When Donner built the FOS at Sheperton studios.. it was such a magical and ethereal place.
It was very vertically oriented too with high platforms and low platforms.. you could imagine Superman flying from one tier to the next.
The the crystal bank stands proud at a mid to high tier overlooking an epic vista of the fortress where Jor-El will appear.
So beautiful.
When Lester rebuilt in Pinewood.. the fortress looks very flat... with the crystal bank on the ground level and dead center.
The fortress doesn't even look like ice and crystals anymore.... it just looks very bland.. like it's all propped up by wood painted white.
Even when I was a kid I noticed the fortress always looked different and realized that it looked best when Lex first went to the fortress.
I was pleasantly surprised when , first viewing STM after having seen II, the fortress had the same look (same shot) as when Lex busted in.
Anyway, why didn't Lester properly rebuild the fortress? Did he make it flat to accommodate that stupid fight sequence?

I wasn't crazy about the rebuilt version either- Part of it probably was the change of size of the studio when they started the reshoots- Second part was Lester's telling the art director that he didn't have to be a slave to the first film (phrased differently but on the documentary in the box set regarding SII) Third, it may well be a redesign to accomodate the 'fight scene' Lester felt was needed in SII since his Metro battle focused so much on the 'superbreath' gags.

Of course the FOS got even crappier by SIV.... by then the fortress and crystals were reduced to crayon drawing made by a retarded 5 year old (like Jason White).

Actually, I thought the FOS in SIV was a painting/green screen, but Capedwonder has a behind the scenes shot of SIV showing it to have been a pretty big (though not as big as STM) size practical set. Go figure....

Go figure.... Look at this pathetic excuse for a set.. its a propped up cardboard! Poor Christopher Reeve is hanging his head in shame being forced to shoot in this cardboard fort! Even the guy in the foreground has his back turned because he is ashamed at seeing Superman demean himself working in this junk set!

Hmn. That's a great photo, actually- What I was going by, was the set from another angle- where it looked/looks much bigger from the Caped Wonder gallery for SIV.
Compared to how I thought it looked when shot, (I thought it was smaller than even your picture) it is still bigger than I thought.

You do realize the crystal bank is a flat piece of propped up cardboard right?
It could only be filmed at one angle.

I can just imagine Reeve arriving on the set, seeing that cardboard crystal bank and going berserk. He probably screamed expletives at the crew and punched out Sydnie Furie!

It's not a patch on the original bank, but it's not a cardboard cutout. Great photo by the way, never seen that one before. Must have been such a comedown to go from the first film to this.

It's totally flat like cardboard! I know! Maybe Superman was hurt by Zod calling his charred crystal bank "scruffy" so he put up a cardboard crystal bank to keep up appearances and not be embarrassed by his guests bad manners! Anyway, why does Kal El say "same fate as Kryptot"... was Kryptot a neighboring planet of Krypton that blew itself up with nuclear weapons?
