On "Fatman on Batman" Kevin Smith talked about Richard Donner's death and how there was a miniseries (I recall) in the works on dramatizing the making of STM/SII--- I don't know if that'll continue, but...
Who would be good casting for all the players I wonder?
Any thoughts/suggestions? Assuming that the story would include casting new actors to play the original actors, would be interesting to also see not just who they cast for Donner and Lester- but also who they would get to play Chris Reeve, Margot Kidder, etc.-
Keeping ears open to hear any more about this project... if it is still in the works...

Did he mean this as a full blown movie like the upcoming making of The Godfather movie or something more like the segments of the AMC series The Secret History of Comics?

I believe he mentioned dramatized but then again you’re right... even docuseries are part re-enactments- but I got enthralled thinking it meant full blown adaptation like an hbo series or such. uncertain right now

I read about this. I lost interest when I saw Kevin Smith was involved. Get someone really good involved and it could be something special. It’s a great idea. I’ve always wanted to see something like that for not only Superman the movies production but for the characters entire history. I always envisioned something sort of like HBO’s Band of Brothers or From The Earth to The Moon as far as structure. 10 or more entires that each deal with a different era of Superman or focuses on a different project.
One for Siegel and Shusters conception of the character and the early days of success. Another one set during the 40s and the Fleischer studios work. Next the 50s and the Reeves tv show. Then the 60s. The 70s and STM. The 90s and the impact of the death of Superman and Lois & Clark. So on and so forth. Call it The Story of Superman.

Your idea of different Superman productions sounds great, but I think it might mainly appeal to us Super-fans and be a tough sell, even if I'd totally be down for it! With Smith, I don't think he's involved, but if I recall- he stumbled on the project because a friend was working on it & asked if he could meet Richard Donner, who was being consulted on it.

I'd like Thau to do it.
It would be easy to create Richard Donner and Mank and all the actors and crew in CGI.
The Salkinds, Spengler and Lester could be the CGI villains.

In hindsight the Salkinds could have also prevented Lester from taking the lions share of credit for Sii - but perhaps when Donner rejected shared credit they felt it license to attribute full credit to Lester.

Even a STM only project would be tough sell. Hollywoodland didn’t do great. Neither did that movie on William Moulton Marston. They could be great projects but none of these kinds of things have much interest outside of fanboys. Even the stink of Smith turns me off. He’s not making any DC movies but every time they bring him out to shill for them it lessens the entire effort. It just reeks of desperation on his part and WB’s and shows how out of touch both sides of that relationship are.

It just reeks of desperation on his part and WB’s and shows how out of touch both sides of that relationship are. I was thinking about this post for awhile- but then thought of a suprisingly very-watchable miniseries that I originally had ZERO interest in: "The People vs. O.J. Simpson"- the storytelling was so unexpected and interesting and fresh for a story that I was not that interested in to begin with, that I credit the showrunner for how they made something I already knew the story and outcome for, feel exciting and fresh. The thing with an STM making of story that would have in its favor (imo): (1)It's part of a LOT of childhoods- (2)Everything would have the sad foreshadowing knowing what would ironically happen to Chris Reeve (3)Parts are still so hilarious- (The casting stuff) it could still be funny if played out truthfully- and- (4)It probably would not cost $200 million to film. Worst case- it would be dull, forgettable, and be less than a blip. Best case- with the right tone and casting, it could be a neat revisit to those times and dramatization. Hopefully they do their research as there are a ton of stories that could be interesting to shine the light on!

The People vs OJ Simpson was built on a controversial trial that was not only a much more recent event but that got massive tv coverage that more people were either aware of or actually watched. It was a major media and cultural event for a little while in the mid 90s. The mini series actually delivered but there was built in interest already. It’s easier to sell something like that. Superman’s never had something that was that level of mainstream controversy. You’d have a better shot at getting a movie about the Aurora movie theater shooter.

True- nobody killed themselves in the craziness... but I imagine whoever pitched it to whoever is paying for it had to have had some angle or point of view to make ot sound like a good investment. Would it be like an Ed Wood movie tone? (though that movie did terrible box office wise)

It’s a great story…even if you stick to the production of SUPERMAN. Tonally it could have gone any number ways but preferably something more serious.

I think in the end- while I find it fascinating because I find the movie so magical and unique- the stories and problems of the characters in the film are 'problems of the rich or upper middle class' category. That's why I wonder if a lighter tone might work well as a lot of the mistakes sound so bad but so funny at the same time. A lot of things are inherently sad/funny about the whole thing.

I think you can do a mix but it shouldn’t go too far in either direction. It was the end result of a lot of frustration and triumph.

If it's a modest to low budget 'straight to streaming' maybe it'll happen as a one-off film. Miniseries sounded better, but I'll take just about anything at this point.

A story like that deserves better than that. Streaming fine but it really needs proper time money and effort put into it. It’s too good of a story to waste. It doesn’t need an huge budget but treat it like any properly made biopic type of project. Movie or miniseries or whatever.

At this stage... sadly, I really worry about the whole idea of enough movie theatres surviving to overcome the competition with streaming. Those filmmakers who opposed streaming seem to be all buckling over deals offered from Netflix and whatnot to be okay making material that'll never hit the big screen... so.... hopefully not, but it could ALL be 'made for streaming' and the differences between tv and movie production level quality may really be blurred.
