In the other thread, it was announced that Cavill is gone and that James Gunn is doing a reboot.
Should it include an origin story?
MoS tried to do this, but it failed. Partly because the origin was shown in flashbacks, and partly because the Krypton stuff was crap.
I can't imagine the origin in STM will ever be surpassed, so part of me thinks it's best not to redo. But then another part of me remembers that SR avoided showing the origin, and ended up being confusing.

Gunn has said the new Superman film WON'T an origin story but the story of an established Superman in his early years. Seems they're taking the same approach Matt Reeves took with The Batman and Feige took with Spider-Man. To me that's the best of both worlds. There's no need to go over the origin in depth again while using a rookie Superman still gives them room to grow the character and establish everything and everyone around him.

It's more or less how they approached James Bond in Casino Royale. If done properly, it could be pretty good. And if Mr Thau is reading this: Mr Thau please create in CGI John Williams soundtrack.

I think they have to establish that this is a new Superman with a new history and supporting cast and show why it’s better than what we just got. Snyder really damaged the brand and none of that was going to work going forward. Like his awful Lex Luthor. That’s why I’m fine with it being Superman’s early days. Gunn’s got a lot of work to do to fix things.

Gunn’s got a lot of work to do to fix things. I'm glad that the seemingly endless Superman live action reboots haven't taken away my enjoyment of the Donner version. Other things I've revisited that have had reboots, might have lessened it- but it goes back to reinforcing how many great choices Donner made under difficult circumstances. It remains to be seen if the new Superman can excite as much as (or even close to) Donner's version. Singer's did in bits to me, even if greatly flawed- but it was so ambitious to do something that no other filmmaker would dare (and still haven't) to do- expand Donner's STM-... I have a feeling at best it might be like Tom Holland's Spiderman reboot- I enjoy it greatly- but it can't really compare to Raimi's first Spiderman movie--- but is a great compliment to it, and Spiderman: No Way Home was so much better than I expected it to be, my jaw was dropping pretty much throughout the whole film- here's hoping Gunn can figure out a way to match the specialness of STM, but of course he'll have to (much like No Way Home) do it in a different way than just copying what Donner did in STM. All of it hinges on his treatment. Will see....
