Arrowverse/CW DC news - Amell & more set for Flash season 9

Impressed they could get back so many previous cast members. Really shocked to see Victor Garber. He seemed ready to move on.





The Arrowverse usually does it up for their 100th episodes so I’m looking forward to it.

I'll give Berlianti credit for this: he definitely is someone who walks the talk on promoting diversity, which is admirable.
(Far moreso than the overpraised Star Trek Discovery and the Seth MacFarlane trek show imo...)

Haven't caught up with my cw superhero watching, though some blu rays and dvds are at a great price now...

Yeah I have no problem with how they’re handling that aspect of the Berlanti shows. Berlanti just seems to have a better grip on how to be a producer than Alex Kurtzman. I find most of the actors on his trek shows leave no impression on me. Even the good more well known ones. The writing and characters just aren’t engaging. Even Patrick Stewart seems like he’s not really Picard. Meanwhile you look at the old faces Berlanti brought back for his shows and I don’t feel any disconnect or discontinuity with the characters. Shipps Flash feels like the same person just 30 years later.

Great points. Most of the joy I've had on Star Trek: Discovery seems to come from the original showrunner/writer Bryan Fuller, before he got booted.

Diggle Returns For Arrow-Verse “Justice U”

“Arrow”-verse alum David Ramsey is attached to reprise his role of John Diggle in “Justice U,” a DC Comics-inspired drama series currently in development for The CW.

In the series Diggle embarks on a new mission to recruit five young meta humans (based on characters from the DC pantheon) to live undercover as freshmen at a prestigious university.

Diggle will oversee their education and train them to become the heroes of tomorrow. Michael Narducci and Zoanne Clack are attached to write and executive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden also executive producing.

Ramsey not only has the starring role, but is attached to direct the potential pilot of the series. He has also signed an overall directing deal with Berlanti Productions that will see him both direct and guest star in more episodes of multiple series across the Arrowverse.

Ramsey served as a regular on “Arrow” for eight seasons through to its end in 2020. Since then he’s barely left the Arrow-verse as in the past year or so he’s guested twice on “Batwoman,” and once each on “Superman and Lois,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”. He’s also directed recent episodes of all those shows except “The Flash”.

The premise sounds a little... weird. But then again, I thought Smallville had a terrible concept but then it turned out to have some really great material during its run.

But- as is... odd premise.

I’ve always liked Diggle and always have time for Ramsey in the role but it’s not the way I was expecting them to go with the character considering how Arrow and Crisis left him. He hasn’t gone quietly into that good night and has been making some appearances since then but it’s not clear if those will tie into this show in any way.

The green lantern tease was a nice nod to the fans but I guess that’s off the table now. Something Darkstar inspired or maybe even a take on the Starheart would have been a nice compromise.

I’ll give this new show a shot if they can get some good characters for the you heroes and deliver a decent show. It does sound very “X-men/Generation X meets Young Justice” though. Might be a way to bring back some popular characters from Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends too and I’m always down for that.

The CW Cancels Its “Batwoman” Series

The CW has officially cancelled its DC Comics drama “Batwoman” after three seasons.

Showrunner Caroline Dries shared the news on social media today saying: “Just got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing [season four]. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes.”

The axing comes as the once-dominant Arrowverse on the network appears to be coming to an endpoint with “Arrow” ending in 2020, “Supergirl” and “Black Lightning” ending in 2021 and now “Batwoman” over.

That leaves three – both “The Flash” and “Superman and Lois” have scored renewals for next season with “Flash” highly expected to have its final run. The fate of “Legends of Tomorrow” remains in limbo but even if it does score a renewal it’ll likely be the last shout as well.

After seven seasons of being one of the most experimental and rule-breaking genre shows on network television, The CW has cancelled “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”.

The series first premiered in January 2016 to fairly tepid reviews that liked some of the cast but weren’t a fan of its generic tone. As a result, it retooled itself after that initial run and embraced the crazy – turning into an ambitious, genre-defying, gleefully silly madhouse of hijinks limited by budget but never imagination – and never afraid to reinvent itself on a regular basis.

Things reached an arguable peak with the third season finale in which a demon fought a spiritual melding of several characters into the form of a gigantic blue fluffy toy named Beebo. That was followed by an acclaimed fourth season with everything from multiple LGBT relationships (including a bisexual John Constantine) portrayed with sincerity and respect, to a killer unicorn goring people at Woodstock.

The show also saw numerous cast pass through its doors with the likes of Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Jes Macallan, Wentworth Miller, Matt Ryan, Victor Garber, Adam Tsekhman, Dominic Purcell, Tala Ashe, Nick Zano, Courtney Ford, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Shayan Sobhian, Franz Drameh and more all leaving behind a legacy.

