which was titled " the kingdom " . if you havent read these i wont spoil it , but a signifigant element in " son of demon " becomes relevant to " the kingdom " .
( actually to be technical , " the kingdom " was a 2-part miniseries with several one-shot tie-ins and the batman tangent was inone of the oneshots )

I loved Dark Victory. I just love the whole Batman solving murders like a detective story.
I also read The Dark Knight Returns. I'll be honest...I was very reluctant to read it because I browsed through some pages to look at the art and get an idea of what I'm dealing with. At first, I wasn't impressed at all. I thought the art looked silly at a lot of parts. Not sure what I was smoking that day, but when I pulled through and began reading, I was blown away.
Such an exciting story and immediately, I said to myself that this comic must've been really ballsy to release back in the mid-80s. But I loved the new takes on characters and never in my life did I want Superman to go down at the end. Excellent read.

Don't expect much from The Dark Knight Strikes Back.

Val said to avoid like it was ebola. I'll take his word for it. I want to read Arkham Asylum, though. The art looks fantastic there and I hear the Joker is totally fucked up in it.

Arkham Asylum is...disturbing. Don't go in expecting a slam-bang Batman story. It's great, but it's more like a horror movie than a Batman comic.
There is no reason whatsoever to read The Dark Knight Strikes again. It dilutes the original like a Star Wars prequel, or like Godfather 3...
...except it's WORSE. Because the SW Prequels and GF3 were at least SINCERE (even though they stink). Dark Knight Strikes Again is not only a giant middle finger to superheroes, it's a giant middle finger to YOU THE CONSUMER who buys it. I distinctly got the impression that Frank Miller was making fun of me when I read it, and for that, he may kiss my ass.
Also, avoid his and Jim Lee's "All Star Batman & Robin".

Well, with the way you're describing Dark Knight Strikes Again, you're engaging my curiosity more than repelling it. ;D
Based on the art for Arkham, I didn't think it was going to be a regular Batman story in the slightest. It looks like something I'd expect in a Silent Hill game.

Maybe DO read it just to see how the mighty can fall, HARD, and yet still act like God's gift.
Man, some comic book writers are really fucking nutbar, it seems like. Not bathe in blood and wash hair with shit nutbar, but nutbar.

#1: Batman- Year One Miller and Mazzucelli should have never separated. Miller's gone downhill since then.
#2: The Killing Joke The Ultimate Joker story...amazing that "The Dark Knight" movie rivals it!
#3: The Dark Knight Returns Way ahead of its time, and still is relevant. If you talk about great endings, this is the way for Bats to go out.
(RUNNER UP: #4: Hush Great epic journey, seeming to be about Jason Todd's death, but really about Batman's relationship with Catwoman, and how/why Batman could never have a relationship with anyone.)
An aside: I totally agree with Valentine Smith: Avoid the Dark Knight Returns' sequel like the plague.
That, and "Batman and Robin" by Miller are gigantic disappointments. In one interview, Miller once said that he enjoyed working with editors who would stop him if he went too far- but that was a long time ago, and I suspect that once Miller got his own independence and became a 'superstar' of comics, editors don't dare get in his way, even when his work becomes more indulgent rather than ground-breaking....which is definitely what DKR 2 and B&R feel like.

Ok, I read Arkham...holy shit, was that creepy. It was perfectly described as a nightmare while on a LSD trip. But I love the new twists on the villains...I really felt the hopeless and insane nature out of them. The Joker as this unreasonable force, Two-Face using Tarrot cards to make decisions, or even the Mad Hatter as a pedophile. Disturbing stuff.
