It had a good run so I think now is a good time to end it on their own terms. Plus I think Superman & Lois was designed to replace it and having two super shows on one network might be overkill. A final season will also give them a better creative focus because they know this is it and they know what they’re building to.
Benoists contract is also probably up and I imagine she’s ready to move on, explore some other opportunities, and spend more time with her new family.

Now and then I'm shocked when I realize a 'new' show has been going on for SIX YEARS. Damn!
I still haven't watched season 4 so I need to catchup eventually.
Odd thing is, according to Steven Amiell- he didn't make 'real' money until the initial contract was over with and he could start neogtiating.
I do wonder (a bit) if Benoist initially was signed up for five years, if so, then this is the only year for any 'big' dollars for the future- but, at the same time- in a way perfect timing to enjoy a new baby and be open for other things if possible.
It is good if the series knows it's ending so that it can plan and pull out all stops.
The first three seasons were overall really good--- I think not having too many supporting characters I don't care about helps--- hopefully things can wrap up in a good way that goes on a high.
To me, if there's also a Superman tv show after & they don't want too many complications.... I don't think they should kill off Supergirl but maybe have an ending similar to the last Alan Moore comic of the first big Superman run in comics--- have her give up her powers and become human at the end. That way there's never a question of why she's not helping her cousin in the new show, too.

Yeah. I think as far as longevity they have nothing to be ashamed of. It’s one of the longest running comic book shows ever. Maybe even top five because I can only think of five that have run longer. I think as far as quality it was a mixed bag from the start. When it was good it was good. When it wasn’t...yikes. I do think season one was it’s weakest. Season 3 and 4 were pretty good. I think it took a dip creatively in 5 but picked up some with the Crisis related episodes.
You can get more money when that five or six year deal is up but with Superman & Lois coming I think the network and studio were probably more willing to wrap this up too. Plus a big pay increase isn’t always worth it. Tom welling may have stayed on Smallville after season seven but Michael Rosenbaum didn’t. There’s a reason he was ready to go and he wasn’t even the lead. Melissa’s got to much talent to have so much of her prime years wrapped up in a series that eats up a lot of her time.
I think one of the biggest thingS that affected the quality of ALL the Arrowverse shows is something no one seems to talk about. The firing of producer Andrew Kreisberg. He was one of the architects of all this and the lead creative next to Berlanti and Guggenheim.
