With the $43 billion Warner Bros. Discovery deal all done and the new company up and running, the new regime at Warner is reportedly exploring an overhaul of its DC Entertainment label according to a new report in Variety.
David Zaslav, CEO of the newly combined company, along with top leadership has reportedly been toying with the idea of turning DC into “its own solidified content vertical” with a more “coherent creative and brand strategy”.
In other words, they want to realign things to be more akin to Marvel Studios and Zaslav is already said to be vetting candidates to find someone for the role of “creative and strategic czar” akin to Marvel’s Kevin Feige.
Such a move would potentially impact DC feature film development, streaming series at Warner Bros. Television, and the creative arm of DC itself in order to more closely align the various elements which are relatively disparate.
Sources for the trade say Zaslav believes that the success of the merger rests in no small part on maximising the full potential of the DC Comics universe of characters.
While there have been some successes such as “The Batman,” “Aquaman,” the first “Wonder Woman” and “Peacemaker,” they’re aware several top-shelf characters such as Superman need to be revitalised. They also point to the success of “Joker” as an example of how second-billed characters can and should be exploited.
Bolstering their gaming division will be a part of the strategy too as they have achieved consistency in terms of both critical and commercial reception in that sector.
