Reeve, Routh and Welling are baritones. They have the same range, it's just their timbre that sets them apart. I think Welling speaks half a step higher than Reeve and Routh, but it's pretty much the same.

Apart from his average physicality in the role, can you say anything bad about Routh? But you can't always blame Welling for the material he's given to work with. For me, not much. I liked Routh so much because he made me forget about Smallville for 2 1/2 hours (even if he wasn't given much in terms of playtime with dialogue). The show's writing is the stuff of nightmares (and not intentional ones ala' Wes Craven). Illogicalities and piss-poor dialogue don't help him much as an actor. However, there have been instances where he could have really turned the corner and been a commanding presence and all he has ever done for me is flounder and stay within the same bland acting construct he has since the first season (granted that I quit watching the moment he miracled across the screen as "Bizarro" in a role he had already been playing for several years, if you ask me). I realized that I couldn't ever find a soft-spot for the show when I noticed that I only watched for Rosenbaum and Glover's exchanges. I mean, when you are regularly out-acted by one of the Dukes of Hazzard...maybe it's time to go live at the Lee Strassburg Institute or something. Routh's two-minutes of screen time with Tristen Lebeau at the end of SR showed an infinitely larger promise than anything I've ever seen Welling do.

His singing capabilities and natural range are useless to me when he talks like a teenager and is supposed to be the most powerful man on Earth, nahmeen?

It's not that big of a difference, though. It's his timbre that makes him sound the way he sounds. For example, Larry King and James Earl Jones have the same range, and I'm not talking about singing, I'm referring to the way they talk. But, one assumes James Earl Jones has a deeper voice when in fact both he and King have the same range. It's all about their vocal timbre.

I also know which one I'd choose for Darth Vader 100 times out of 100.

You bet, James Earl Jones has said the only reason he got the part was because of his vocal timbre.

Routh wasn't THAT good. He didn't look like Superman or sound like him either. Sorry, my opinion. His voice was too high. Plus he can't act. I disagree with every word of that. Well I don't. His first 'appearance' when he walks onto the plane after saving Lois for example...Did you honestly think Routh was Superman? Nope, a guy in a costume, that's what he was. What kind of Superhero saves the day in his mum's high-heeled boots? His head is the wrong shape. He has a constant moustache moulded onto his top lip. His Clark sounds EXACTLY like Superman. His hair was combed TOTALLY wrong as Superman. Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind SR, but Routh is no way Superman. It's a shame too, because after first seeing SR I honestly thought Routh WAS the new Superman for this generation.

Let's not talk about the hair. It's been parted on both sides for the past 70 years.

I blame the hair artist.. They could have put a wig on the guy, just like they did with Reeve.

Yeah they should have done something. He just wasn't Superman.

On his own, and without the hindrances of the flaws in Smallville's scripts, I think he would work, better than Routh atleast. He just needs to get the chance to play something other than the "wah wah I don't wanna be a hero!" Clark. It'll be a mark out moment for me if he ever puts the suit on on Smallville.

Daz is right, Routh wasn't good as Superman.
Routh failed to sell the part. He was too bland and wooden.
His delivery of the "safest way to travel" lines was fucking AWFUL and very embarassing.
The poor script, lacklustre direction, the ridiculous-looking suit and generic hairstyle also hurt Routh.

I was merely pointing out that I was not an immature 15 year old kid, as you implied. My post was not that complicated . . . . To those that don't like Smallville, fine. But Jesus guys, lay off tw4s will ya? You wanna welcome people to this forum so to do this you rip the guy to pieces? Good going. I like Smallville, and I liked SR. but Routh wasn't THAT good. He didn't look like Superman or sound like him either. Sorry, my opinion. His voice was too high. Plus he can't act. I agree with most of this, except the voice part.

It's an inherent problem with the series, and has been for a while now. Back when Clark was in high school and still figuring stuff out it was more acceptable and there was a steady character growth that peaked in Season 5. But now there's no excuse for him not to be Superman except for unecessarily extending the show. I understand "Smallville" is a profitable franchise, but if they wanted a Superman series to last this long then why didn't they just allow him to BECOME Superman and go from there? The excuse of keeping the film and television worlds seperate is incredibly lame. If they'd transitioned "Smallville" into a "Metropolis" series after Season 5 then they wouldn't be in their current predicament: keeping a series going that has no more story to tell.

S1980 was clever. ;D In the time the show started, the group who sang that split up AND rejoined.
I'm not a total basher, but I know when something has outstayed its welcome, as you have, legsy. I'll still watch it though, every episode. Now that season 7 is out on Blu-ray, I'll give that a watch. As long as it's better than the second half of season 6, I'll be happy.
I think Welling should be a Superman in some capacity. The last five minutes of the last episode of Smallville, that would work.

I concur. I do want Welling to suit up just once. Even if it's for five minutes.

Well I don't. His first 'appearance' when he walks onto the plane after saving Lois for example...Did you honestly think Routh was Superman? Absolutely. Gave me chills. No he doesnt. Compare after Jason tells him that Lois never mentioned him: "Really? Never?" to: "I see an old man's sick joke!" Loved it. He is to me & alot of other people. You werent wrong. Daz is right, Routh wasn't good as Superman. Many disagree. I thought he was likeable, sincere, & above all, Superman. I got chills when he delivered it. LOVE that part. So do plenty of others. Script could use a tweak or two. Love the suit. Fine with the hairstyle.

A "heck OF ALOT" of fans were.
The general opinion among fans seems to be that Routh should return.
And the general public do count for something & they liked Routh.
This myth that Superman Returns was not well received by most people was conceived by a handful of butthurt comic book writers who think that giving Superman feelings & personal dilemmas makes him gay, & that he should spend the entire movie walking around with his eyes lit up red & punching things in the face.
The movie was well reviewed, it was well received by the majority of fans & the general public alike.
The comic writers I spoke of are trying to take advantage of the fact the the movie didn't make the kind of money they thought it would, & that was in part the fault of the shitty marketing campaign that WB themselves dropped the ball on.
Superman Returns was a good movie, & the sequel can be even better.

Guru, can you please explain how you though the hair style was "generic". Its a strange term considering it was unmistakably the right style, just parted the wrong way (yes, it was)
Although the spit curl looked totally unnatural.

Unlike some I would definitely accept Welling as Supes in a movie, I think given the right material he COULD become a much loved Superman. However, I still think Routh is the man and hope he gets the chance to wear the suit again.
What gets on my nerves is this whole Welling Vs Routh shit. I don`t know if any of you guys read other Superman boards but it`s crazy how anyone who supports Routh has to hate Welling and vice-versa. Out of the 2 I would certainly stay well away from certain sites that are 'Pro-Welling'. As much as I like the guy some of his 'fans' are insane and very obsessive.
I saw an internet poll the other week, voting for your favourite Superman. Welling RAPED even Reeve and even then Routh ended up bottom behind Dean Cain. Some people just have too much time to play with. Someone needs to tell them Welling has never played Superman.
Thats why I only post here, you can have an opinion and its not about kissing each others bum cheeks.
