I saw a Poll like this is another forum, and I thought that it could be fun to have one here. So what actress is your favorite Lois Lane ever and why? I included comics Lois Lane for those who may find the live action options not good enough.

Definately Dana! I think everything about her is perfect for Lois! Looks mature, smart and with quick wit! S:TAS is my favourite incarnation of Superman aside from STM!

For me Kidder, not in the way that I think she is a attractive, but in the sense she really shows her love for Superman. Kate Bosworth was OK... but I guess I needed to see some more love than hate to appreciate her more. I didn't like Hatcher that much, I mean she is attractive but she comes across as a bit much... For me anyhow.

Coates was the ultimate template Lois Lane who took no shit. A pity she's not as well known today as the mumsy Noel Neil who is pretty overrated. Kidder was fine, Bosworth was not.

Phyllis Coates did a fine performance, but I thought that Noel Neil gave Lois a much stronger personality- that made for a more interesting dynamic with the George Reeves' Superman.
Based on that version, I thought Kidder used a lot of that, plus her own quirks to make a great Lois. When they had some of the other screen tests for Lois on the documentaries, it's hard for me to believe Stockard Channing was next in line (I thought she was great on "West Wing" and Rizzo in "Grease", though)- she just seemed too hard-edged next to Reeve's Supes/Clark.
In the comics (currently)- sadly, BOTH Superman, Clark, and Lois's personalities are so different in different comics with multiple writers monthly (Outside of Geoff Johns work, which stands alone and consistent) that it's hard to feel like there was a real definitive Lois characterization there.
Bosworth I thought was fine as a softer version of Lois- mainly because it was/is hard for me to picture Erica Durance--- who, to me, really comes as close to Kidder's version of Lois in this generation looks-wise and personality-wise--- playing against Routh.
Durance might have made a better Lois, closer to Neil and Kidder's version, but I can't see her and Routh having any chemistry. whereas I totally buy the Bosworth/Routh connection.
Lois & Clark the tv show had its own universe, I thought Hatcher and Cain were a great match for that lighter version, but I don't think of either of them as the definitive versions of either character. But for that particular show, they were perfect.
So.....the ultimate Lois? For me... ultimately a toss-up of Neil/Kidder as best Lois, but for SR, I can only see Bosworth as fitting.

Um...can there be an "I don't know," button? 'Cuz I truly don't.
Lois sucks. A lot of the time. She's a snatch. It's in the character, it's how she is, I guess, but I just have never really found Lois in any medium to be a character I care intensely about.
I did have a massive crush on Hatcher in the Lois and Clark years, though. If that's something.

My two favorite Lois Lane's are Canadian. Durance for the win!

Fair enough...but I would say that she does help complete the portrait of the Superman character.
Also, even though there have been changes over the years in comix- at the core- she seems to be strong enough and made a mark in pop culture enough that when she's thought of, she's considered a strong female character and not one who's passive or a victim. When someone says a character is "like a Lois Lane type"- the connotation is that she's a go-getter and person of action.
Having Superman as a character that's interested in someone who's strong as he is (in her own human way)- helps define Supes as a character, too. To me, that's Lois' role in the mythos.
Another side thing though to think about:
Based on what we know of the Lois Lane character--- Would Lois stick around for good if Supes were depowered permanently, though, and just Clark?
If that were the case, I wouldn't have a good feeling for Kent. After awhile, I have a feeling (which I think is kind of alluded to in the Lester version for a moment in the dialogue in the car before they reach the diner) - she'd eventually dump him, and he might have realized he made a BIG mistake at that point in giving up his powers for her..... ;p

Noel Nell was uneven IMO. The writing called for her to be bitchy at times, but she couldn't help acting her nice natural self and making laughing gestures
Coates was all business and easily Kent's equal

Its really a 3 way tie between Kidder, Coates, and Delany.
Bosworth is playing a different Lois in a different point in her life. Same with Durance but Durance isn't the actress the other women are. Neil was the first but she's great but a bit soft as Lois Lane.
Coates had that toughness, that intelligence as an independent woman that Lois was so known for and was even more impressive doing in the 50's.
Kidder had that likable curiosity, that tenacity that we most associate with the character.
Delany had the wit and the sharpness. If you could combine all three you'd get the ideal Lois Lane. But Lois as a character isn't very likable...she can be arrogant, headstrong, somewhat self absorbed, selfish, vain, and jealous. But I suppose its those flaws that make her attractive to Superman.
But I think Delaney pulls off all that stuff in a complete package while still helping to give us a very likable Lois Lane at ALL times. So for overall I'd give it Delaney. For live action its probably Kidder by a hair because she had the opportunity to play Lois as a more well rounded person.

