Superman 4 still leaves one feeling good.
MoS leaves people feeling assaulted, overloaded and depressed
I was there in 1987 , aged 13, to watch SIV.
I was there in 2013, aged 39 to watch MOS.
These are my own personal feelings:
I felt depressed coming out of SIV , if only because it paled in comparison, by some considerable margin, to what came before.
It also fell far short of what was out at the time , particularly Star Trek IV (which in the UK was released a few months before , at Easter)which was almost like SIV's direct fantasy/ sci fi competitor(no other super hero movies back then- lol) for that year.
Star Trek IV was an amazing experience(watched that 3 times in the theater)- IMHO just good quality film making all round......and this is what I expected from SIV.....dunno ...maybe I set my own personal bar too high.
Like CAM said in another thread......the speech at the UN was a standout and relatively well done.
Putting aside the "flat looking" opening credits , I also thought the very beginning with the malfunctioning Soviet capsule was actually very good......right up until the arrival of "cardboard cut out" Supes to the rescue!
I knew then that something was very wrong!
Kinda went downhill from there.
But I am always interested to hear other kids, the same age as me , who loved this flick.
The whole thing on Supermania.com with regards to the fascination and fandom of SIV is intrigueing!
By the time of the release of MOS in 2013, we already had the beginning of the MCU,all of Nolan's Batman,a good chunk of the X Men ever evolving(mutating!-lol) franchise,Raimi's Spiderman + the first Garfield Spidey, the Star Wars prequels,, the Lord Of the Rings + the first Hobbit movie, all of the Harry Potters,The Twilight series(yuk!),not to mention Transformers(ugh!), Pirates Of The Carrabean 1-4, Abram's Star Trek 1& 2 ,Jackson's 2006 Kong ect ect ect.
And for good measure we also had the then 7 year old Supes Returns to compare against.
And that, for me ,is MOS's biggest offense- it failed to stand out from the crowd.
It was just another big ,dumb CGI wank fest ,trying to masquerade itself as something more profound.
I am not much of a fan of Iron Man 3(which comfortably outstripped MOS at the box office) but the scene where the Tony Bot saves all the passengers from Air Force One, was the kind of thing that MOS should have at least tried to aim for(IMHO).
Instead Snyder cuts to a close up shot of Cavill's ripped abs as he is holding up the scaffolding on the collapsing oil rig, when he should have been focusing on the reactions of the people aboard the chopper.
In one way , it's not Snyder's fault that the contemporary competition is quite tough.
But on the other hand , he made absolutely no effort to try something different.
Back in 78' , it would have been quite easy for Robert Wise to make a pseudo type Star Wars lite Star Trek The Motion Picture.
Instead they resisted the pressure to make a wham bam space romp and went with a cerebral epic space adventure.
Admitedly a huge chunk of the trekie fan base got turned off by the Motion Picture , but you can't fault the filmmakers for going their own way(and they still did it with considerable class).
If Snyder had failed trying to do something different , I personally would have cut MOS more slack.
Instead Snyder failed....as he tried to ape pretty much everything else that was going on at the time.
Thinking about it , DC is behaving almost like the producers of James Bond did back in the 70s.
Star Wars came out in 77' and they made Moonraker in 79'.
I would say do your own thing and try and do it well.
