I watched it yesterady with my 5-year-old. It was the first time I had seen it in many years.
It was pretty much as crap as I remembered. Poor story, OTT acting etc.
But it still had a kind of magical feel to it. It reminded me a lot of Explorers - probably because of all the night-time flying scenes and the Jerry Goldsmith score.
Helen Slater was really good at the flying stuff. The part where she first discovers she can fly is incredibly graceful.
Also loved the bright costume.
In terms of brightness, fun and the kind of magic that a superhero film should be, Supergirl is actually better than Superman Returns.

I don't think its "better" than SR, but that flying ballet is very good.
Reeve was wise not to get involved. One of his better moves

Going by that logic, Supergirl is actually better than 'The Dark Knight', 'Spiderman', 'Xmen', too. Better inform Rotten Tomatoes.

I enjoyed Supergirl a lot back in the day.
Peter O'Toole is better here than anyone in SR. And for that matter, Faye Dunaway chews a lot of scenery but she's got more energy than anyone in SR.

Faye Dunaway could have been a stronger Lois Lane when she was younger, certainly, than Bosworth and definitely more energy than Frank Langella.
Peter O'Toole is fun- but he's like a Jack Nicholson or a Christopher Walken-- they do a certain thing on camera, and it's cool, but they're not exactly chameleons on film. I certainly wouldn't replace a young Peter O'Toole in his prime for Routh as Superman.

I guess if we throw in fantasy films, how does it stack up to the original Star Wars trilogy and Lord of the Rings?

Dunaway is pretty awful in it. But Slater is lovely, the music is terrific, and I really enjoyed the production design for Argo City.

I think Dunaway's awfulness was mostly influenced by the producers looking at how Luthor was done for comic relief in STM and thought that campy villains were the way to go.
Nobody feels that Slater was wrong for the role (that I know of), the music is great, I thought the production design for Argo City was interesting- though I was expecting something closer to the FOS with the ice crystal palaces again. (Especially if they were trying to make direct ties to the Reeve Superman films)

If this was your attempt at comedy, you'd be out of a job indefinitely, imo.

I see Supergirl approximately every 2 or 3 days as my 5 year old son, like your ATP, likes to watch it. However, I've never watched it all the way through. It bores me senseless. Even the flying scenes look horrendous, the 'ballet' included, sorry

I just saw her today, she swooped in coffee and let me play with her S. Then she had to go, something about an asteroid heading this way.

At best, the Slater Supergirl flying scenes can be a nice music video. There are other small bits and pieces to enjoy, (like the Peter O'Toole stuff is fun) but it's like looking for pearls in a pile of dung.

I guess if we throw in fantasy films, how does it stack up to the original Star Wars trilogy and Lord of the Rings? Supergirl stands up terrific to the above mentioned films. To those in the know, Supergirl was an amazing attempt to experiment with the male gaze and how it is steered in the motion picture industry, versus how audiences perceive it. You see, Ripley and Sarah Conner weren't as well know, at least Ripley wasn't the norm for female fighters. With Supergirl it's obvious that Ilya and Alexander, and Jeannot wanted to give us something with more substance than Charlie's Angels. Supergirl may not be a trend-setting, trail blazing slice of cinema, but it has a plethora of merits, it's cast, it's European style, it's totally opposite approach to the Superhero film. It's good to see more people showing appreciation and soon it will have accolades and rewards it so richly deserves!!! ;D

The music really really stands out for me, too. Especially the love theme... Beautiful, emotive piece of work... I often find myself humming it.
The main theme is very interesting to listen to as well... since Goldsmith was one of the forerunners for scoring STM, I think it's safe to assume that this is very possibly the way it would have sounded had he been given the job. But I'm glad they went with Williams... That theme is just untouchable.

Additional: The theme sounds SO much better without that weird electronic whooshing horn sound...

I have always liked Jeannot Szwarc's movies - particularly Somewhere in Time. He's very interesting to listen to in commentaries and interviews too.
If the retarded script and plot for Supergirl weren't so cheesy and crap, he probably could have made this into something much more successful.

I'm the opposite, I think Szwarc is a terrible director. Someone else would have made SiT and SG far better IMO

Well,I started watching it the other day. I was enjoying seeing it again, the stuff on her home,Argo City. Peter O'Toole was pretty good. I like the opening scenes, sure. Very, very nice music...
Her flying scenes were very graceful, quite balletic which I enjoyed.
I like the idea of her having dark hair as a disguise, that's a good move I thought.
I turned it off once it began to get really rubbish, the plot line of falling in love with the landscape gardener, come on!! The villains' hideout was really poor,an abandoned fair ground, really? Was that they best they could do??
The tractor devastating the city street, that was bollocks too.
Upon resuming watching it tonight I found myself thoroughly occupied by it. Once that castle/fortress part began. SG in the phantom zone, all that was good along with Zoltan there too
Entertaining enough I guess.

Jesus...I don't think I've sat through this in twenty years. Might be worth a look one of these days. Loved it when I saw it in theaters. Then again, I was like, 7.

There's two things that stand out for me in Supergirl and they're just behind the S on her suit!
But seriously, I quite like the movie, ever since I saw it in the cinema age 6. Most of it is crap, but perhaps not as crap as Superman 4.
I met Jeannot Szwarc last year - spotted him at a special screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey, accompanied by a live orchestra & choir. He was with his son and I went up to him to say how much I loved Somewhere in Time, as well as Supergirl and he walked away with a big smile as his son said, "See, people do recognise you."