Went with Hatcher. Why? Because when the material was there (which sadly, was rare), she ALWAYS knocked it out of the park.
Kidder woulda had it were it not for her mailing it in for everything other than STM.
Coates is WAY hotter than Neil. I hear that's why she was sacked, as they wanted a more wholesome Lois. However, Neil was fantastic, and probably did more for the role than anybody else.
Delaney is perfect, and would have been a perfect live-action Lois as well in the 90s! I just didnt' count her because she never got that live-action chance.
Bosworth is unwatchable for me. She's the weakest link in Superman Returns.

She wasn't sacked. By the time they got ready for the 2nd season, 2 years after the first, she had moved on.
She was definitely hotter. Even the gay Jack Larson fell in love with her, lol

It is between Kidder and Kate for me.
Kidder had fantastic chemisty with Reeve, imo. She had the right amount of spunk, could act, and was likeable in the part, IMO. I really enjoyed her in the role, BUT, I always felt, even as a little girl, that she wasn't pretty enough for a god to fall for her. And she looked older than Reeve as well, plus she yelled too much. ;D
Kate has been the most fleshed out Lois Lane so far, IMO. Yes, she looked AND sounded very young for the part most of the time, but I bought her as a mom. I know, I'm a mom myself. She also showed some spunk in some scenes, like in the yacht with Luthor. She wasn't nice to Clark or Superman at the beginning in SR, but it is understandable why she wasn't, I think; Superman left without saying goodbye, after all, and it is implied (or at least that's what I think) that Lois knows Clark is Superman deep down in a subcouncious level, you know what I mean? That's why she was so dismissing and mean to Clark, even when he had done nothing to her.
I think Kate has played the most difficult and complex Lois Lane so far. She absolutely loved Superman, but hated him at the same time. I loved the changed she experienced when during the night fly, Superman seemed to have made her understand a little bit what it really means to be a Superman, a god and saviour to the world when he asked her "Listen. What can you hear?" And she responded "Nothing", and then he said "You said that the world doesn't need a savour. But every day I hear people crying out for one".
So, my vote goes to Kate.
She grew on me. I think that with the right script that could allow her to show more spunk, she could have been the Lois many people wanted.

When Hatcher was "on" and had good material she was a great Lois. But when she played it as whiny, sobby, jealous Lois it was God awful.
Of all the live action Lois Lanes Coates was the most consistent. That first season had some solid writing.

Of all the live action Lois Lanes Coates was the most consistent. That first season had some solid writing. And probably the most beautiful and classy actress that ever played Lois. Just look at this picture (there are more pics with the link, btw): www.fanpix.net/picture-gallery/521/179521-phyllis-coates-picture.htmCan someone upload it, please?

Hatcher was good in the first season and fine in a lot of the 2nd, but awful afterwards. That 4th season, I haven't seen it since the late 90s but I still shudder when I think of crap like the Wedding destroyer
Coates indeed is the classiest and most beautiful actress of them all.

How anyone could vote for Bosworth is beyond me. IMO she was the weakest link in SR. Had absolutely no spunk whatsoever. But each to their own I guess.
I voted Margot Kidder. However I give her the number one ranking based on her performance in STM and Donner's SII. That's where she had a really good hold of the character, possibly strengthened by good writing and directing.

Bosworth played Lois as less self absorbed than all the others except Neil so I can easily see how she might get a few votes. Lois on the surface is a pretty unlikeable character like the movie version of Mary Jane Watson.

Allison Mack. But for the purposes of this poll, Teri Hatcher. I never saw Allison as a Lois type. She is just too sweet, plus she is a blonde, lol. I see her more as a perfect Lana. Jimbo: thanks!

Well if you've seen my trailers you know I'm a fan of the "Chlois" theory, Chloe Sullivan being Lois Lane. For the first 5 1/2 seasons of Smallville this could have been pulled off without a hitch, even with the introduction of Erica Durance's Lois Lane. But with meteor abilities, Jimmy Olsen marriages, and Brainiac infections they've taken things too far for it to become a reality. Also, Season 8 has finally sold me on Erica Durance's Lois Lane. But go back and watch earlier seasons and all the set-up was there for Chloe to be the Lois of the future. I know canon-ites would cry blasphemy, but would "Chlois" be any more radical than most of the other liberties Smallville has taken with the mythos? I think not, and in fact would have made for a superior story.

Also, Season 8 has finally sold me on Erica Durance's Lois Lane. She's been really good this season. Damn, season eight in general has been kick arse! Just three weeks away from the Legion episode! The Legion episode may turn out to be the best episode of the entire series! I can't wait!
