I always took notice of this, myself. My little theory is that it has something to do with a link between the technological and spiritual. We learned in II that there was something of Jor-El's spirit or essence in the Fortress. In this sequence, you see the mask thing (which looks to be crystaline) at the beginning and end of this encounter. Maybe its a mechanism that the Fortress uses to summon Jor-El's spirit, like a highly advanced Ouija board or robotic medium. Whatever it is, I always loved the imagery.

I don't think it meant anything. I thought it was done for effect and a neat way to introduce Superman.

I agree with both Belloq and Supes80.
I think they meant it the way Supes80 said.
But, I like to take it the way Belloq said.

Well as we go through Jor-El's eyes I always presumed it was a metaphor for the whole 'I will see your life through my eyes' speech etc.

I take it as how Kryptonian technology works. Crystals. Jor El's crystal face, I figure, is how his essence was saved, captured if you will. When in a static state, it looks like a crystal face. When activated and accessed, the face turns into Jor El's holographic storage files in the form of his face. Kinda like his past conscienceness at one specific point in time was frozen in that crystal file.

What about Jor-El's jock strap? Didn't Clark use it to get his powers back?

Oh I'm sorry. I mean that I always interpreted the image as being Jor-El's jocky cup. It is a mask you say I guess those ventilation holes are the "eyes" and the cod-peice the "nose" but 'eye of the beholder' I guess. See, the I think the audience travels through the GREAT JOCK STRAP OF JOR-EL and we see the great image of Superman wearing his fathers cup in all his glory!! Thus, Superman becomes a man.

That's an interesting observation. Maybe some kind of alpha-male representation on a subconscious level. Possibly sheds new light on Brad's attitude toward Clark in III. Excellent interpretation.

Yeah, I know, I always felt the same way, but the comments on this thread are very interesting and insightful. I'm enjoying them a great deal. And wow.. that scene is indeed fantastic and magical. Love the score and all about it. Thanks for posting it.

When I was younger and first watched it, I thought the mask.. transformed Clark into an adult or something. But yeah, it's probably entirely symbolic, Clark becoming a man, or the son becomes the father.

Maybe Jor-El uses it to cover up any trace of Kryptonian acne...
