In looking back at this point, having the Paris sequence be the cause for the villains release does help the story feel like it's moving forward, versus having the rocket from the first one release them....if Paris is going to be included. Aside from that, I'm glad most folks try to trim the Paris opener--- if Superman was fast enough to spin the entire planet around to reverse time, you'd think he'd be able to get to Paris from Metropolis a LITTLE faster...

Amen to that, CAM. Yes Hursty, my version retains the Paris sequence, but with a complete overhaul. You can see all 3 parts of it on youtube. All my Superman edits are there under onekingprods.
As you'll see, I decided to just go with the elavator freeing the villains. Part of it is nostalgia, and the other part of it is that, as CAM observed, given the way STM ultimately turned out, I'm content to leave that as is. Plus, what Lester shot appears a bit more spectacular than the missile footage provided in RDC. I know some very talented editors have made much of it, but I'm not one of them.
Finally, I really enjoy the pace and tension I gave the Paris sequence, and the release of the villains is what really brings it to a climax. I plan to do it exactly the same way for my HD cut.

It's a little odd that Supes doesn't feel super-rage at the genocide of his home planet or the heart attack he helped cause for his adopted father, but for a co-worker who he has only worked with for a day. (Even though she invited him to look at her underwear during an interview) But then again, he was pretty isolated in the north after his 18th birthday for YEARS.....
