Guess it was only a matter of time after they released Batman 66 and Wonder Woman 77. Nostalgia at least gets people to take notice. Batman 89 was on the table as a concept years ago but didn’t end up happening. Nice to see that it’s finally being dusted off. I’ve wanted to see both of these as comics for a looooong time.
Hopefully they do what the Highlander comics did and include all the films in whatever timeline they decide to go with for Superman. Lots of stuff they can do story wise if they eventually go beyond the period of the first movie. Things like what happened to Superman when he was off world for the Supergirl movie. Finally cover an encounter with Brainiac. It’ll be interesting to see if and how certain villains are reimagined for the Donnerverse. Hopefully we also see a Superman 78/Wonder Woman 77 crossover.
For Batman I’m guessing we finally get to see Billy Dee as Two Face. Do we also get Marlon Wayans as their Robin? They mention both but it would seem like a waste not to include both those actors likenesses. Interesting times to be a geek. Now just give me Flash 90 written by Danny Bilson. Tons more story left to tell there. Fill in that gap between the first and only season and the COIE tv crossover. There’s almost 30 years in between them wide open for some cool stories.

13thdimension.com/13-great-illustrations-the-superman-78-art-of-wilfredo-torres/Here are some more samples from the artist of the comic. Pretty disappointing as they are just tracings of screencaps and photos from the films. Hope there will be something more to offer when the books come out. The guy they got to do Batman ‘89 is a big fan of the material and I’d like to see that applied to these Superman comics as well.

And here are some potential designs for the Batman comic. It’ll be interesting to see if they use these. Looks like they might try to blend the look of the Tim Burton movies with the look of Batman the animated series. I can see why they’d do that but I’m not sure how I feel about it. Goughs Alfred with a mustache just looks wrong to me. If anything he looks like this weird mix of Michael Gough, Alan Napier, and animated series Alfred. That may be a likeness rights issue since they did some similar things with Gordon and Alfred in the Batman 66 comic. Bruce Wayne's casual undersuit look is totally based off the way the dark Knight collection Bruce Wayne action figure looked back in the day. The bad guys look to be based off the Jokerz gang from Batman Beyond.

I saw this earlier.... though I wish the artists were switched on Batman and Superman comics.
I do wonder if they'll have the rights and do the Mankiewicz version of Superman II.... and/or are they going to keep the Brando version of Jor-el???
In any case, I'm sure I"ll be picking each issue but I'm hoping that the creative team chosen is the right one....

Gary Frank is the droid you’re looking for. Three droids.... The Geoff Johns unit and the Gary Frank/Jon Siball units!

Johns’ kind of been there done that with Donner on the Last Son storyline. I’m looking more forward to seeing a storyline written by someone well versed in the films and comics of that era to bring us something that could have been filmed back then. Robert Meyer Burnett just came to mind for me.
I’m hoping these books are a big enough success for us to see an adaptation of the various drafts of Superman Lives. One can be Smith’s original screenplay and another could be more Burton inspired once he came onboard.

Gary Frank would be fine but I’m hoping they can get someone even better who can capture the looks and spirits of the films as well as bring something fresh and exciting. Or better yet give several artists shots like they did with Batman 66. I’d like to see various interpretations as long as they’re good.
Since WB is so gung ho to embrace the multiverse everything should potently be on the table. Not only all the unused Superman scripts but Batman scripts too. George a Miller’s Justice League is another one. Dust of that Superman And The Secret Planet script too.
The problem with that would be the status of George Reeves estate and all the other likeness rights they’d have to work out. It would be worse than what they had to deal with on the Batman 66 books.

What I'm curious about is: Did they make a deal for likenesses longterm? And, if so, how many actors did they make a deal for? Brando? Kidder? McClure? What happened on the Batman 66 books, though? Can you share?

For whatever reason they couldn’t work out the likeness rights for some actors involved with the show. Not sure if it was a cost issue, the estates simply having no interest, or not being able to contact anyone. I know they couldn’t get them for Neil Hamilton and Madge Blake and I suspect Alan Napier may have been part of it too but his may have been worked out down the line. Some of the bad guys also looked different. They had to slightly alter the the way several characters looked.
It carried over to the two animated films too. Instead of looking like Neil Hamilton Gordon looked like the character model from the 1968 Filmation Batman cartoon series. A lot of these people have been dead for a long time so that complicated things. Especially if their heirs have passed on too and there’s some dispute on who gets what or what control over the estate. I’m pretty sure on the Superman side John Hamilton’s son just died in the last few years so what’s the status there?
Batman 89 is going to be interesting if they ever plan on doing anything with Nicholson’s Joker like a flashback. He charges a ridiculously high amount for the use of his likeness. It’s one reason we recently haven’t seen many smaller more affordable toys that use it. It’s usually the high end stuff like Hot Toys that has his likeness. The setting of post Batman Returns conveniently lets them avoid the entire issue if they want to though.
There might be a loophole for short one off appearances. They drew the Daily Planet crew to look exactly like the Adventures of Superman cast when they appeared in the Batman 66 comic for cameos. Hard to imagine they paid to use them for something that small. Of course there’s the possibility their likenesses may have been part of a package deal with the show if they’re used for anything related to it. Smarter people than me would be able to tell you.

Thanks for sharing.... wow, I can imagine the headaches just based on the bits you shared, though. An update on the comic: It's a limited series (for now) for both Batman and Superman. I still wish there were a stronger artist chosen for Superman that had a more realistic style... but maybe the simplification skates over likenesses issues for Kidder and crew...

I doubt that’s it. If they didn’t want them to look like them they’d just make minor changes. He probably fit the tone they were going for or had a passion for the project or both. I’m going to wait to see the finished product before I dismiss his work just yet.

If there was going to be (well... there IS going to be)- a Superman Reeve comic, I really wasn't hoping for a Darwyn Cooke-ish style.... but.... I'm buying it regardless...
