Published by Jennifer Vineyard on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 2:45 pm. There were a lot of things wrong with the last Superman movie — but the filmmakers did manage to find an actor with an uncanny resemblance to the late Christopher Reeve. Was casting Brandon Routh a good thing? Does that honor Reeve’s memory?
Not necessarily, said Reeve’s son Matthew, during a recent fundraising event called “A Magical Evening” to benefit the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation in New York. Matthew, along with his sister Alexandra and younger brother Will, do a lot of work to honor the actor we all think of as the Superman by aiding fundraising efforts to cure paralysis.
The Foundation’s raised $20 million so far, and on Monday, proved the money is going to good use by showing how they’ve helped one soldier, Lt. Reinaldo Gonzalez, recover. Told he would never walk again after coming home from the war injured, he actually walked on stage at the event. That is what honors Reeve, who in the hearts of his biggest fans, his three children, can never be replaced.
“As far as we’re concerned, there’s only ever going to be one Superman,” Matthew laughed.
So instead of worrying whether they should keep Routh or try to cast yet another actor who looks like Christopher Reeve in the upcoming reboot, Matthew suggested that Warner Bros. focus more on the story this next time around.
“There were lots of plot lines established, and it was very faithful to the original Donner films and sequels,” he told us, “and I’d be curious to know how some of those plot lines in the last one will be continued or abandoned. If you look at ‘The Dark Knight,’ that was a phenomenal movie, and hopefully they can do something as good with the next version of this one. It could be.”
Matthew’s advice, then, was this: “There are lots of fans of the comics and the films my dad did and the new one, and you can never please everyone. So just be original and creative and exciting, and I’m sure it will be successful.”
What do you think Warner Bros. should do with the next Superman film? Should it be darker? Should they bring Brandon Routh back? Should it be an 8-hour epic? Let us know in the comments! splashpage.mtv.com/2008/11/18/christopher-reeves-son-on-how-to-make-the-next-superman-movie-just-be-original/ Original? Oh, like Abrams or Burton? ... I can now see all the haters repeating the same crap over and over: "Routh was just a cheap imitation of Reeve", "Routh is a Reeve clone", etc, etc......

If you ask me, Routh had "Lazenby" syndrome. Stuck in a certain way of doing things of what came before. Hopefully, he'll break out next time and own the role.
On the subject of the article, sounds like he's got it right. DK set the bar up, so as long as it's original it'll help. And it seems all we can talk about now in the reboot thread is of what they'll follow or ignore. We all seem curious about it, including Matthew.

Routh had a lot to work against at the time and considering that he did remarkably well. I don't think he'll go down as the George Lazenby or Val Kilmer of Supermans (they were both surprisingly good in their takes on two other iconic heroes) I think he'll get another shot and carve an even more impressive name for himself.
Routh may not be up there with the two BEST live action Supermen but he has surpassed everyone else already.

I hate to sound like such a bastard, but who cares what Matt Reeve thinks about how the Superman franchise is going? Seriously? Who cares? His dad played Superman. Matt's got NOTHING to do with anything at all regarding Superman.
God, I hate unspurred anti-SR sentiment.

He's just missing them baby blues. Yup, and maybe that's one reason why he reminded me more of a younger Brandon Routh. That's the first thing that came to my mind the moment I saw the pic.

DAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You were joking right? Maybe he means he could take on the role in about 10 or 15 years. He needs to grow up first and become a real man like his dad.

Reeve looked much older than 24 when he took the role of Superman. It looks like he carried that on to his son. He doesn't look 16.

Meanwhile, if this kid was cast and DIDN'T have the last name of Reeve, out would come the Internet Horsies..."naaaaay...he looks to young." "naaaaaay...he's too pretty". "naaaaay...his hair is all wrong."

Will used to look more like Dana when he was younger, but now is definitely filling out into his dad's visage. Who knows, at the rate WB is going, he'll probably be old enough to play Superman when the next movie comes out. Jeez, this kid's only 16 and he's already as tall as his older brother.

If you ask me, Routh had "Lazenby" syndrome. Stuck in a certain way of doing things of what came before. Hopefully, he'll break out next time and own the role. . I disagree. I think he played his own Superman while at the same time honored Donner's Superman. This was a sequel of sorts after all. But Brandon was not the exact same Superman Chris played, and that was pretty clear to me from the start; his Superman was more serious and instrospective. He was the strong and silent Superman. I think he brought new things to the role. We got to see a more gentle, vulnerable and godly Superman. He was also a little bit more misterious in a good way, imo. Honestly, when I watch him in SR, all I see is Superman. I think Brandon was really good in the role. He won me over the moment he said "Is everyone alright?" to the people inside the plane. And this may sound like sacriledge here, but I don't even miss Reeve or Kidder when I watch the movie. He is up there with Reeve as my 2 top favorite Supermen. I love them equally. They are like cut from the same cloth. And I so hope I get to see him play the character one more time, at least. I'm sure he will be even better than he was in SR. And I know I'm not alone on this; A lot of the professional top critics agreed that he was indeed great casting. For instant: Variety: ”…One can praise newcomer Routh very highly indeed simply by saying that he carries this giant film with apparent effortlessness. Thesp possesses a winning, appealing personality that nicely complements his rangy, black-haired, blue-eyed good looks.” Empire: "….But the greatest victory is Brandon Routh. The resemblance between Routh and Christopher Reeve is uncanny (when he first turns around as Clark Kent, you’d swear it was 1978) and, while proving every bit as wholesomely heroic, Routh even adds his own melancholic touch." Rolling Stone: ”At first, his features seem unformed, like an artist's rough sketch. But there's a glint of mischief in his eyes that also hints at depths of sadness. Routh has what it takes to reinvent Superman for a new generation…That's why Superman returns with a bang. Singer tarnishes his hero's halo with just enough sexual longing and self-doubt to make him riveting and relatable. That "S" on his suit has a whole new meaning: He's a Soul man.” Hollywood Reporter: ”This high-wire act would have gone for naught if Routh had not so capably filled the Man of Steel's costume. Like Reeve, he is just right physically, looking at times like the old comic book drawings of Superman.”

I left for 5 years but came back to stalk a user named BosworthisLois... She is much younger and prettier than Margot, plus Margot never wanted children.