Co-showrunner and executive producer Keto Shimizu confirmed the news on Twitter Friday evening, writing in a statement:

Well, folks. It’s been an incredible run. However, the CW has let us know that there will be no season 8 of #LegendsOfTomorrow. We are heartbroken, but also immensely grateful for the amazing work our cast, crew, and writers have contributed to the little show that could.

Thank you to our fans; your love and passion for our strange band of misfits has made every break, every script, every daily, every cut, and every mix worth all the hard work. We see you, we love you, and you’ll always have a place on the Waverider.”

“Legends of Tomorrow” was developed by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and Phil Klemmer, who served as executive producers alongside Sarah Schechter and Chris Fedak.

Klemmer and Fedak were co-showrunners for the series’ first three seasons, with Shimizu taking over from Fedak in Season 4.

Sort of sad to hear.... I think because there's so many cw superhero shows I haven't caught up with.... I'm not really devastated. Curious, though, if it's worth buying the Batwoman blu rays? Thoughts?

And I don’t think they’re done yet either. If I were some of the HBO max shows I’d be worried. Legends got a long run but it’s a shame it ended on a cliffhanger but part of me feels like that’s in line with the craziness of the show. I did buy the Supergirl blu rays for the seasons and Superman and Lois season 1- but no time to watch them. Also, Arrow's entire series. Debating on Flash whether or not worth continuing to buy them- but the completist in me kind of wants to, even as I hear it's really not that interesting anymore.

“The Flash” To End With Season 9

The CW’s “The Flash” is officially coming to an end with the upcoming ninth season to debut in 2023.

The network in May announced that next season will be held for midseason, and actor Grant Gustin agreed to a one-year deal along with capping his involvement at fifteen episodes.

Rather than drawing it out, the network aims to have Barry in the whole run as the final season will now consist of a shorter thirteen-episode order.

Both Candice Patton’s Iris West-Allen and Danielle Panabaker’s Caitlin Snow are also returning for the final season. Jesse L. Martin is committed to as many as five episodes of the ninth season, but the number could go higher if his NBC pilot “The Irrational” does not go forward to series.

The news means the series will come to a close just weeks ahead of the planned June 23rd 2023 release of “The Flash” movie starring Ezra Miller. Though Miller made a cameo on the series before, and his film is expected to have multiverse implications, the show’s finale doesn’t tie into the movie in any way.

“The Flash” has been the most successful and longest running of the Arrowverse series with The CW having shed all of its existing DC series bar “Superman & Lois”.

Gustin Thanks Fans Ahead Of Final “Flash” Shoot

“The Flash” series star Grant Gustin has shared a message about the series with fans ahead of filming about to commence on the show’s ninth and final season.

In the posting on Instagram, Gustin thanked “everyone who helped give me this opportunity and all the fans of the show that have showed me and anyone that’s been a part of The Flash love along the way.”

With “Superman & Lois” having been declared as part of a separate continuity from the Arrowverse shows, this will mark the final run of an Arrowverse series – and the end of its longest one with “The Flash” beating “Arrow” by one season.

The final season of “The Flash” is expected to premiere in early 2023 on The CW.

Executive producer Natalie Abrams has confirmed that production on the first season of The CW’s DC superhero teen series “Gotham Knights” has officially begun.

The network handed out an official series order for the project four months ago, following the already shot pilot, and it is currently slated for an early 2023 debut.

The series is set in the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader.

As the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it has ever been.

Cast includes Fallon Smythe as Bluebird, Tyler DiChiara as Cullen Row, Olivia Rose Keegan as Duela Dent, Navia Robinson as Carrie Kelley, Oscar Morgan as Turner Hayes, Misha Collins as Harvey Dent, and Anna Lore as Stephanie Brown.

“Batwoman” Star Is “The Flash” S9 Villain

“Batwoman” leading actress Javicia Leslie is returning to the Arrowverse reports CanadaGraphs (via The Direct).

Leslie has joined the ninth and final season of “The Flash,” playing the villain Red Death with her character recently being photographed on set engaged in a fight with Grant Gustin’s The Flash.

In the comics, the character is an alternate version of Bruce Wayne who, traumatized by the death of his various Robins, harnessed the Speed Force to upgrade his way of crimefighting and then ultimately absorbing the powers of The Flash of his Earth.

Here it’s expected to be a version of Ryan Wilder from a different Earth, and is reportedly the first indication that the Multiverse is back in play following its apparent collapse in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.

This will mark the live-action debut of Red Death who was name-dropped in a past season. Cobalt Blue will serve as the main villain of the final season, though others are coming back such as Captain Boomerang.

The CW will air the final season of “The Flash” in 2023.

Why does the stuff I want to see get cancelled or blocked- and the stuff I could care less about get the greenlight? Oy. Maybe it'll suprise me (like Smallville did to a degree), but... I don't know...
