Maybe this was discussed in depth years ago, but I wasn't there for anyone's perspective... However....
Is Lois' little poem necessary for STM? I mean, I cringe everytime it shows up. Could there have been another way to convey Lois' romantic/childlike attraction to Superman?

I dunno, as much as it has been parodied, I cant picture the movie without it.
I like it & would miss it terribly were it gone.
I think it does just what it sets out to do. Underline Lois' magical childlike crush on Big Blue.

It's lame, but needs to stay because it's always been there.

I guess it's just a dated idea to suddenly express in prose how much a person affects you and makes you feel like a child.

Meh. I don't hate it, but I don't love it.
I love the actual score, though. Johnny Williams at his best!

if you were a chick, and superman took you flying around the city for a bit of foreplay, you'd probably be thinking some silly shit too.
don't think it would ruin the movie if it wasn't there, not by any stretch of the imagination, but i like it.

I like it because it fits with the sweet, innocent tone of the romance Donner presented, as opposed to the slightly cruder "I've done Superman" allusion in SR.
I don't like it because as a storyteller, it's the whole "show me, don't tell me" approach. The bit with the dinner in the Fortress (S2) shows me more than a soliloquy tells me.

I think it might have been better to just let the facial expressions and the score do the talking. I think that conveyed the moment better than Lois's poem.

I just like the scenic flying, if I'm perfectly honest.

Well... there are quite a few scenes that boldly jump into territory that could be considered corny*--- but its sincerity and commitment make you go with it, and is part of the charm of STM, imo- because it has no embarrassment (unlike Lester's take on the series which tries to make fun of it, as much as he could) about its sentimentality.
(*i.e.- Superman's unnecessary speech to the warden at the end, Superman's line of "I'm here for truth, justice, and the American way" to Lois before she's more than a bit cynical about him saying it, until she realizes that he's not being sarcastic or dishonest aobut the sentiment.)
So....yeah, the 'song' stays, imo. I'm not in love with it (I almost cringed the first time I saw it, but since she doesn't sing it, I grew to like it. If she sang it....as originally intended, I might have had a more negative reaction to it.) It fits the tone of STM imo, which is heart on its sleeve and the guts to keep it there.

Well, during our group viewing, a couple took that scene as a chance for a bathroom break. ;D ;D ;D

Not me.
I pissed during the "Lex knows too much about space, time, & Kryptonite" scene. Its like the writers of Smallville wrote that dialog.

Seriously, I said this in the chat but there is NO WAY for Luthor to figure all that stuff out. I don't care if he's the greatest criminal mind of our time, it's impossible. Surely there could have been a better way for him to discover Superman's weakness.

Not a fan of the scene. But, it's my least favorite scene in my FAVORITE FRIGGIN' MOVIE, so that means it's still awesome. However, I am guilty of bathroom breaking for it,
NOT for the interview, or the initial takeoff. Just the "coffeehouse open mic nite spoken word" part.
