Warner Bros. 10-Year Plan for DC Movies

In a new article at The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav is said to have reassured the studio’s financial stakeholders that they have a solid 10-year plan in place for their DC properties.

In the aftermath of Warner Bros. deciding to shelve plans to release the nearly completed “Batwoman” movie, Zaslav is quoted as saying, “You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman – these are brands that are known everywhere in the world. We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business where we are going to focus, where there is going to be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. We believe we can build a much more sustainable business.”

Zaslav recently hired retired Disney film chief Alan Horn as an advisor, planning to emulate what Marvel has done with their superhero films.

“It’s very similar to the structure Alan Horn, Bob Iger and Kevin Feige put together very effectively at Disney. We think we can build a much stronger, sustainable growth business out of DC,” said Zaslav. “As part of that, we are going to focus on quality. We are not going to release any film before it’s ready… DC is something we can make better.”

While “Black Adam,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and “The Flash” are all going ahead as planned, there have been rumblings that Warner Bros. could shift their release dates, however Zaslav wouldn’t confirm or deny these rumors, simply saying, “We are very excited about them. We’ve seen them. We think they are terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”

With this new 10-year plan from Warner Bros. to better utilize their DC properties moving forward, and with Zaslav specifically mentioning Superman, it is hoped that a new film about the Man of Steel will be announced before too long.

Studio heads aren't guaranteed 10 years---

If it's the right team in place.... MAYBE it'll be good, but I think if I heard someone who had a solid record and passion for superhero films- like a Sam Raimi overseeing it with hands-on... then I might have more confidence in this.

Brings up some questions:

What to do with the ones that were successful, though?

Does Shazam, Wonder Woman, and Batman all get tabled at this point, even if they were making money?

I feel the same way. New regimes come and go. WB may be sold again by then or the current regime may screw up themselves. They have a long history of mergers and buyouts.

Its not going to be easy to pivot to this new plan when remnants of the DCEU still exist. If those films are hits how do the integrate them into their plan? DC’s a mess and I don’t trust the new management yet. They sound more like number guys than people who know anything about filmmaking. I’m going to need some results before I’m fully on board because we’ve heard all this before.

According to THR, Hamada has consulted with counsel and has now agreed to remain in his post at least until the October 21st release of the “Black Adam” film. A source says: “He’s pausing. The decision has not been made to make this adversarial, yet.”

Hamada assumed his role in 2018 in the wake of the failure of “Justice League”. He was key in bringing James Gunn on board for “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker,” along with giving the go ahead on Todd Phillips’ “Joker” and Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”.

A source for the trade alleges Warner Bros. Pictures Group co-chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, currently overseeing DC until Zaslav settles on new leadership, informed Hamada of the “Batgirl” shelving at a recent “Black Adam” test screening.

Hamada was reportedly upset at not being consulted and concerned about the impact on those involved in making the film. Then, before talent and their representatives had been informed of the decision, the New York Post broke the story.

As chaotic as WB continues to seem to be.... I have to admit- at least it's better than ZERO superhero films like the giant vacuums of superhero films that seemed to happen for years and years at WB/DC.

The Post-Batgirl Fate Of DC Films

In the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery’s abrupt cancellation of its $90 million “Batgirl” HBO Max movie, questions have obviously arisen in regards to the fate of other DC projects at the company.

Whilst the already shot “Black Adam,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” are safe and set to get full theatrical releases, everything else seems not so clear.

Adding to the complications are Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s comments last week about his team creating a ten-year plan for DC and their determination to “focus on quality” and make DC “better” without really explaining how.

Now a new feature at THR has gone into where things stand at the company in the wake of all this. Multiple sources tell the outlet the film division is “pissed” over the remarks and nearly saw the early exit of DC Films president Walter Hamada who was convinced to stay on at least until “Black Adam” opens.

Hamada was brought on in 2018 to chart a new course for DC after the implosion of the Snyder-verse with plans that were said to have included a “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event. Whilst talk of “Secret Six” were rumors only, films based on “Supergirl,” “Green Lantern Corps” and “Static Shock,” along with the J.J. Abrams-produced Black Superman film, were actually planned, but none have attached directors and so will likely be gone with Hamada.

Several projects have been guaranteed safe though, including James Gunn’s DC projects and Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie a Deux”. Also safe is “Blue Beetle,” which remains on track for an August 2023 release.

