It doesn't matter how many people have heard of it. It's a matter of how many will pay for it. Numbers pulled from Amazon: Blade Runner 3-disc Blu-ray:Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #1,385 in Movies & TV #21 in Movies & TV > Blu-ray > Science Fiction #48 in Movies & TV > Blu-ray > Mystery & Thrillers #81 in Movies & TV > Blu-ray > Action & Adventure Dune Blu-ray:Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #4,699 in Movies & TV #45 in Movies & TV > Blu-ray > Fantasy #89 in Movies & TV > Blu-ray > Science Fiction
Superman Anthology Blu-ray:Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #5,687 in Movies & TV Superman/S2DC/SR combo Blu-ray:Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #10,596 in Movies & TV Superman (movie only) Blu-ray:Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #24,657 in Movies & TV Yes, there are more people buying Dune than Superman. David Lynch has a HUGE following, he is one of those people that can live comfortably for the rest of his life selling overpriced crap off his website. Oddly enough, alot of people bought the dvd of Dune because it had the TV version as a bonus, the version he disowned.

I have no idea. I haven't asked him about it. Hopefully he will spill it. Personally, I don't care about it. I just prefer the movies as they are, warts and all. Hey Gandy I thought after meeting Selutron and seeing his proposed ending that you were on board with his vision. Do I take it that you have changed your mind or do you just think it's very unlikely to ever surface? I loved his idea, but since Tom Mankiewicz's passing I lost interest. I don't think anyone should touch it without the author's full blessing. It just doesn't seem right to me, you know? The movie belongs to Tom, Dick and the Salkinds, they made it, they have the right to do whatever they want with it. Heck, if Donner and Salkind wanted to do it, then fine with me. I can't see that happening, though. This is what we've got, I can live with it. Ten years ago it was a dream to see this stuff, I'm just glad we got to see the footage.

Since this project isn't ever going to be completed, what was his proposed ending? Or is that confidentiality agreement still in effect?

The work he put in was impressive. As Gandy says, I'm also happy with what we have.
In all honesty...I'm curious to see what he had planned, but I don't want to have a "be all end all" edit dictated to me by a fan. It would have had no validity to me.

Some guy came around the board a long time ago with his cuts of Superman II and IV, calling them "definitive." That didn't turn out too well. For one thing, he thought he could make Superman IV better by cutting out another 20 minutes. ;D

Yeah I recently revisited the Donner cut and thought it held up better than I remembered. That said I'm still in favor of a re-cut simply because I think it could have been done so much better. On a side note I just watched the documentary 'the People v George Lucas' and I love the line that "a film is a product of it's time".

Agreed.... at the very least, I thought, 'be at LEAST as good as the IRC'. I recently saw the extended 'Superman talks with Jor-el' scene on Capewonder.com- and saw the few seconds' difference between that and Thau's trimming.... and, maybe it's just me, but DAMN- even on one scene, Thau decided to cut out a transitional few seconds, and it hurts THAT scene. I can only imagine how cutting out beats and bits here and there undermined the Donner footage.... let alone the giant removals of Lester footage (some I was fine with, others not) and the incredibly screwed up music editing that just about everyone comments on. I think I didn't mind so much that the RDC was a disappointment- Donner obviously didn't shoot enough to be able to change the story back around to his original conception...so a certain amount of disappointment was (for lack of a better word) NECESSARY/inevitable .. but- with fan cuts showing what could have been done with no access to the raw footage.... just how UNNECESSARILY bad a lot of the movie was--- due to sheer overcutting and bad decisions in fixing it up. Thau made Lucas' re-editing and re-touching of his original Star Wars films look like a work of art by comparison. If only SOMEONE (other than Thau) would recut this..... thus, my cry again for the IRC to be released on dvd. (International Release Cut, right?) I have a hunch that the IRC has more of Baird's editing untouched than the RDC does, as Baird was cutting just as the footage came in. With the short window of time for SII- I assume that most of his stuff wasn't changed a whole lot for the IRC. Anyhow..... with Amazing Spiderman NOT opening the door for a recut of Spiderman 3, got a bad vibe about anything else new coming around the pike for SII. ((Similarly, no recut for Batman Forever that Schumacher said he wanted, despite TDK and TDKR making bank))

Well, that after that interview you did with Selutron -- he got really carried away after that and told the other kids that Selutron's even coming to visit him for his birthday next Wednesday. Okay, it was wrong. But when Wednesday comes...and Selutron doesn't... Anyway, can you help? Try to do it please.

I always thought Selutron was someone from the Superman Cinema's board, maybe not this one but one of the boards from the past.

David Lynch came to a local bookstore years ago for a talk and sign books- I was giantly surprised just how humble and EXTREMELY easygoing the guy was, for an Academy Award nominated director and cult figure. He took his time talking to each and every person who waited in line, and genuinely seemed at ease and interested in talking with everyone who showed up at the bookstore. As far as the dvd- tv version--- I bought it- and, absolutely it was cool to see the extra Lynch footage in widescreen and dvd quality. From interviews (and from what I recall about his talk at the bookstore)--- he didn't feel like he was treated badly, but regretted all the compromises he felt he made with the film adaptation--- and it wasn't restricted to the tv version of it. (Although he did take his name off of it and not the theatrical. Funny, I don't recall anyone asking him why he chose to keep his name on that one.) I think seeing that it was possible for a tv version to make it to dvd (even disowned by the director) made it feel more possible for almost anything to get to an official dvd. After all, with the Dune tv cut, we're not talking about a bootleg copy, either, so.....

I'm pretty sure this was speculated on before in the thread.... even with the ability to do some great rotoscope work and sound mixing.... how many 'new' endings could there have been, really? #1: Lois remembers, no memory kiss, and is left at the balcony #2: Turning back time--- but with (as Pierre Spengler hinted at) Superman agonizing first over seeing many portions of the world destroyed (ie all the major monuments & the Mank draft had the Kremlin and Tokyo in flames) --- so much so, that it's the driving factor for time reversal. (*Not exactly 'new', but would be somewhat different than the rather indifferent Supes who turned back time in the RDC) If Mank and Donner couldn't come up with something new, it's hard to imagine anyone else could....but....

After all, with the Dune tv cut, we're not talking about a bootleg copy, either, so..... The reason behind the Dune director's credit is, Lynch originally turned in a 3hr cut of the film (Which Dune author Frank Herbert saw and evidently really liked). The producers convinced Lynch that a 3hr+ film would not make any money at the box office and he agreed to cut it down (probably because Dino had agreed to fund whatever lower budgeted project Lynch wanted to do next, Blue Velvet.) The producers later decided to take a great deal of the footage and add it back into the film, along with reusing effects shots and prologue paintings. This was never Lynchs vision and considered it a different film and asked for his name to be removed. It wasn't spiteful and he understood it was a for hire job, and seeing how Dino was funding his next project he didn't make a big deal out of it. It would be nice to see his original cut of the film though, that would be very interesting to watch!

Which will come sooner?
Selutron's S2, or an apology for the bullying in 2013?
