I say no. I want all three movies, if there are three, to work on their own. To not need anything else but itself to work. Does EVERYTHING have to be a trilogy nowadays? Everything has to be connected? Bah! here here!

Make each one a standalone adventure. Like the James Bond movies.

I say standalone would work best, but maybe with seeds planted that can be followed up on or not. Though a kickass trilogy with an endgame ala nolan's batman would be pretty amazing as well.

I say keep it finite. That way the story can be told in a way that allows them to explore real character and plot arcs across the films. It also frees you to do things that you can't if each film is forced to end in a way that sets things up for the next instalment.
Alternatively, you have to take the James Bond approach and craft discreet films which follow a formula. I'm not sure I can think of any other franchise (outside horror) which has been successful at this approach beyond a third / fourth or fifth instalment as it quickly goes stale.
I'm really looking forward to TDKR since this is probably the first time we've seen a superhero given an ending . . . whatever that may be! (I don't include X-Men 3 as they have made clear overtures that there were openings to a fourth film).

I think the biggest shame is that there's no set series of novels that studios and producers would feel more of a need to adhere to creatively. Other genre movie series that have been successful (Harry Potter series and the loathed by guys but box-office successful "Twilight" series) had to stick to (mostly) the books they were based on. With comics, and its wide span of writers and creative directions, studios and filmmakers (good and bad) feel more creative freedom with both the characters and the storylines in adapting them.....let alone what happens in sequels. So, ultimately, the only real consistent thing that audiences could hang onto character-wise in sequels is the actor playing them- since it's not a case where one filmmaker owns and protects those rights with a heavy hand (Like Lucas and his Indy or Star Wars movies). ((*Also, look again at how the studio kept fighting Sam Raimi who made gobs of money for Sony but since Raimi didn't own Spiderman had to always appease studio decisions)) For Xmen 3, if "The Dark Phoenix Saga" were a best-selling novel instead of best-selling comic, it's probably less likely that the studio (and filmmakers) would have felt like they had such free artistic license to do whatever they heck they wanted to, if they wanted the series to continue. (Maybe) If MOS gets a sequel, unless they actually have a 'series runner' that knows how to make/choose solid stories with the characters---- it's easy to see the audience get tired of the movies if it's all action and nothing else....particularly if each one demands more than $380 million worldwide not to disappoint.

Trilogy? Never even got a true sequel. Sadly true!!! We sort of got a trilogy but it was nothing like they probably planned. And boy oh boy did it cause all kinds of damage to their DC brand just to get that.

We sort of got a trilogy but it was nothing like they probably planned. And boy oh boy did it cause all kinds of damage to their DC brand just to get that. In some ways, it could be easy to place the blame on Nolan, for not being more hands on as a producer for MOS to keep the quality control --- but in seeing TDKR- Nolan's not a perfect guide for all things superhero, it seems, as well. But.... yeah, nobody seems/seemed happy with how it all played out. I'm not even sure Marvel feels happy over it- when Feige was asked, he said it's not good for anybody when superhero films fail, even from another company.
