It is. What the new recut needs is a different pairing for commentaries: Donner & (or vs.) Salkind ---- and ---- Thau (vs.) Baird. ((Spengler can stay at home and sleep)) Now THOSE would be loud commentaries!

No no no, the best commentary would be:
Margot Kidder......playing Alexander Salkind

I recall in an interview w/Ilya Salkind, that when he & Lester worked on projects, that they both had input on the edits. But.... Ilya in the SII commentary also talked about being very distracted by personal probs during the production and wasn't as hands on as he normally was, so---who knows?
Lester is a good enough director to tell a basic story; it's just too bad he had to destroy a probable film classic and turn it into an okay film with some excellent parts.

Finally got round to watching the 2006 DVD release of Supes III. Watched most of it with the commentary and although I find Salkind very entertaining, he tangents a little too much.
Photography and flying seriously knock SR waaaaay out of the park. Take offs and landings especially are class. 23 years prior to SR ;D

I love how evil Supes slams in CK; bloody brilliant and totally natural.

The landing by the bridge is freaking beautiful. That's just a graceful shot.

I watched Superman II theatrical on the family Widescreen TV. For the first time in a while, I was able to forget the behind-the-scenes shenanigans and get lost in the story.

If Lester had kept just enough serious, (Metro battle)- and not had some of the more clunky scenes (particularly the Lois/Clark cheap scenes at the Planet by Lester), I think SII would have been far more of an easygoing movie experience for me, imo.
As is, it's watchable but I find in talking to friends that had NOT seen STM first, but SII first, far more acceptance of SII. I think it's mainly those who might have seen STM first that have issues with SII and wonder why it feels 'off' from the first one.
I wish I could just enjoy the Lester version as is, but I'm one of those that got frustrated from even the first viewing WITHOUT caring (at the time) who directed what, but only cared after such a mixed first experience of the film.
*sigh*

Agreed- the ending is really inspired on SII. There's a Maverick cut of SR??? Is there a thread I missed?

Salkind is incredibly entertaining on commentaries- even the Superboy S1 commentaries- In listening to him, he sounds upfront enough about past mistakes and gives fair amount of credit to others. Wish more producers/filmmakers were as entertaining on commentaries.
About the photography on SIII.... a little suprised- The lighting is so bright everywhere, is there a particular sequence where you thought the lighting was particularly spectacular? I wish I liked Paynter's work on SIII more, but the combo of the art direction and the lighting felt so cheap, I was annoyed that they even made the Daily Planet set look cheap- but curious why you thought the photography stood out-
The takeoffs/landings, though- easily the best of the films, agreed.

The scene where drops Gus off at Battersea at the end looked fantastic. Reeve stood out perfectly against the light grey pallete. I showed it to a mate just the other week as it goes and asked him to bear the murky, dark (and more more recent) SR in mind. He was suitably impressed.

Hnh. Well, I've always said that enjoying films is a subjective experience. Thanks for sharing what you liked in it, though.
The best bit of lighting for me in that film was perhaps a few seconds when Reeve has a closeup in the cave, and is looking around towards the end.
If comparing the original films, STM/SII/SIII/SIV and Supergirl, I thought STM and Supergirl had the most beautiful cinematography of the lot. SIII and SIV (besides the $2 fx shots in SIV) I thought were a toss-up in the finished print.

I thought SIV had worse photography than SR. Everything just so ridiculously flat. Lacey's apartment stuff was the nadir.
The only visuals of merit in that whole film are most (if not all) of the second Unit background NY plates which are genuinely excellent IMO
But III, I thought, was lit quite well.
