If Superman did not turn back time and save Lois, he wouldn't have an excuse to reveal his identity to Lois and lose his powers in Superman II. Superman learns the consequences of his actions in II, when he finds out the world was taken over by Zod and Co. while powerless. This justifies the turn back the world ending, as it just isn't a throwaway solution.
Agree? Disagree?

I think I get what you're saying--- that Supes knows that he CAN turn back time, thus--- he's ok with revealing his identity to Lois, knowing it can all be reversed? (Correct me if I'm misreading this post).
I think what (and I'm just guessing) people were hoping for were negative consequences to turning back time- so that it couldn't be used all the time. I would have been fine if they decided (in rewriting the RDC, which is essentially what Thau/Donner did) - that either (1) the Phantom Zone got cracked because of the time reversal--- or (2) that the SECOND missile that Superman threw into space (off camera and not mentioned, but was assumed) after going back in time was the one that cracked the zone open.
As is.... what you say does make sense, but I still think that- if Donner had not been fired, we would have only seen time-reversal ONCE, and another device would have been used somehow.
A little off-topic, I know...

Well, actually it's a negative that i'm pressing.
The villains take over the world because he didn't heed his father's advice. In a secondary way, there was a negative consequence.
If lois stayed dead, he would have been in a position to prevent them from taking over the world.
But of course, Superman defies Jor-El and his warning.
And, yeah. There's no way it would have been used twice. And shouldn't.
