For the most part I agree. Maybe not all colorful but all interesting. Rebecca Ferguson and her character have been fantastic additions to the franchise. I thought Alec Baldwin added a lot too. Missed Renner in the last one but hopefully he’ll be back. I thought Rogue Nation had by far the best group with Cruise, Rhames, Pegg, Renner, and Ferguson. But the franchise was known for cast turnover on tv so I’m also ok with new people coming in as old faces phase out.

To me, they screwed up by killing off Baldwin... his loss didn't add enough but his presence added a lot. I thought it might also have been fun to jump ahead a few years for the next one and make Baldwin the President in the MI Universe. Rhames and Pegg are ok, but I don't know if any of them (maybe outside of Ferguson) are used to their max potential in the series. The problem with Cruise's character I think is that we kind of know everything about him already. At least with Daniel Craig, you always felt like portions of his character's personality was kept under wraps. In any case- the MI series is Cruise's main franchise now, and I'm sure he feels gigantic pressure not to take a misstep with it.

It wasn’t really until MI3 that we really got to know a lot about Hunt. I think there may have been something about his parents but I’m not sure if we got that on 1 or 3. It’s not so much that we knew a lot about Hunt but adding personal elements and relationships made the character more interesting. The first two films didn’t have that. Hunts not Bond though he was always meant to be a more fallable relatable spy. Even now Bonds more of a fantasy of the action hero facade. Craig has gotten closest to being allowed to show the man behind the facade but he’s still more persona than person.
Rhames has been with the series since the beginning so he has strong ties to Hunt. When Luther was absent for most of Ghost Protocol it was noticeable and that’s why they brought him back. Pegg adds humor but he’s replaceable. I think Pegg is overrated in general without Nick Frost and Edgar Wright.
I hated seeing Baldwin’s character die so that did work imo. Compare it to when they killed off Tom Wilkinson’s character. Big difference. They needed someone to die to give it some stakes and since Renner said no and they considered Rhames but decided not to it ended up being Baldwin. No one is really used to their maximum because it’s still built around Hunt and they’re their to support him. They’re better used than Bonds supporting cast (compare Luther or Benji to Bill Tanner or even Felix Leiter in the new films and think about who’s had more notable moments). It’s still mostly the Ethan Hunt show.

But, oh well....
