It's all due to the fortress which explains that the order is STM, SIV, SIII, and finally SII
In STM he creates the fortress but defiesJor-El by turning the world back.
In SIV the fortress is obviously still intact (crystal bank and all) but Kal-EL is forced to converse with the Elder's instead of his father since he defied his father earlier.
In SII, Superman converses with his one remaining parent, Lara, to ask to give up his powers and this leads to the ultimate destruction of the fortress.

This is yet another thing that S3 could've benefited from, having the fortress of solitude in it, which will be included in my upcoming fan edit of Superman III.

Superman III had no fortress AND no Superman going into space.. two thing all the other movies had. I think it made the story feel more ordinary. How will the FOS be used in your edit? Maybe Ricky gets carried away and tells all the kids his birthday party will be at Superman's home in the North Pole?

SIII could have delivered on the dramatic end at least- Reeve and O'toole's talents were wasted completely, by the screenwriters' wanting to make it comedy schtick. (Lois/Clark was also comedy schtick- but there were layers later on to the whole relationship, and little Ricky was just obnoxious as written)

In SIII Clark nearly falls in love with Lana.. but nothing comes of it and she becomes the one that got away. In the next film, SII, Clark decides to at least not let Lois get away like Lana did and so he gets with her.

Well there wont be any "new" fortress stuff, we'll see it in flashbacks, as well as voice overs from Jorel when he's evil.
