I moved out of my parents house a years few ago, but most of my stuff has been there since that time. As they should, my folks have asked me to sort out what I want to keep and what needs dumping! When I went through everything I found newspapers from the time of Chris Reeve's accident. Since I am clearing out I thought I may as well scan them in and post them. This is the first (from Thurs August 3rd, 1995) - more to come

So sad. I know. Any news about his accident or recovery was always front page news. I can't find the papers from the day of his accident - I don't know where they went to.

Man, they say time heals, but this still hurts. Even to this day.
And when I start thinking about his passing, that hurts even more.

Man, it's hard seeing him right after the accident. He looks so lively and strong still.

I remember where I was when I was reading about Chris' accident - I remember the exact layout of the newspaper. I remember exactly where I was when I heard he had died.
I can never understand how people can be so upset about various celebraties dying - but when it is a man who was such an inspiration I can understand.

I dunno, as weird as it sounds, it seems like a mixed blessing.
If this had never happened, he'd be remembered pretty much just as Superman.
With what happened, not only is he remembered as Superman, but also as a fighter, crusader for paralysis research, and activist.

My mother has always had a crush on Christopher Reeve. She always joked that "Superman" was me and my brothers' father. My pops always played along. Anyhoo, when Chris Reeve passed my mother called me at work to tell me my father had passed. My heart dropped to my feet, I felt faint and my eyes instantly started gushing out tears. I thought my pops had really passed. My mother was really crying, so I thought my dad really was in line to meet St. Peter. Then she tells me to calm down, it wasn't my father that passed, that it was Chris Reeve that had passed. I felt a little better, but I still felt like someone had kicked me in my stomach.

Kinda?
That's just cruel. How long did she leave you hanging until she said it was Reeve, and not your father?

It was, I told her. I bring it from time to time.
My dad wasn't too happy with her either.
I was married at the time, so I called my ex-wife right after it happened. My ex's response was "SHE DID WHAT!”
My mother has a wicked sense of humor, but she does go over board at times. This was one of those time.
She told me right away that it was Chris Reeve that had passed, but it really felt like an eternity.

Like....she told you, gave you space for some emotion, and THEN dropped the bomb that it wasn't your father?
Either way, I probably wouldn't have spoken to my mom for a while after that.

That's the way it happened, I don't know how long it was before she told me it wasn't my dad. It did feel like an eternity, though. But I'm pretty sure she told me a second later. She says she told me right away.
I gave her the cold shoulder for a week or two, just to let her know that wasn't cool.

There is a small article that will be appearing to tomorrows Sunday Express (UK paper) that states Chris Reeve was warned on numerious occassions that he should correct his posture while riding as it was a "bad habit" that he had. He was warned that there was high risk that he would fall over the horses head, if the horse stumbled, if he continued to ride like he did. I forgot to bring the article home from work but I will get it and post it tomorrow. Apparrently it is going to be in some woman's new book.

Ew, that one's pretty depressing. My girlfriend is into horses, so I'll have to ask her about that one.
