I used to have Superman 4 and Supergirl rented for me when I was a kid.
Once in a while I would get to rent Superman II which was the ultimate Superman movie I felt.
I finally wanted to rent STM and was confused by the fact that Zod was in it... I thought it was super long and not as good at SII.
I eventually saw SIII on TV at a hotel.. I liked the junkyard bit.
Eventually I had to choose between buying SIII and SIV on VHS... I choose SIV because it had more Superman action in it.
Eventually (1999 Xmas) I finally got SII on VHS. A year later, I got STM on VHS and (after just learning about the Donner/Lester debacle) I FINALLY realized it was better than SII.
A couple of years later I got STM on DVD and then SII on DVD.
5-6 years later I got the Superman movie 4 movie set on 2 DVDs.
Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I had comics here and there from the drugstores (no comic shops existed then); was a fan of Superboy first- then, the collection grew with Superman/Action comics- and then the movie came out & I latched onto newspaper clippings and newspaper reviews that referred to the Reeve movies, and the rare items here and there that related to the movies.

Were you excited for SIV when it came out? Did you think that finally Superman was going to have his glorious return to the silver screen?

Collected all the Starlog (the only place to get scifi/fantasy news at the time) magazines with interviews talking about how it was going to try to be a return to glory. Also, went to a comic convention and bought an early draft of the script--- The low-budget aspect I was able to handle- but what bothered me was how the movie jumped straight into incomprehensibility halfway through by Cannon's over-cutting of the film. With all its flaws, I still like it more than SIII and was just happy enough to have been able to have seen Reeve as Supes on screen one more time.

What was it like seeing SIV in theaters?
was everyone all excited at first when the movie started?
Were people noticeably disappointed by the end?
At what point during the film did you realize that things were going horribly HORRIBLY HORRIBLY wrong?

What was it like seeing SIV in theaters? was everyone all excited at first when the movie started? Were people noticeably disappointed by the end? At what point during the film did you realize that things were going horribly HORRIBLY HORRIBLY wrong? Well.... it opened up in the smaller theatres from the START. (I was living in a place that had the giant 'big screen' theatres and the second run/smaller theatres) The few people (there was no line) that went in were all pretty excited to see it--- The cheaper screen credits effects were a little weird- I was ok with the space station- But as soon as the first appearance of the cardboard Superman came flying at us to save the astronauts, there was a noticeable "WTH?" gasp in the theatre. I had a BAD feeling about the whole thing, but I still thought: "as long as they tell the whole story, I can enjoy the Reeve parts of it"- People seemed to enjoy the movie (enough, though barely I felt)... but once the middle got gutted and Superman suddenly appears at the front of the building and the story made no sense (it did to me, but that's because I read the whole script beforehand)- it was a lost cause. I doubt anyone came back for repeat viewings. Had a REALLY bad headache after seeing it the first time, feeling like the franchise died again. All hope lost. *sigh*
