After Superman catches the building spire from hitting the lady with her baby.. .. instead of simply altruistically putting the spire back.. he looks back at her and SMILES as if he was ammused that she almost died!
The woman is shocked with Superman staring at her and feels obligated to yell "Thank you!" and then.. shockingly... Superman smiles and NODS BACK AT HER as if he's basking in the fact that he got thanked for doing her a "favor"!!!
What happened to Donner's Superman who told the warden that there was no need to thank him???!?!?
Actually I'm just kidding.... this sequence is actually my favorite instance of Superman saving someone in the films.
I like that Supes has such satisfaction in saving the woman... it's like he was rediscovering the "happiness within him" that Jor-El talked about.

I wouldn't have minded it, had it come at a point in the movie where three dangerous villains WEREN'T circling around, about to cause untold destruction on the masses.... but the timing of it took out the reality of the danger of the situation. In the original Donner/Mank script- the tower falls, and people just run like mad to safety while Supes tries to stop it. (A few seconds later, Supes gets ambushed in mid-air by Non, causing it to crash down on the sidewalk. This failure early on in the fight in the script added a level of menace for the rest of the battle in the Mank script that the Lester version lacked (and fought against) in his SII.

No no.. the sequence world PERFECTLY.
Superman felt overwhelming joy at the fact that he saved the woman and baby... that's WHY he is Superman.
It was a great moment.

he he Looks like we have some disagreement here IMHO In 1981 cinematic terms.......the villains were causing massive destruction. Nothing like it had been seen before on the screen. You did have the early 1970s disaster flicks which had a similar template in terms of destruction......and as much as i love the Towering Inferno and Earthquake(even back then as a kid).......seeing a superhero fly around(heck just the flying on screen was amazing enough) actually hold up a railway line or throw boulders down a slope(STM) or catch a spire,use heat vision to blow up a concrete block, throw the villain into a coke sign ect ect were amazing images. I honestly believe if Donner had finished SII the actual metropolis climax would not have been that different(obviously less slapstick) using the technology available in 1979.....he admits it himself in the commentary. In the STM 4 hour version......there are some cheesy moments......it is just that Baird had the bravery to reign Donner in and cut that stuff out for the theatrical assembly. Unfortunately Victor Smith could not do the same with Lester. But IMHO Lester definitely got the "save" formulas down to a tee as well as (if not better than) Donner. Brief exposition(Lois under Lift at Eiffel Tower,boy on railing at Niagra,Woman with baby crossing road ect ) followed by predicament(Lois & boy falling,Spire collapsing on woman with baby ect),followed by Clark/Supes reacting to situation.....maybe precipitating a change from Clark to Supes......followed by the actual save and re-assuring one liners and caring looks(like the one Crown is referring too)+ and perhaps the most important thing of all......reaction from bystanders who are in awe. Singer almost got it with SR(the plane rescue).Too bad the rest of the saves in SR involved the same gormless/zombified reactions we get in MOS and DOJ(oh yeah...we don't even get reactions in MOS and DOJ---from either Supes or the bystanders) .

Well.... I'm going by what was planned in the Mankiewicz script. The rewritten script that Lester had wasn't even as silly as what he put into it (I actually forgave almost everything that came before that Lester put in, but the Metro battle I always had issues iwth). Having Superman fly around and save people and have time to reassure them in STM was perfectly fine imo (for the most part)- I noticed in the extended cut, Supes waves and assures the kids during the bus save... but when saving the men at the power plant, there's an extra beat (that I missed in the theatrical) once he asks if the man is okay, there's a tense and urgent look that Reeve has as he flies off to head off the next disaster (though the 'go ahead take a picture Jimmy' was too much casualness as the dam is breaking in STM's extended cut). It's possible Donner would have included a few winks, quips, etc. --- but I like the idea that the last section would have been treated the way that the rest of the villain sequences were treated by Donner/Baird (and written by Mank)- extremely serious and a bit (but not TOO) darker. Suprisingly, in the script, this time Supes DOESN'T save everyone (cars fall off and hit the ground and its more hinted than explicit)- but in the script (and at that point) we already know Supes' concern for the average person and collateral damage. So- I hated the 'thank you'/etc. only because of the timing. It deflated the urgency of the situation- but the way that the extra was directed to perform it also made it seem way more comedic than anything else (to me, anyways). The villains hammering everything and Supes being outnumbered should have been filmed in a way where there was little time for release or Superman having time to give any reassurance to anyone, imo. But, again, I agree there are excess bits in the extended that show Donner also allowed some silly stuff here and there during some action bits in both STM and SII (beforementioned 'take a picture' and even in the White House when the extra says, "no one is going to break in here" seconds before a soldier gets thrown through the wall by the supervillains). Anyhow, moot point, I guess. But, yeah, as the script reads, it did put in images of the 70's disaster films in my head. If Supes had been shown to be more compassionate towards people in MOS, that last section could have been fantastic. There's a little bit where he shows concern, but it's just not shot in a way (and/or edited in a way) that showed enough concern. The Iron Man/Hulkbuster bit and the last section of Avengers: Age of Ultron got it much more right with their constant concern for the people. BvS's line of "oh, thank goodness this section of the city is all empty" (or something like that) felt like too giant of a cheat. In the end, just glad that at least Marvel gets it right.

When Non and Ursa throw the bus, Superman would catch the bus and throw it back at them, killing all the passengers and bystanders. Instead of throwing Zod into the Coca Cola sign, he would have thrown him into a building and flattened it.
