Pryor dominates, Otis wasn't even a major character, so it has to be Pryor.
Can't say either of them "sucked hard" though, that's an exaggeration. Both terrific actors and very watchable. They were obviously given subpar material to work with - which as a fan of SR, Star must know what that's all about ;D

^I was obviously talking about the characters not the actors..
Yes, characters like Otis and Gus just don't belong in a quality Superman movie; of course SIII is not a quality Superman movie. Some parts about it are interesting and well done, but as a whole it doesn't work AT ALL. It wasn't a real S movie like STM, SII and SR. Even SIV tries better in that regard but fails in all accounts.

Parts of Superman III work very well. When scenes were serious, it was pretty good. The junkyard fight is classic

That was like...Batman & Robin bad.

Oh yeah, that was probably the nadir of the Salkind films

It's not even that the performances or bad or that the characters are wholly inappropriate. There is some debate about whether Otis is overused in STM, and Pryor gets FAAAAAAAR too much screen-time in SIII.

A little more screen time and you easily could have called Superman III "Gus Gorman: The Movie." He gets way to much time especially considering he's not even the true villain of the film.
His appearances clock in longer than the regulars and probably Annette O'Toole. A friend of mine simply could not take Superman III seriously in any way because of Richard Pryor. In a Superman movie. He even preferred Superman IV despite the terrible special effects.

(sigh)
I really should just get over myself and watch SIII and SIV again. I didn't even watch them when the 06 DVDs came out. I've never even seen the deleted footage from SIV.

You should watch III Val. Its kind of schizo changing tones the way it does but there are some good moments. Its not boring like I used to think so. Reeve shines in it
If you have the s/track to IV then don't bother with the film. Deleted scenes: urgh, once you see them you can never unsee them. You'll understand why they were cut and why we should have realised that test audience might have a had a point about wanting stuff cut

This is just my opinion but I'd say watch both. Just do what I do and have your finger ever vigilant over the fast forward button on your remote. Been years since I've watched III or IV all the way through. I just skip to the less horrible parts. Reeve is ALWAYS good even when the movie around him is garbage. When its just down to pure acting both movies can be entertaining and engaging like Clark and Lana's talk during the picknick scene or Clarks reaction and looking out the window of the Planet after the "Superman says Drop Dead To Kid" headline comes up. Love that scene. I even enjoy Laras voice over and Superman's flight north. Susannah York is always underrated as Lara. It just goes to crap when he actually GETS to the Fortress with bad effects and hammy acting from some of those elders. heck I even like the double date because Reeve is so good in it.