In a surprising reveal, the trade says Ezra Miller participated in regularly scheduled additional photography on “The Flash” film over the summer and apparently without incident before he was charged with burglary on Sunday in Vermont. Neither DC nor Zaslav has indicated if the film will move from its June 2023 release date.

“Black Adam” has reportedly scored a new post-credits scene “introducing a new element to Johnson’s place in the DC Universe”, but there are no further specifics there beyond the new scene being part of a test screening of the film in June.

“The Flash” Film Coming To A Crossroads

A decision about the fate of “The Flash” film at Warner Bros. Pictures could be coming to a head as the film’s star Ezra Miller continues to make headlines for their controversial behavior.

The most recent controversy came yesterday when Rolling Stone reported that Vermont’s child services department is attempting to locate a mother and three children who have allegedly been residing at Miller’s farm in the state.

THR today reports that with pressure mounting by the day, Warners is reportedly preparing for three possible scenarios according to their sources.

The first is that the studio has reportedly received indications that Miller, whose mother has accompanied the actor in recent days, will seek professional help. If that help happens, Miller could give an interview at some point explaining their erratic behavior followed by limited press for the film and a regular theatrical release for the movie.

The second is if Miller doesn’t reach out for help, Warners could still release the film with Miller not playing a prominent role in terms of marketing and publicity. The role would also be recast in future projects.

The third and worst-case scenario is if the situation with Miller continues deteriorating, Warners could potentially kill the movie outright. Miller plays multiple characters and is in almost every scene so the movie could not be reshot with a different actor.

Were it to happen, the scrapping of a $200 million film would be an absolutely unprecedented move. It would also be a real blow as the movie has apparently been testing well and was also expected to chart a new course for the DC Extended Universe.

For now, “The Flash” remains on track to hit theaters on June 23rd 2023.

The “Batgirl” cancellation saga continues.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. Pictures Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are hoping to mend fences with the film’s star Leslie Grace (“In the Heights”).

As a result, the pair are reportedly “entertaining the possibility of having her continue to play Batgirl in a future DC film (or, at least, star in another Warner Bros. production).”

The news comes in a new DC article in the trade, which next goes on to say “Joker: Folie à Deux” is the only in the works DC film at Warners to officially have a green light at present. It will also boast a budget of $150 million, well over double that of its predecessor.

Partly it’s the cost of the film’s complicated musical sequences, mostly its pay jumps with Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips both reportedly landing $20 million paydays each while Lady Gaga is getting $10 million.

Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” sequel remains in development and does not yet have a greenlight (and is years away anyway), but his “The Penguin” series at HBO Max is seemingly fine.

Stuck in limbo projects like Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 3,” the Emerald Fennell-penned “Zatanna,” or the Ta-Nehisi Coates written “Superman” projects remain that way with no update on their progress either way. Same with the proposed J.J. Abrams projects.

The article also indicates they’re still looking for the DC equivalent of Kevin Feige. While DC’s TV chief Greg Berlanti was reportedly mentioned as a possibility, he’s apparently not interested and already has other TV commitments.

For my two cents...
Still seems like a bit of a disaster.

Berlianti's shows are very watchable (mostly, until they start getting repetitive over seasons and Titans is a giant disappointment)- but rarely have any of his shows been on the same level as a "Star Trek: Next Generation" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

I would have said put Geoff Johns in charge initially- but with seeing his name on shows that have been disappointing (before-mentioned 'Titans')... I would hope they get someone even stronger to be the DC-Feige.

I also might have said Bryan Singer and/or Joss Whedon, but they both got themselves exiled without a redemption program back to Hwood it seems. (And since there's been no courts everything is rumor and second-hand talk, I resist joining in the chorus of things not really proven, but it is the situation that they're on the probably 'never returning' for good or bad.)

So.... I'm curious who would be the best choice that they would consider.
Ronald D. Moore is busy at Disney, (and I'm not sure he's a real fan of comics either), so... any thoughts on who would be good?

Tomlin, Reeves To Pen “The Batman” Sequel

“The Batman” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” director Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho production company have landed an overall first-look film deal at Warner Bros. Pictures.

This marks the first such overall deal made since the appointment of Warners’ new film division CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. In addition, Reeves has re-upped with the Warner Bros. Television Group.

