edit - please read amendment 3
starting christmas day - 2008 . one full year , 365 days . catalog EVERY time you watch a superman film. next christmas- we will look back and see who has out-geeked each other. this is a full , scientific " POLL" of actual film screenings whether at home on dvd or at occaisional theater screenings.
AMENDMENT ONE: - why christmas ? because that is a very common occaision many of us watch it . the kids are off school , a day off work. you know the viewing will spike over the holiday. many of us enjoy it as a family tradition.
AMENDMENT TWO :
given the multitude of versions , we have options to record which version of which film you view. as a command decision , i lumped fan-cuts in with international cuts. even though international cuts are semi-official- they are not officially released. the only way you can get one is unofficially , just like a fancut. this is an arguable point , it was a command decision - if every fancut was seprately listed the poll would have to revamp continuosly, and many fancuts have had little distribution .
AMENDMENT TWO A :
superman redeemed - by ADM. this brilliant frankenstien approach combined S3 , S4 and little S2 into a hybrid. does it count as a fancut for SIII or SIV - ? personally i lump it in with 3. you may disagree , but again there has to be a limit so post it whichever way you want.
AMENDMENT THREE
when logging in a screening please make a post in this thread to give the surrounding context . ie : " my buddies and i grabbed a few beers and watched SIII- it was hilarious " or: " the local cinema was doing a matinee of the 2006 STM " this way we wont just have a pile of numbers- we will be able to look back and recall when and where we watched.
also- if you watch a fancut , please mention which fancut editor made the fancut you watched. AMENDMENT FOUR :
lengthy reviews are not necessary . we know these movies by heart, however - if there was some film element that struck you in particular feel free to mention it. also- this is not to compete with or remove the " last movie you watched " thread- this is a very focused poll/thread. feel free to post your viewing in both if you want- but certainly please post it here.
AMENDMENT FIVE :
the scope of the " poll " is limited to the donnerverse reeve/routh superman films. again- this was a command decision.
if after discussion , the majority feel that animated films and " superman vs mole men " should be included i will happily adjust poll options. but again- the poll could easily sprawl out of hand.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S. : note to moderator - sticky this? will it be necessary ? something to consider.
note from Jor-L5150 - this "poll"/census/survey occured to me when we did the last STM chat - but i wanted to wait untill we had a sginifigant start date before putting it up. - it is still several days before christmas - but i wont know how much free time i will have so i am submitting this a bit early.
thanks for participating , i look forward to seeing the results come in.

In rethinking my own cut, I know I'll probably be revisiting the RKS, the Maverick, the Jimbo, and the Verisimilitude Supe2 cuts from beginning/end and taking notes for myself anyways on things that I thought were particularly special that I want to use. Would those be wanted here, or would that stray too far outside of the purpose of this thread? I'm good whatever you think- you put a lot of thought into this, for sure. Thanx

Thanx no actually thats perfect - what we are trying to measure is how often we actually watch any of these movies anymore- and do we watch them more or less often than we think and have we grown to like custom edits better than official versions. so you'd post like this : " january 11th , SUPERMAN II - jimbo's edit " " january 15th , SUPERMAN II - RKS " that'd be 2 votes for superman 2 , subcategory : internat'l / fancut. intially i omited sepecific fandit titles as they are somewhat obscure ( compared to getting offical dvd's at any walmart ) and i didnt want there to be umpteen poll categories for each and everyone. the aim is to see which movies are the most viewed , and if the disatisfaction of the superman 2 versions has led to a lopsided survey. i suspect that STM will get a lot of support in its theatrical cut , while superman 2 will get most support from custom edits. those should be about even with SIII and SR close behind , tied for third . SIV probably lowest and i bet the fancut gets better screening than the officiall.

when posting please indentify as follows :
SUPERMAN : THE MOVIE ( theatrical cut ) SUPERMAN : THE MOVIE ( RDC/2006 ) SUPERMAN : THE MOVIE ( international cut or FANCUT* ) * please specify
SUPERMAN II - thetrical cut SUPERMAN II - RDC SUPERMAN II - international cut or FANCUT* * please specify
SUPERMAN III - theatrical cut SUPERMAN III - international cut or FANCUT * please specify
SUPERMAN IV - theatrical cut SUPERMAN IV - internat'l or FANCUT * *please specify
SUPERMAN RETURNS - theatrical SUPERMAN RETURNS - FANCUT * * please specify
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
i think a low-tech catalog wil work, i'll make a spread sheet and chart each entry manually , than tally it up next year.

