Yup I said it.
I like Superman 4.
Sorry but it's true.
I take full responsibility for this position and am prepared to receive the consequences without complaint.

Hey I like it. Call it nostalgia or whatever but I have a soft spot for it. Mind you it's not a good movie but it has its moments. I'll reach for it before I reach for some of the big budget stuff to watch. Of course that's also a condemnation of how poor some of the big budget stuff is. I guess I'd call IV a guilty pleasure? I dunno. Most of its crap and it makes me wince but I think it gets the character more right than some of the later incarnations. Then again how hard could even that have been with the same guy in the figure and two good cinematic blueprints to follow?

Then again how hard could even that have been with the same guy in the figure and two good cinematic blueprints to follow? I bought the script months before it actually came out, so in my head, the effects and performances were perfect. In reading the interviews with Sydney Furie, it sounded like his heart was in the right place, too--- So watching this film always has the shadow of the film I thought it was going to be hovering around. In some ways, it makes the viewing experience better- and worse, by having that 'movie' also in mind while watching it-

When you read the script did you raise an eyebrow when Superman said "Stop! Don't do it the people!!!"??
Didn't you find it strange that he used a line that he already used in Superman II?
Also what was your take on the miserable twerp Jeremy? Did he come across as an insufferable dolt on the page without McLawhorn's crap performance?
Also what did you think when 1/3 of the script you read was missing on screen? Did you ask the theatre management for a 1/3 refund?

Sidney J Furie was a good director. He made The Ipcress File and that's a darn good movie. I don't know if he was right for this kind of movie or not. I will say this the guys resume is pretty diverse. So maybe he did have the skills to direct a good superman movie if he'd had the proper support and time and resources.

MoS had such a huge budget compared to S4, but wasn't much better.

Very true- but then again, he also did "Iron Eagle", didn't he? Which I thought was a little painful to get through. Still-- no matter what, from all accounts read, Furie did have great intents. And... From reading all that was going on with SIV- I have a hunch that Furie might also have been fighting Reeve as well - Reeve was desperate for a hit & if I remember right, also was lobbying to direct the film. Reeve should have felt relieved (to a degree) that they didn't let him direct this, if the time/lack of resources would have made it impossible for anyone to do a great film with this. Personally, if it had to be extra low budget-- I'm thinking of Harve Bennet and Nicolas Meyer - when budgets got slashed for Star Trek II- Harve Bennet came from tv and knew how to do cost-cutting, and Nicolas Meyer is/was a great writer/director who only worked with small budgets.

MoS had such a huge budget compared to S4, but wasn't much better. I still think MOS is a near-miss. There are aspects I really like and thought had great potential, but the parts that don't work are consistent with what I dislike about Snyder's other works.

I gotta admit Sperman was kinda a pansy up until Superman 4. Superman never actually fought anyone until the Nuclear-man battle. In SII Superman basically just dodged the villains attacks and never fought back.

(when he punches himself it doesn't count + it's in his imagination, anyways)