Under the deal, Warners will have first-look rights to Reeves’ work as a writer, director and/or producer. Reeves will soon get to work on “The Batman” sequel, which he reportedly is co-writing with Mattson Tomlin, who did uncredited work on the first film. The writing process is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

“Batgirl” Directors Talk Cancellation & Footage

Think HBO Max’s $90 million “Batgirl” film, which was scrapped in order to take a tax write-down on it, will eventually end up online? Think again.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian filmmakers who directed the project, have revealed they don’t even have any footage of the film saved and it seems doubtful others will either.

In a new interview for the YouTube channel SKRIPT, the pair talked about Warner Bros. Discovery’s shock decision to shelve the Batgirl movie in the midst of its post-production phase.

El Arbi says (translated from French) that they were in the middle of editing when executives told them the film was being shelved:

“The guys from Warners told us ‘it was not a talent problem from our part or the actress, or even the quality of the movie’. They told us it was a strategic change. There was new management, and they wanted to save some money.”

Talking about their reaction to the news, the pair explained their shock at what happened, but also the overwhelming public reaction and support they received in its wake:

Fallah: “First, when I heard the news, I was shocked, I didn’t know how to react. I wanted to break stuff, cry, even laugh. I was like, ‘this is not happening.’

[But then] seeing all the support on Twitter, and even from big directors Edgar Wright and James Gunn, who sent us supportive messages, it was comforting.”

El Arbi says we “make movies for the audience, not for us” and hopes one day the movie will be released. However he admits there’s still a lot of work left to be done on the film before it could ever be released:

“[Batgirl] cannot be released in its current state. There’s no VFX, we still had to shoot some scenes. So if [Warners] wanted us to release the Batgirl movie they would need to give us the means to do it. To finish it properly with our vision.”

They were then asked if they still had some footage of the film, to which they said they had none, and the studio had blocked their access to the production’s servers:

“Fallah: No, we have nothing. Adil called and told me, ‘Go ahead! Shoot everything on your phone!’ I went on the server… Everything was blocked.

“El Arbi: We were [like]… ‘F—— s—-!’… We did not [even] keep [the scenes] with Batman in it.”

Leslie Grace, J. K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton all starred in the film which was shot for over four months in Glasgow.

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced extensive delays for two of its DC Comics-inspired sequels, but has offered some good news for a new entry in another kind of franchise.

The biggest delay is the James Wan-directed “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” which has been pushed back a massive nine months from March 17th 2023 to December 25th 2023.

The other delay is “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” which was originally set for December this year and will now take over Aquaman’s old March 17th 2023 date.

Meanwhile, in better news, it turns out the upcoming “Evil Dead Rise” film, which was previously slated to go direct to HBO Max this year, will instead get a theatrical release on April 21st 2023. The film takes over the “Salem’s Lot” remake slot as that film is no longer dated.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the Sam Raimi-produced new “Evil Dead” recently had test screenings that saw a great reaction and this news marks a show of confidence from Warners in the project.

The same thing is happening with the “House Party” reboot which is ditching HBO Max for a theatrical run on December 9th this year. The “A Christmas Story” sequel on the other hand is sticking with its HBO Max release, which will now take place on November 17th.

Finally, an untitled event film has been set for February 10th 2023 whilst “The Nun” sequel has locked down a release date with that movie to open September 8th 2023.

Journalist Borys Kit indicates that these delays: “underscore what a financial mess Warner Bros. Discovery is as the studio has only enough cash to release two movies from now to the end of this year (Don’t Worry Darling and Black Adam).”

The main one that they should probably worry about is Shazam getting delays, based on the ages of the younger actors.... maybe. But if the fx work can be better on both by being delayed, it might not be a bad thing for the audience...

It is the lesser of the two movies as far as the financial stakes but I think the first Shazam film was actually better than the first Aquaman film. I agree Shazam 2 is one shakier ground because the first film while well received wasn’t even close to the smash hit Aquaman was.

I actually didn't care for the Aquaman film- there were some interesting tidbits but I get that as a visual spectacle, it would get the box office and had ENOUGH of a story....

Shazam is DC's version of Antman to me (in tone).
Safe, fun family film.

