Most of costumes still use Smallville's model of leather jackets and pants but they look ten times better. They've figured out how to make them look more expensive looking. I still feel it's a little lazy but for the most part they make it work. And when they do try for more comic book accurate costumes beyond leather jackets they usually look good. I like the Supergirl and Martian Manhunter costumes. And I've always said the reverse flash costume is brilliant. Looks cooler than the Flash suit even thought it should have been harder to pull off.
I watched Most of for the man who has everything. It was good but I wish they'd create more stuff for Supergirl herself and stop cribbing so many superman conventions and adapting them. Sometimes it works. I think Livewire made for a good Supergirl foe. Other times it's just too obvious they're just adapting superman stories and ideas for Supergirl.

I actually like that (from what I"ve seen) it feels like a modern version of a tv version of Superman.... with a budget and fx that's not that embarrassed about costumes.
The setup, for sure, seems far more interesting than what I'd seen in the comics during the silver age for Supergirl.... but it'll be interesting to see if they are able to have a long life for this show- which may have the advantage of NOT being tied into the movies...

Fortress of solitude episode is Monday. Vandervoot will be Indigo. I really want to see a better look at their take on the Fortress. the Flash episode is coming soon too. Like you said it's as close to a modern superman show as we are going to get.
I told a friend that I really hate that they are wasting the Worlds finest title on the Flash Crossover. They should save that for a potential Batgirl episode. It makes so much sense to ride some of that BvS wave. Maybe batgirl is off the table because of the films. If not it'd be a shame not to use her. Anybody follow any of the Berlantiverse team on Twitter or some other social media? I wish someone would get the idea out to them.

It kind of feels like WB/DC is the alternate universe version of Marvel:
Marvel's ruling in movies, but the tv stuff is suffering (outside of Netflix)-
With WB, the movies are questionable, but the Berlianti-verse looks like it's going strong on tv.
Like I said, I like a lot of what Berlianti is doing.... but with such fare as Netflix's Daredevil, Game of Thrones, the Trek series (some of them), Moore's Battlestar Galactica, etc.- I can't say that Berlianti's stuff is the best fantasy televsion quite yet.... but pretty good!
Still- with all that's developing, makes me a bit sad (and wondering) how things would have developed if Singer wasn't booted/quit working with the Superman franchise.... Would he have been in favor of crossovers?

Singers seemed gun shy on more comic booky elements so I don't think he'd be as willing to jump into a shared cinematic universe as Snyder. I don't know if Snyder wants to cross over with the tv stuff or not but at the end of the day I think the call comes from WBs top brass. We know Stephen Amell was for the tv and movie stuff crossing over and felt Gustin should be THE Flash instead of A Flash. He was right on that but smartly backtracked as not to look like he was biting the hand that feeds him. Outside of the Netflix stuff I'll say Flash is the best superhero show around so WB may be in position where their characters compete with themselves.
Agent Carter is a great show but it's failing in the ratings for a few reasons. IMO it's better than agents of shield. Agents of shield has gotten better but it feels too generic and by the numbers. Gotham has the same problems even though people say it's getting better. The very concept of the show is absurd to me so I have no interest. It's got the same problems Smallville and Birds of Prey had. Supergirl is getting better but it's still got some of those network restraints and mandates. Daredevil is taking the genre to another level without any of those stereotypical story trappings that most of DC's shows are held back by. The new season with the The Punisher looks amazing.

Yeah.... at Comicon for X2, someone asked him about the Sentinels at the time, and he said he had difficulty envisioning the large robots- but I imagine the Marvel influence and working on "Jack the Giant Slayer" gave him the confidence to do so (although I also feel Bay's Transformer series discouraged him as well)....
Berlianti hit a home run with the first season of Flash, I think (although I'm shaky on the casting of Iris and many of Berlianti's other female casting in his other superhero shows).
Saw Agent Carter season 1 and was blown away by its quality, given I wasn't head over heels over the concept.
Shield started off as an underwhelming disaster..... I liked the second season much better, but it's not something I rush to see at all- let alone a spinoff.
Netflix's Marvel series gives me more confidence..... even though I'm skeptical about the Iron Fist casting (Someone said Dan Stevens as Danny Rand, I agree..... if they can pull off the martial arts- but Daredevil looks pretty convincing). I wasn't thrilled with the Punisher trailer, but am intrigued with the Elektra one out. Hoping even with a new showrunner that it's good....

