NEIL GAIMAN INTERVIEWS GRANT MORRISON!!!!! shelf-life.ew.com/2011/07/26/neil-gaiman-grant-morrison-talk/And Grant continues to prove why he's the comic writer I currently trust above all others. An excerpt where he's discussing the night he "met Superman". It was half-past-one in the morning and I was sitting up with Dan Raspler, who was the JLA editor at the time, and we were talking about Superman, that whole idea of trying to revamp Superman in the year 2000 and deal with all the problems that had been created in the 1990s. Remember when all the imaginary stories became true stories and suddenly there was nowhere else to go? We were talking about how Superman couldn’t solve these problems and we went down into that little park that’s across from the convention hall, and as we look up there was a guy walking across the tracks with his friend, but this guy’s Superman. And he’s not just any costumed convention-goer, but he’s perfect. He was like Billy Zane-meets-Christopher Reeve and he really suited the costume. So I ran over him and said, “This is quite amazing, this is the perfect time for this to happen. Could you come over and speak with us?” He came right over and he started talking in the persona of Superman. So if I said to him, “How do you feel about Lois?” he’d say “Well, Lois doesn’t quite get that I’m an alien as well as a human.” He was so in the character, but what really got me was the way he was sitting. It was this absolutely relaxed pose with one knee up and the arm bent over, and that’s what broke Superman for me. Suddenly I realized that Superman wouldn’t be a poser, he wouldn’t be a Muscle Beach steroid guy; he’d actually be completely relaxed because nothing could hurt him. He could be so open and friendly to everyone because no one can punch him or hurt him. He can’t get a cold, or be damaged by anything you’re carrying or wearing. For me that was the power of that, whether you want to frame it as magical or not, it actually informed the stories I wanted to write. I felt I understood him in a way I hadn’t until that moment.

that sound sa lot like his interview on the all-star dvd features.
i remember when he was doing JLA, and he kept gettin gmandates from DC honcho's "superman isn't that powerful he can't do that" , so he'd rewrite a script- or - "superman is electric blue now- make it work on the next arc" and he'd have to retool his next few arcs to adjust for that.
fankly- i didnt mind the elecrtic blue superman when HE was writing it.

Apparently the cover of All-Star Superman, the pose that Superman is in, that's how the guy was sitting during Grant's "interview" with him.
Gail Simone tweeted yesterday that she got some of the story beats from the first Action arc and wanted to stand up and cheer.

I think this about sums up a lot of peoples thought processes about movie stuff as well as comics. The world can have its rules, but you don't have to be a slave to it. Just watch and enjoy, and forget about the "whys".

Agreed- I think there is a tricky balance on grounding comic book elements and letting others fly (no pun intended)- that some filmmakers seem to grasp better than others.

well, it seems that the biggest departure from real superman to NuDC superman is the (apparent) lack of the kents.
"rogect superman issue 2" is out, and it posits that Kal-L was captured by the military at an early age and held for experiments and so forth. at some point i don't know if he escapes and lives with the kents or not.

The Kents will exist in new continuity, they're just both dead, ala pre-Crisis Superman.

Jim Lee needs to stop drawing Superman.
That is my thought for the day.

I think Jim Lee will be a breath of fresh air after Woods and Barrows (IMO) horrible jobs on Action and Superman.

Jim Lee needs to stop drawing Superman. Don't worry. You'll get your wish. Jim Lee hasn't met a deadline or finished a project in ten years. In 6 months time, he'll be off Justice League. You can take that to the bank.

I personally don't get the Jim Lee hate that is really so popular. Yes he can't make a deadline. But it's his actual art style that many people complain about these days.
He has a very sleek, crisp and sexy look to his art. I like it, for the most part. And it's head and shoulders above many artists working in the field today. I could nitpick his art, but overall it is of a high caliber with a very distinctive style. And I personally don't get the hate. The level of detail in his art is great as well. Overall I am looking forward to Justice League, and will be giving it a shot. Doesn't mean I will be sold on it. But, everything looks good from what I have seen so far. Plus Darkseid has been confirmed as the villain for the first arc. That right there is a hook for me. Has Johns written a Darkseid story? Or even anything heavily involving fourth world characters?

His characters either have two faces. Extreme anger or a slight smirk. There seems to be no in between. And everyone is either skinny as heck or ripped, like HUGELY ripped, even the pizza boy will be ripped if Lee draws him his way. And the poses he draws are just ridiculous sometimes.
He draws like it's the 90's still, all flash and style over substance. There's a lot in his art, sometimes too much, and he is magnificent at what he does, truly, I just don't care for it anymore.
I'm...actually starting not to like Alex Ross so much anymore either...I acknowledge he's a master of painting, but again, there's a lot in his art. Takes me like a minute to examine each panel to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Alex Ross really hasn't done anything for DC since 2006's Justice. He's been primarily doing stuff for Dynamite. I still really like Ross's art, but he can't draw good looking women for poop. But, I could read Kingdom Come everyday, and still love it. That is truly a great masterpiece of the comics medium.
I agree that Lee really only has 2 face's. One for female's and one for males. But overall I don't mind. It's like Gary Frank. Frank can't draw natural looking faces to save his life, but the rest of the art is so gorgeous that I get over it. Same with lee. Plus I guess I am still a sucker for 90's art. Heck I love Jurgens, with his late 80's early 90's style that he is still rocking. God Booster Gold Vol. 2 was so good. Shame that Booster is losing his title in the new 52.

I love the Booster Gold series. Haven't read it in a while but it was so darn fun.
I'm pretty sure Jurgens is still my favorite artist ever. However, there are runners up, of course.

As far as I know, Johns has never written a Darkseid story.
I'm picking up Justice League despite my Jim Lee hate. I'm too curious not too. We're gonna learn a lot about the new DCU based on this first story arc, so I'm kinda psyched.

Jim lee's characters have two expressions : silence and rage.
I.e. Superman : for tomorrow.

Cypher, I didn't say anything about not liking Jim Lee's style. To be clear: I loved his Marvel work, and I think his run on Batman: Hush was one of my favorite depictions of the character ever. I just don't care for how he draws Superman... he just always makes him look like that Marvel villain Mr. Sinister.

True. But his face-- He always looks... well, sinister. And his \S/ is lacking in any style... it's just sloppy.

Not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited. The only books I'm definitely grabbing right now are...
Action Superman Justice League Stormwatch
Batgirl is a strong maybe. Flash is a less strong maybe.
I'd buy more, but I'm so broke.