The only real quibble I have is their approach of not really matching the actor's demeanor between Shazam/Captain Marvel & Billy Batson. In Geoff John's comics, Billy is edgier, so the casting fit- but for the classic innocent Shazam/Captain Marvel, Zach Levi is great- but not edgy at all (appropriate for his version).

It's like having the Ultimate version of one side of the character, and the classic on the other- and on close inpsection, it doesn't really gel if they're supposed to be the same person underneath (to me). But, it's fine.... not too picky with a Shazam adaptation.

I didn’t think Aquaman was great either. I didn’t dislike it but at best it was a fun throw away popcorn movie. The visuals and spectacle are the reasons to see it. I think that’s why it did so well. That and audiences just looking to have fun at the movies. The story, characters, and acting weren’t anything special.

With Shazam I thought the actors were all well cast and the movie has a lot of heart. I’ve just never cared for the New 52 version of the character. Billy may have been an orphan but he and Captain Marvel are upbeat characters in my mind. The whole “given away for adoption” sad story was compelling but also very depressing for a character that’s always been about cheesy fun.

Right... I usually love Geoff Johns' work, but his Shazam reinvention wasn't one of the things I loved.

Shazam does have the fun goofiness with Zach Levi.... and if both characters were upbeat, tonewise, Shazam could have been more like the Tom Holland Spiderman movies rather than the darker (even though the movie isn't that dark)- Andrew Garfield ones. It is a bit schizophrenic.... but much like Ant-man, it's fun popcorn fare.

“Shazam” Sequel Isn’t Getting Retooled

Filmmaker David F. Sandberg has used Instagram to dismiss recent rumors surrounding the delay of the upcoming superhero sequel “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”.

Not long ago, the Zachary Levi-led film was pushed three months from December to March next year – a short delay compared to the nine months or so James Wan’s “Aquaman” sequel was pushed at the same time.

With Warner Bros. Discovery having talked about a ‘ten-year plan’ for their DC films in the future, there has been understandable speculation that this follow-up to 2019’s “Shazam!” would undergo some reshoots.

That’s not happening, says Sandberg. In an Instagram story (via Collider), he says the movie is nearly done and won’t be touched until release:

“I’ve seen reports that ‘Shazam’ is being ‘retooled’ but it’s not true. The cut has been locked for quite some time, and we’re doing final mix, color, and VFX right now. Everyone’s happy with the film and we’re not going to work any longer on it just because of the release date shift… Definitely not shooting more.”

The major cast of the first film is back for the sequel, including each member of the Shazam family – Asher Angel/Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer/Adam Brody, Ian Chen/Ross Butler, Jovan Armand/D. J. Cotrona, Darla Dudley/Meagan Good, and Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield.

They’re joined by Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren as the Daughters of Atlas. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” opens in cinemas on March 17th 2023.

Dan Lin Won’t Be The New DC Chief

The seeming frontrunner for the gig the other week, producer Dan Lin is reportedly no longer in contention for the highly contested position to run the DC Film & TV Division at Warner Bros. Discovery.

Lin was said to be in negotiations for the job last month as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made it clear they want to find a Kevin Feige-style executive to turn the disparate DC projects into a cohesive storytelling universe.

Terms, however, could not be reached, and Lin and Warner Bros. Discovery have agreed to part ways on the gig with WBD now continuing its search.

Reportedly there is no hurry to fill the job as current Warner Bros. studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are handling the slate for now.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn To Return?

A week ago “Batman: The Animated Series” celebrated its 30th anniversary, and today it celebrated another milestone – the debut of the character Harley Quinn.

Arleen Sorkin voiced the iconic girlfriend of The Joker. She wasn’t from the comics, rather she was a creation of Paul Dini & Bruce Timm’s famed series and quickly became one of the show’s most enduring legacies.

To celebrate, “The Suicide Squad” director James Gunn took to Twitter to share his love of the character and one he adores creating stories for like he did in that 2021 film in which Margot Robbie played the role in live-action for a third time (following “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey”).

Then, in a surprising admission, he directly answered a fan’s question on Twitter if Harley Quinn could potentially return to the DCEU to which he responded with a quick “Yes”.

How exactly? That’s not clear. An animated version of the character stars in her own self-titled series on HBO Max, but Gunn’s comment likely refers to one of several DC projects he has in the works be it the second season of “Peacemaker,” or more likely something yet to be announced.
