That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Jack Nicholson stole the show in Batman. Heath Ledger stole the show in The Dark Knight.
Yet there's nothing bad about either of those.

Gene Hackman all the way. His performance as Lex is unforgettable. Spacey comes in number 2. Shea comes third because I felt he was too leaiant as Lex Luthor.

I love Gene Hackman's performance, he is quite a likeable baddie like Heath Ledger's Joker. Spacey on the other hand is a brutal, unlikeable baddie, but I think that was what was intended and why it suits the SR theme.

Superman the movie have the best casting, but I never like to much Hackman, for me, Kevin Spacey was the best Luthor ever.

you see, the thing for me is, when i watch spacey playing luthor, i do just that... i watch spacey PLAYING luthor... i was just so aware of the fact that he was acting throughout the entire movie. he just didn't seem natural to me hackman, on the other hand.... true, his performance is a little lighter in tone and more comical than most would prefer, but when i watch him playing luthor, i am simply watching lex luthor.... no questions asked... disbelief is entirely suspended. so, as i'm sure you have guessed by now, my vote goes to hackman. EDIT: in fact, now that i think of it, was he ever considered for SR? with spacey's material/dialogue, man i'm sure that woulda been somethin!

Voted for Hackman.
A more serious Lex would've aged better, I guess, but he still nailed it and made it look easy. He was such a natural in the role.
Although Spacey was great, I was too disappointed they kept him a bit silly. He would've been even better as a CEO Lex.

he could have been just as serious without the evil businessman routine...which has been thoroughly beaten into the ground by Daredevil, Fantastic 4, and Spider-man.
Maybe if he was an evil Wall Street investment banker or something.

I think Spacy was an obvious choice to play Lex... just like Nicholson as the Joker. Spacy's performance was what it was... cetainly nothing special, and it'll soon be forgotten... kind of 'meh' memory; a mere footnote in DC villiain history..
The REAL question is who will really become the next Lex Luthor and truly make the roll their own and be handed off the torth from Hackman?

How do you know that? Oh...you don't. the "torch' has already been passed to Spacey and Rosenbaum so you're a few years out of touch.

No I mean whoever plays Lex in the next Superman film will, (hopefully) recieve the torch and become accepted as the nect Lex Luthor. There hasn't been a Superman film since 1987... Lex on TV shows doesn't count!

downwithrouth, actually Byrne did infer some infatuation. Buying gifts, "curing" her mother for gained leverage/sympathy, plus had lois strip searched when she was underage and kept a video of it for years and mailed a copy rub it in her face. So there was some attraction to her, due to her vivacity and hate of him. The only girl he can't get is Lois Lane. Don't ask me, I didn't write it.

But in those stories (which there were a few in various books both in and out of continuity) Lex ALWAYS wanted Lois for reasons of ego, power, and control. He was Lex Luthor and he could get everything he wanted. It was NEVER about Love. And eventually he got tired of the pursuit.
When you look at a show liek Lois and Clark or even Smallville Lex being in love with Lois or Lana was totally out of character.

Definitely Gene Hackman. I'm possibly biased in his favor since he's the first Lex Luthor I saw. Also, I liked his Luthor's taste in women ("Miss Teschmaker!!!!!")

I almost chose John Shea...
I love his calm voice - so crisp!
But in the end I had to go with Gene Hackman, since I consider him part of my (Superman) family.
'...and Otis by the way - next time put my robe on after I'm out of the pool.'
