.... who did Donner have in mind for number two?
We know Singer chose another actor for Wolverine before Jackman.
Fun to speculate who else might have been cast at that time...

@cam How about Eric Roberts, who ended up giving a scintillating performance in King Of The Gypsies(that ironically, was ultimately overshadowed by the hoopla surrounding STM!) bore an uncanny resemblance to Reeve himself........before Reeve bulked up.

Reeve’s A&E Biography had William Hurt and Treat Williams say that they tried to talk Reeve out of accepting the role. They were probably up for it and were jealous he was chosen. Actors tend to do that. They could have fit the role as well.

Mel Gibson would have been too young in 1978. He was only 22. But he might have been good in the role a bit later. In Gallipoli he looks like he could be Superman.

Interesting 'second place choices' guys! Eric Roberts isn't as easy for me to see- But I mainly remember him from "the Dark Knight" as the sleazy bad guy. If I saw his other work, I might feel differently. Treat Williams I thought was great in "Hair" and "Prince of the City" (highly underrated great cop film) but while he and William Hurt (ironic how he ended up doing comic book movies later on) were great leading guys, it's hard to see them visually as Superman. I know Donner mentioned using Mel Gibson for a reboot but it was unclear if he was joking or not from the interview. But Gibson's energy is so different than Reeve's that it's difficult for me to see. He was great in Mad Max and Lethal Weapon, though. I was scouring some of the older actors- but one choice that I thought of unfortunately would REALLY have been too young- 18 years old- Michael Pare from "Streets of Fire" and "Eddie and the Cruisers". But this is fun imagining other actors who could have been cast at the time...

When you think about all the people who were either considered or wanted the role it really is a miracle we ended up with the perfect casting. Out of all the known candidates none of them besides Reeve were even close. Just imagine David Hasselhoff or Bruce Jenner as Superman.
I’d also love some confirmation on the rumor of Tony Danza as Superman in Superman III. That’s just mind melting. Reminds me of some of the almost were casting choices for Bond.

I'm pretty glad that Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman didn't take on the role of Superman.... Muhammed Ali would have been interesting, though!

Obviously not relevant for 1978 , but would Marlon Brando in his prime have been a credible Superman?

Obviously not relevant for 1978 , but would Marlon Brando in his prime have been a credible Superman? I think young Brando might have made a good Bruce Wayne- or Joker. He has that sense of darkness to him that I don't see in Superman. If young Brando was in the role of Superman, I think I might have been more scared than relieved if he was in uniform and smiled at the audience at the end.