Should we also specify the format? VHS recording, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. You would like that wouldn't you? "I watched Superman Returns in blu-ray, on my PS3, on my 46" Toshiba, at 1080p on my Onkyo AV receiver with TrueHD audio, in my leather chair, surrounded by my vintage Star Trek enterprise models." ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

After avoiding the "Lester steals credit" cut for the longest time, sat down and gave it a view to see if I was just being wayyy too harsh on it and try to see it objectively.
Well... The movie splits into four parts for me: * The superior Donner bits * The acceptable Lester bits * The distracting and lame Lester bits//The horrendous stuff that doesn't really even match
* The superior Donner stuff- the recap material; the Gene Hackman stuff; the moon attack; the white house attack; the break into the Daily Planet; the diner; parts of the Fortress confrontation...
* The acceptable Lester bits- the very good opening at the Daily Planet/Change to Supes--- the Paris rescue/opening was okay, though a bit dull (is there any doubt that Supes is going to get there?); the Honeymoon Haven/Niagara stuff was alright; the change to Lara in the Fortress/Fortress romance stuff;
* The distracting/lame Lester bits - to - the horrendous stuff that doesn't even match:
To me, I know I sound like a broken record: the Metropolis battle in so many respects. If there was any attempt to make the scenes match the rest of the film, it's really hard to see. Even within its own scene, the way the stuff is shot in the sky doesn't even match the lighting whatsoever on the ground.
By contrast, take the helicopter rescue in STM that's just about seamless in how the ground action matches the action in the sky.
Even if everything else was forgiveable, there's just a mean-spiritedness to the comic antics of the Metro battle that kind of says: "I don't care about the creative efforts of the original director whatsoever nor the intent. I have a failing career and I'm pissing all over what's gone before... even if it doesn't really even match what was going in the same film just a few minutes ago".
It could be argued that the stuff with Luthor and Otis in STM was just as campy as the stuff in the Metro battle- but I would say that the Luthor and Otis stuff, though, always progressed the story, even when it went a bit too far (i.e.- the ambulance scene where Luthor goes after Otis for screwing up the missile).
So, if nothing else, seeing this theatrical version again pissed me off and gave me new motivation for a recut again. *sigh*

I watched STM: RDC 2006 over the hd and 2000 version because I was curious about the colour change for the 2006. They've definitely tampered with the colours in the 2006 version, god knows why. But to me it looks closer to what I remember - even though it may look worser than the 2000 version. Surprisingly the 2006 HD transfer in blu-ray and HD-DVD uses the 2000 version and not the altered 2006 one.
Sorry to geek out on you there. ;D

new years eve:
superman II : RIC
damn...in a sense this was the first superman 2 fancut. ( sorta ).
i was one heck of an undertaking- a trivia-text trac..(?)... on a dvd-r boot! watching this is so.... nostalgiac
who the heck made this ? was it alex s? i am loving it warts and all.
edit ( post modification ) : 1) the footage quaity on this looks better than it should. considering that its from a 1980's VCR recording of an analog tv broadcast.... it actually looks almost as good as the recent tv-land broadcast of STM/SII theatricals. what a hoot! watching this on a PS3 , RCA brand LCD tv.... LOL!
2) y'know what'd be the neatest SII fancut? i mean a TOTAL nerdgasm , completely unnecessary , just a sheer for-the-heck-of-it kind of thing: a SII green cut. seriously. the SII:RIC was only made to lay the groundwork for what we thought would resemble the donner version. once the SII-RDC was announced the green cut was abandoned.... which in turn begat the multitude of fancuts. so- what would the green cut have been like- hypothetically ? using ONLY the RIC and the bits and pieces and odds'n'ends from the 2000 dvd extra's....

I watched the Donner cut the other day, and once again the repeating music cues and general use of slapstick cgi grated on me once more. So, I've decided to try and make my own cut following the outline of the international cut.I really can't be bothered trying to 'fix' elements of the movie that look bad, instead they will either be cut out or replaced with the original Lester footage. thats one for : SII : RDC ( and keep us posted on the fancut )

Well, cripes, I can't look at EVERY thread on here all the time.
So yeah. I've watched STM 1.5 times and SR 1 time. All 2.5 times were completely goddamn magical. BluRay RULES.

wifey loves it, so its a safe bet. we really geeked out. making fun of the gaffes while getting teary-eyed at the spectacle of it.
i am seriosuly thinking of hiring someone to edit this for me.
probably wont watch it again till i get it onbluray though.want to see it in full spectacle before i enlist a fancutter.

I bought STM on Blu-ray on eBay for $10 with shipping. I got it this morning, I can't wait till I get home.
I saw SR (TruHD Blu-ray) on Sunday. First time I've seen it this year. My GAWD, this movie never gets old. I love, absolutely love it.

So, I was finally able to see STM on Blu-ray. Sure, it's the 2001 Thau Cut, but man is it beautiful! Everything from beginning to end is marvelous. Unfortunately the wires are more visible. I don't know if this is Thau's doing or if it's just the 1080p definition. Either way, it's a must have for all Superman fans.