The weakness of so many of these CW/Smallville like shows is the female leads/love interests. The writers are trapped by having to stick to a formula and deliver so much of the overly melodramatic soap operaesque romantic bs and even then they don't know how to write most of the love interests in a way that they aren't grating or annoying. Lois & Clark and Smallville had similar problems and now I feel Arrow is being choked by that crap. Flash handles it best with Supergirl a distant second. It doesn't seem to even be an issue on Legends because so far they haven't committed to many long term romantic plot lines.
I tire of the drama of Caitlyn Snow and Felicity Smoak sucking up so much of the air in the room so to speak. I like Caitlyn better than Felicity and I thought the earth 2 episode with her as Killer Frost was awesome but they need to let the female characters be more than just the shrewish moody jealous girlfriends. They should be well rounded characters beyond that female stereotype. Marvel is doing that with Jessica Jones because they aren't restricted by the CW soap opera formula. Peggy Carter is doing it to a lesser extent even though this season has also been about feelings for two different men. As the leads Peggy and Jessica are more fleshed out as strong female characters and Atwell is showing she's a really good actress so that helps too.
I think Bernthal is a great choice for The Punisher. He doesnt have Lungren or Stevensons size but I think he may be the best actor out of the bunch. Walking Dead showed he can play a cold blooded obsessive character to the hilt.
I agree on Iron Fist. I think the character has a lot of potential but of all the Netflix Marvel characters I think his is the one that will have the most difficulty appealing to audiences. This is what I said to a friend of mine when the casting news broke: "I still think they should have combined Danny Rand and Luke Cage for a Heroes For Hire series. Iron Fist just seems like the toughest to crack of the four lead Netflix characters."

Bernthal isn't bad, I liked him in Walking Dead, but I think Stevenson's physicality fits best, and I thought he was great in Rome and Dexter. It's hard for me to be objective about Iron Fist, as I LOOOOVED the comic as a kid growing up- and I'm annoyed at the ridiculous controversy over caucasian casting.... It's embarrassing to see fellow asian americans getting all huffy when it's the correct casting going by the source material! I want the show to be great.... I almost wish it was saved for the bigscreen, because of the budgets they get- but there's a lot of great source material. Iron Fist was lucky to get Chris CLaremont early on to really shape the characters in the book. Will see what comes....

I'm all for diversity in these projects but applaud Marvel for not buckling to some kind of PC social pressure on the Danny Rand casting. The show can still be diverse. I don't think anyone wants someone like saaaaay...Shang Chi's ethnicity to be changed. Hey if they want an Asian character on the show bring in Shang Chi. Best of all worlds. Iron Fist could work as a movie especially if they budgeted it like Deadpool. It was in development for a long time with Ray Park but I think they see a character like Danny Rand for a good fit for tv because of the material and the related characters. They can build a sort of urban street level corner of the MCU with these Defenders characters that's doable and can benefit from multiple episodes in a way movie character can't. There's time to develop them. I agree on Punisher. In a perfect world we would have a Punisher of Stevenson and Lundgrens physicality and Jane and Bernthals intensity. Call it Punisher mix n match. I do think Punisher more than any other character should be a tank of a man who is physically dominant. He doesn't have powers so he has to be physically imposing. The guns help but there have been plenty of times where he's gone hand to hand against someone.

Berlianti knows my weak spots with my love of the Silver Age comics- As soon as the Supergirl episode had the statue of Jorel and Lara at the Fortress and Kara looks at the LEGION ring in all its glory, oh man. If that's not a hint of what's to come if the ratings are strong, then, man, what a tease.

PC at times is the right thing imo.... but there are times where it's abused greatly and/or used when it's not appropriate. Casting a caucasian for a character that was a caucasian from the get-go IS pc, imo. Anyhow, hoping it's a great show, and glad Marvel didn't give in to stupid complaints.

I enjoyed last nights episode of Supergirl. I really liked Laura Vandervoort as Indigo. The costume and makeup looked a little too Mystique for my tastes but I thought her performance as good. I hope she comes back because if she's the shows Brainiac I want to see that rivalry continue.
I thought they layed on the relashionship drama with James Kara and Lucy on too thick but the whole subplot of Kara being angry over Astras death and "Hank" taking the blame to protect her and her sister had a great resolution. When the character drama is done that well it works. Anyway I had to laugh when Supergirl chased the missile. Where have I seen that before? The fortress was pretty cool looking but I wish we'd seen more of it longer. I almost feel like it was just thrown in there just to see it because what they needed and how they got it just seemed so easy. I'm like that's it? They went all that way for that?
The coolest part was the Fortress key. It was a mix of the airplane marker and the white dwarf matter key from All Star Superman. As a fan I geeked out a little.

I agree. Hopefully the FOS becomes a recurring set, but unless they keep it going for a season (like Smallville did) or two, I can't see them financially wanting to keep it around. STILL.... If Kara looking at that Legion ring really means that Berlianti and company will have a Legion episode (with real costumes, dammit!) down the line, it already justifies this show's existence imo.

