Those are gorgeous, I saw those. Also, the pre-orders for the Hardback collection of the Superman reeve comics is already sold out on Amazon!!! Wowza.

Likeness could use a redo on this one. Doesn’t look much like Reeve to me.

I don't know- I actually think it's pretty good compared to the others. I have a wait and see attitude but I wish there was some hint that they were going to follow what Donner/Mank really might have done.
I think when I started noticing even the 'masters' having imperfections with likenesses (and trying to draw them myself, though I would hardly claim to be a master)- likenesses are just... DIFFICULT.

The eyes are fine but it’s from the lower nose down that’s off. The mouth and chin look wrong. The nose is a bit too wide and the lips too full. Reminds me of a young Brian Thompson.
As far as following what Donner would have done supposedly Donner said a few years ago that Brainiac was one of the things he considered so they’re on the right track. This will probably be like the way Two Face was used in Harlan Ellison’s unfilmed Batman script being the foundation for the way two face was used in the Batman 66 comic vs the Batman vs Two Face animated movie. They’re all influenced by Ellison’s script to varying degrees. Some more than others.

I viewed a summary of his original classic Trek tv script- was amazing! Donner had a good visual sense of taste= but also of honoring what came before in his adaptation.... I would have LOVED to have seen how he would have presented Brainiac back in the 80's--- I'm imagining a high quality actor in green makeup.... but it's a pity no one who interviewed Donner and Mank ever pressed for more details on their 'what if' versions of what would have been the subsequent sequels- But then again... I pressed the writer of Terminator 2 at a panel (Will WIsher I believe) for what he and Cameron would have done for T3 as the time had long passed where it was possible, but he kept mum on it- I imagine it's about not giving any ideas away for free, but... would have been nice to have known more of the 'what would we have gotten' or more of a hint of it. I do think we would have gotten an expanded supporting cast with Cat Grant and Steve Lombard- that would have been a lot of fun... it was neat to see Cat Grant (For one seasson only oddly) in Lois and Clark, but odd that subsequent adaptations (including Superman Returns) didn't take advantage of that pre-existing material to draw from.

I’ve heard that Lombard was in Puzo’s original script for Superman and he was supposed to be a romantic rival to Clark for Lois’ affections and they were eyeing Joe Namath to play the part. This was when they were going to keep the then current notion of everyone working for a television news station instead of a newspaper.

It’s not a movie script it was for the tv series. For whatever reason they obviously didn’t make it. I’ve read everything from them feeling two face was too gruesome for the series to creative issues. I’m pretty sure they used it for the Batman 66 comic though. Been a while since I read that two face story but from what I remember it was ok.

I'd kill to see ANY drafts of the original unchanged Puzo drafts. They might be horrible, but it would be neat to see.

Originally I'd say that with the late Mankiewicz gone, the one who should be writing this is Geoff Johns who went to work for Donner after seeing STM and seems to still be in contact with him. On the flip side, the Brainiac and actual Donner comic book collaborations may have already burned out Donner or made the interest die out-- if he wanted to do more, he probably had an open door for it for many years.

Some of those variant covers are neat, but.... personally, I wish they would have assigned some of the major artists who were famous in the 70's and 80's to do them--- Neal Adams, Jerry Ordway, George Perez, John Byrne & Austin, etc.--- as they were probably the right age to REALLY know what a big deal STM was...

Hey if they can get some of those people great. You answered your own question though. OLD school. Perez is in no condition to draw much of anything. His overall health has been an issue for years but his eyesight is really bad. I saw some of his recent work and it was so sad to see compared to what he used to be able to do. God bless him though. Sometimes I think we don’t realize how old some of these guys are. When you get older sometimes things happen. There’s a reason we don’t see some of them working as much anymore. Byrne has basically gotten himself blackballed from the big companies. He’s got no one to blame but himself there.

So is Mike Grell and Ordway... but who knows what the politics are around them with the publishers- could be the asking price, too? Pity that Byrne was passionate about doing SUperman II the comic but that the plug got pulled- would have been great to see.

Like you said asking price and are they willing to pencil full issues on that kind of schedule now for what DC is willing to pay. That’s why a lot of these artists have moved on to work outside of comics. Ordway did just do a cover for the Batman 89 comic so he did work for DC on one of these books.

So Brainiac will have two looks in this? Green skinned robot and silver skeletal robot? Looking at Luthor and how much Batman 89 is combining visual elements of the Batman movies with Batman TAS I wonder if Superman 78 will draw some inspiration from certain cartoons. The way Luthor looks wearing that ascot reminds me of the way he looked in the Ruby Spears Superman cartoon. The Superman sketches for that cover are based on on set photos and behind the scenes photos of Christopher Reeve. Mostly from Superman the movie and Superman IV.

I'm buying all the issues, but.... I really HATE their choice of series' artist. Ugh! I’m liking Torres’s art. You can tell he has a passion for the source material. He captures the likenesses pretty well in his style but he’s really good at different expressions and body language which makes the characters come alive on the page.

I might warm up to him, if the whole package works and gives a real vibe of what the movies 'really might have felt like'- I'd feel better if it was based on any plans or ideas by Mank or Donner specifically, but still looking forward to this in any case....

Like I said before lots of on set photos…but he’s far from the first guy to do that and in his case I think it’s working for what he’s doing. Nothing wrong with variation of style.
