Not ONLY is the wondeful 1988 Ruby Spears Superman cartoon not on the radar for an official release...it now seems to have fallen off the BOOTLEG map as well!
I was at the Big Apple Con today in NYC. Held at the Hotel Pennsylvania, which (if I know my history, and correct me if I'm wrong) is significant to us as being THE revolving doors in the "S" reveal for the helicopter rescue!
Anyway, neither here nor there. The POINT is, there's always vendors selling DVDs or VHS of stuff that hasn't gotten official releases. Green Hornet, Batman 66, the Hanna Barbera Fantastic Four cartoon, etc.
I made up my mind today that if I found a disc with the Ruby Spears Superman cartoon, I'd buy it. Nothing. Not one. And there were like a DOZEN vendors selling all sorts of other unreleased stuff FAR more obscure than this.
What the heck?

People who had old copies to reproduce may have either gotten out of the game or moved on to other things or were asked to cut it out by WB or Paramount or whoever has a lot of the RS cartoon rights at this point. Didn't that happen with Superboy?
I'd love for somebody to put out an official release. I've got the 90's Swamp Thing cartoon on dvd for God's sake. If that can get put out by somebody then surely a Superman cartoon can.
Then again I'm STILL waiting for full season releases of the 90's Marvel toons like Spider-man X-men and others. I know the Iron man rights should be cleared up by now.

At least you can find torrents of X-Men and Spider-Man animated series', which i downloaded the 90s Spidey series recently. Seems it's just really hard to find the RS series all around.

What was the final episode?
I watched the family album segment that dealt with Superman's origin on youtube and it was awesome!

The final episode dealt with Superman going to some alien planet, I think to retrieve a lost space shuttle or something. Loads of cool alien designs, andyou got to see Superman get a little rough and tumble with some aliens.
A bummer that this show didn't continue. They had plans to have Green Lantern and Hawkman as guest stars in the 2nd season!

I find myself saying its a bummer a lot of DC shows didn't continue. I say the exact opposite about Smallville.
No justice in the world there is.

Unless your Jewish. Then you can loan Death some money to pay his bookie and he'd give you an extension.

last time i went to a comic-con i was talking to some boot vendors and they have learned to be very coy about it- some of the stuff like green hornet or batman 66 they tend to say " email me an address.." because they have been threatoned for copyright infringement. not surprising. one vendor had an angle : BUY / purchase a real item and he will " GIVE " you a bootleg dvd-r of whatever you wanted.

Very cool racket!
I see NOTHING wrong with selling bootlegs of stuff that hasn't been given an official release. If the studios are too cheap/stupid to do it, then let the fans run wild. I think the guys who sell TRUE bootlegs, of stuff that has been officially released are the ones who screw shit up for everyone else.
Things I would buy via official release on the RELEASE DATE if they were put out...
Ruby Spears Superman Batman 1966 Green Hornet Hannah Barbera Fantastic Four cartoon (the old one, with the awesome Alex Toth character designs)
I DID wait for an official release of Brisco County Jr, and this was AFTER I had e-mailed Bruce Campbell and he sent me an e-mail asking about an official release, to which his response was "Don't hold your breath, so shop smart." I waited another year, and lo and behold, got an official version...which I totally scooped up!
Every con I go to, I have to resist Green Hornet and Batman 66, though. Because I just KNOW as soon as I buy them, they'll be released, with all sorts of re-mastered goodies, a soundtrack disc, etc, etc.
But for the other stuff I mentioned? I don't even care if it's bare bones. I just WANT IT.

I don't even care if it's bare bones. I just WANT IT. i would love all that stuff you mentioned up there. especially the green hornet show. i have seen boot dvd-r of complete batman 66 , but it comes from multiple sources and varied iquality. basically at best it would be from the most recent syndication run ( which i think was 5 or more years ago ) or even older runs, and people tape with VHS- then converted to dvd-r . sometimes they would run off a copy to pause over the commercials which would add a generation to the copy and weaken the quality- but heck its the best we'd ever see. its wierd , because the same producers own the batman 66 movie, and that not only got released on dvd it got a few bells and whistles too- so why the wrangling over the series ? y'know - itCOULD be more than squabbling between tv producers and WB and FOX- it might also have to do with the fact that green hornet was on batman 66 - and green hornet is owned by a firm other than WB so there's ANOTHER level of rights ownership. ........siiiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggghhhhhh......... ( i used to email a guy who had EVERYTHING on vhs , and he sold episodes for 5 bux an episode - 5 episodes a tape. good quality . low-gen tv broadcast . got all the STTNG borg eps from him ears ago. lost track of him though. )

A couple of encouraging things about a Batman 66 release...
Apparently, in order to clear up some of the rights entanglements regarding Watchmen, one of the things being used as a bargaining chip is Batman 66.
That new Batman cartoon (see my other thread) has LOADS of homages to Bat66 in it. What this tells me (here comes my conspiracy theory) is that DC/WB is finally over their self-imposed editorial moratorium on ANY incarnation of Batman that contradicts the post-1986 MY PARENTS ARE DEAD/I'M THE GODDAMN BATMAN!!!! scheming semi-psycho that they've been so carefully cramming down our throats for a generation, and are now going to "allow" us to have our Adam West fix again.

Sci Fi Channel was airing Batman about 5 years ago. Then TV land aired it at the same time they did until they aired it exclusively on cable.
American Life TV airs Batman NOW along with Green Hornet but their prints of Batman aren't as sharp as the Sci Fi/TV Land ones.
Man I was JUST thinking about that today. Its my favorite version of the FF on film or tv.

Just got an e-mail from TVShowsonDVD.com saying WB is releasing the Ruby-Spears Superman series on DVD on November 3rd. Great news for those who have been waiting for it to come out. (Though it figures that they'd announce this just days after I finished transferring my tapes of the series to DVD ) Read about it here: www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Superman-Ruby-Spears/12402Once that's done, it's time to get the rest of the "Superboy" series out (we can only hope!).
