Dead at 91. Thats great run but still sad to see him pass though since I was fan of his work. He knew he didn't have long. He tweeted that it was down to him and Betty White out of the main Mary Tyler Moore Show cast members left when Gavin Macleod died. Said he’d see the gang “in a bit” or something like that. This makes Betty White the last regular MTM show cast member and the last Golden Girl.
Asner will go down as being known best for playing Lou Grant on the MTM show and his own spinoff but the guy had one heck of a long career. From that to more recent stuff like Elf and UP he worked well into his 80s
He might be the only actor (so far) to play Perry White AND J Jonah Jameson even if it was in animated projects. Pretty accurate voice casting in both cases…obviously playing off his role as Lou Grant. He’ll probably be best remembered by DCAU fans as Granny Goodness on Superman TAS which was just as memorable.

Funny thing, I found out about this while attending a panel with William Shatner- who was answering a fan's question about why he did certain movies and tv shows in his career.
He talked about how the majority of actors after 30 have to decide to either to stick with it, and struggle to pay the rent- or abandon it completely- then remarked how he saw Ed Asner's career from a distance and how it ebbed and flowed and ebbed again... while, again, constantly worrying about how to pay the rent.
It put my view of Asner's work and life into context. I don't often think of all the work put into trying to GET work when we see these actors onscreen or things given up to perform in movies & tv....

Great story CAM. And you’re right. It must be tough to be constantly hustling as an actor. When they’re done with one thing they immediately have to start thinking about what’s next. Even the people at the top have to worry about staying a success and working as long as the want to. One major failure could change that. Listened to a John Shipp interview about his career on Michael Rosenbaums podcast and it was very eye opening. He talks about how a lot of projects he had planned or was involved with simply died because of Covid and says he was lucky because he still had work compared to his theater friends. They also talked about transitioning from the lead roles to the supporting roles or dad roles and how an actor deals with that.
