I just realized that Clark really should have used the energy module from the craft that brought him to earth as a means of getting his powers back in Superman II.
Clark waited until Superman IV to use the module after Nuclearman scratched him, but the module should have been used in SII instead.
If Clark had used the module to get his powers back Jor-El would not have had to sacrifice himself.

My interpretation of the crystal scene in S4 has always been that it was a Kryptonian power dildo that Clark finally returned to in his hour of degradation and need. Using that contraption with Lois in SII would have been problematic to say the least.

Well Lois was fascinated by the crystal in SII... who knows what she did with it while Superman was getting the groceries. I suppose it's possible that Clark stuck the crystal stick "where the yellow-sun don't shine" to turbo charge him like a battery... but I'm guessing there was a more appropriate and less vulgar administration of the crystal's power to Superman.
