What if there was a reboot of the Superman franchise, a la John Byrne’s The Man of Steel. For some reason, I could have seen Mariel Hemingway (with black hair, of course) as Lois Lane and Jon Cryer as Jimmy Olsen. I’m not sure about Christopher Reeve returning as Clark Kent/Superman, but if it was him, I would have liked to have seen another characterization of Clark. Just a pipe dream I just had. What do you think?

No, you have it wrong. Chris Reeve directs, and Mark Pillow plays Superman with dyed black hair. ;D

Hehe. I was going to add that, as a joke, but I didn't.

It's an interesting idea--- but for my own perferences...
Personally, it would have felt a little soon at that time to replace Reeve as Supes- I may be one of the few that still thought he looked great. Lois, I hate to say this, whether it was the makeup artist/and/or the way the performance came out, came off the worst... so I might have considered replacing Lois, although I'm not a fan of Mariel.
A reboot creatively also would have felt REALLY soon--- Plus, with Canon's budget at that time.... can you imagine the production values in trying to top/match in essentially recreating the sequences that Donner directed in STM? I was horrified that even Clark's apartment was done so awfully... *shudder*

Keeping Reeve in the role as long as he was able and willing should be a top priority and by 1987 he was still both. best Superman/Clark Kent ever so the studio would have to be retarded to drop him then.
There's no guarantee Byrnes Superman would have worked on film...epsecially a few years after Superman 3. It ended up tanking on tv after all after a modest start where it barely held its own against a 60 year old crime author and a big boat on Sunday nights.

I wouldn't say that Lois and Clark tanked. I praise it for not trying to emulate the Donner films, a la Smallville, and trying to stick closer to the comics. Bumbling Clark can get quite old. Cain brought a great deal of confidence in the role of Clark, a la George Reeves. That's truely the direction I want to see the new reboot of Superman go. I just liked the idea of a reboot at that time because Hemingway was quite stunning in Superman IV and reminded me quite closely of that era's Lois Lane and Cryer, again, reminded me more of the comics' Jimmy Olsen and Marc McClure looked WAY TOO old for the part.

Even ABC changed their minds about bringing it back for a fifth season. Dean Cain's doing giant Shark movies on sci fi channel. It tanked.
Byrne's great "reimagining" had trouble beating a show about a senior citizen in its first season. Cains vanilla Clark was thr same as his vanilla Superman. JB's head has always been as far up his ass as Frank Millers and they've both been hacks for years.
Byrnes "reboot" was an ego driven wankfest that has thankfully passed like the fad it was, coasting on the success of other better shakeup works like Watchmen and DKR.

That goes with the territory of playing Superman; you might not have a great carreer afterwords. I do agree that it got stale afterwords, but nothing's perfect. Even the Superman films got stale.

Cause they slashed the budget and lost the driving creative forces that were there at first. They also pushed their star to the backburner in the third film.
Cain and Hatcher were ALWAYS front and center, the show had issues when the driving forces were STILL there (Debbie Levine, Bruce Zabel) and had many of the same people from season 2 til the end.
Cain had a weak career cause he's not the best actor...not anywhere in Reeve's territory anyway. Reeve on record TURNED DOWN roles that Cain never could have gotten even at his peak.
The movies got stale because of behind the scenes issues. The Lois and Clark creators simply didn't have the talent or the foundation to sustain the show which was a house built on a shithole. Sorry.

I can understand why they were having a burnout. When your making an hour long Superman television show, you're literally making a movie for each week. At least on a movie, they have a couple of years to think about what they're doing next.
Deborah Joy LeVine left by the first season, by the way.
Reeve turned down roles because they were too close to being Superman. I'm sure Cain turned down other roles because of that. He hosted Ripley's. His carreer isn't totally trashed.

If it lasted 4 seasons, it didn't "tank". THE FLASH tanked, and one could argue it was a better show than L&C. I still maintain that Season One of L&C is as valid an interpretation of Superman as we've ever had in live-action...it's just a damn shame everything went off the rails as drastically and quickly as it did.

Smallvilles being doing that TWICE as long as Lois 7 Clark and even its done a better job than they did and you know they gotta be burned out. burnout is a cop out. The Incredible Hulk, The Flash, Batman, those are shows that worked creatively because they had the talent in front of and behind a camera. Is Dean Cain a Bill Bixby when it comes to talent? No. is Deborah Levine a Lorenzo Semple when it comes to talent? heck NO. L&C was a unique concept poorly executed from start to finish.
I know she did. I never said she was there after season 1. I made the distinction between her and Zabel and the people that were in charge in seasons 2 through 4. Why are you even talking about that?
His proposed role in Top Gun was NOT close to Superman. His proposed role in American Gigolo was NOT close to Superman. Try again. I'd hardly call him taking a role Jack Palance did 30 years ago a "career"
In the first half of season 1 Lois & Clark got its ASS handed to them by SeaQuest and Murder She wrote. SeaQuest was the better show for one thing so its no surprise. Spielberg, O'Bannon, and Scheider vs Levine and Cain? Not a Contest.
The Flash got canceled primarily because of the MASSIVE budget (at the time over a million bucks an episode) and the Gulf War. CBS would pre empt the show because of that. How could they keep ratings when that was happening every week? Thats not tanking.
Lois and Clark had no such problems and the 3rd and 4th seasons were ratings DISASTERS. I'd call that tanking. The second season was the only one that was a solid ratings hit throughout.
The first season had some good things in it...but it was a deeply flawed show even then. When they botch on of AOS's best episodes you know there's something wrong. Trying to outdo a classic at its own game just highlighted those flaws.

Let's get back to the subject at hand. Do you think Reeve would have directed such a project? I heard he was suppost to do something like that. If not Reeve, who would have been an ideal choice to direct?

It never should have happened in 1987 and didn't so no he wouldn't have directed it. Even if it did he wouldn't have been chosen and since he wouldn't have a level of control he wouldn't have done it.

So? I think some would agree that Superman IV should have never happened, so it doesn't matter either way.