I liked that. Guess it means Supermans encountered the Legion on this earth. Boy I really wish WB would let Berlanti do what he wants and use Superman Batman and whoever. If they're so heckbent on using the multiverse excuse to keep tv and movies seperate then do it. Don't be half as sed about it.
How much of that set do you think was practical and what was green screened? It may not cost as much as a fully practical set. Some shows have used those virtual sets to good effect. I'm sure the foreground of the Fortress was practical but everything else I'm not sure. It does make me appreciate the building of the 66 Batcave set even more. Don't really see much of that now but overall Supergirls sets and effects look good for tv. We are now way beyond what Lois & Clark could do.

My guess is that the 'multiverse' approach is a mixed blessing for Berlianti and company...
If not- I think there would be far more restrictions on what Berlianti could do.
It's a pity that Nolan's disapproval of batman being in the JLA project squashed Miller's JLA. If they had a 'multiverse' policy in place then, who knows?
Anyhow, with Berlianti-
As is, he doesn't seem to be doing such a bad job so far- it's not flawless (the office romance/politics drive me nuts on the show).... so long as he keeps bringing out the silver age elements and materials never seen before on live-action, I'm satisfied...

Even with a multiverse we never would have seen Nolans Batman and Millers batman coexisting at he movies at the same time. There will only be one cinematic Batman. Multiverse is just DCs excuse to keep the movies and tv seperate and explain it in a way fans like. It kind of only works in favor of the movies not the tv shows as far as doing whatever they want. We can't even see Supermans face on Supergirl. They killed off the Suicide Squad on Arrow and weren't allowed to use Harley Quinn. Now it's possible we may see some small crossover of the movies and tv especially on The Flash but I doubt we will ever see the multiverse concept logically explored or exploited to its fullest on the big and small screens.
The multiverse concept does give them some story freedom among their shows but outside of that it would be about the same. JLU And The Batman weren't part of some multiverse but the same character embargo rules applied.

Well, I can (to a degree) understand not competing against one another- but at the same time, it's interesting to me that WB let Miller's JLU go so far into preproduction as they did even while the Nolan Batmans were being made. I wonder if it was WB's 'backup plan' in case Nolan's sequel didn't do well? What I'd read was that Nolan expressed unhappiness with two cinematic Batmans at the same time- then it seemed like 'poof', the plug got pulled, but one would think someone there would have asked Nolan way before if they were smart about it.

Like I said in another thread this is WB they don't have a clue. I think the reason we almost got two Batmen is because Nolan probably said his universe was stand alone and WB knew his Batman wouldn't work when they needed something more fantastical for the League. Millers films have more flare so I think his Batman would have too. Dying for pictures of the weta batsuit to leak. Physically speaking I think Hammer was a good choice. The dudes bigger than Affleck. His Batman would have towered over bad guys but like Cavill 14 years ago he was too young. Even worse really because I assume Cavill would have done an origin story in Flyby while Hammer was an established Batman in Mortal.

Hammer said in an interview somewhere when asked about Miller's JLA film that, looking back, he felt too young to do well in that role at the time. Such a pity that Nolan had to throw his weight around (I assume) and squash Miller's JLA film. If Nolan was going to stick around and do ten Batman films, that might be something else, but since he was planning to leave after the third one anyways.... I would have thought someone of Nolan's caliber would have respected Miller's talent and just let him do his own thing. Sad that he felt threatened by it.

WB just should have had a plan before they got all this stuff going. That's why I can only give them some much credit for these extended and shared universes
Speaking of which did you see Supergirl tonight? Blatant nods to Superman III with the synthetic red kryptonite and a bar scene later on. Lots of development for J'onn and his sacrifice mirrored what Karas sister did a few episodes ago. Karas evil Kryptonians costume reminded me of a few kryptonian uniforms from the comics. I felt the ending was even Berlantis crew commenting on the flawed ending of Man of Steel and doing it right. One of the best episodes yet even though the setup was a bit thin. The payoff made up for it.

Only caught bits and pieces of the episode, though I do plan to get the blu ray if it's offered. (It's getting scary how things are now NOT necessarily released on blu/dvd).

Yeah I've noticed that too. The last few seasons of agents of shield haven't gotten a wide release and I don't think daredevil has been released on a physical media at all. I'd like to buy the season of Constantine but it doesn't look like it will get a release. Maybe because it got cancelled after half a season but even birds of prey eventually got a DVD release.

It's annoying- with the lack of wide release, the Agents of Shield and Peggy Carter blu rays were more expensive than the norm at Target... but here's hoping that Supergirl gets a release. On a side note: Flash blu went on sale for $15 at Amazon. Quite a savings.
