I think that Routh looked the part of Superman pretty well until they gave him his haircut @ 2:46
Once the hair had been cut, (and Routh's weird mellon shaped head was exposed) it was clear that (visually) Routh was just not a match for Superman.
Should Routh have been given his walking papers after the cut?
Singer could have politely told Routh that they were going in a different direction, and then sent him a bill for the haircut.

Looks fine to me.

Routh looked a lot like Christopher Reeve, but he DIDN'T look like Superman.
Which is weird because Superman looks like Christopher Reeve.

Well, I'll share this: I preferred Routh's version of Clark to Reeve's. Even though it's clear that Singer probably gave the indications that he wanted to ape Donner's version as much as possible, there are slight differences that I liked more in Routh/Singer's version. Less broad.
I preferred Reeve's version of Supes to Routh's. More authoritive and confident. Also, to be fair to Routh, it's hard to take a step back for me, when the Reeve/Donner version of Supes was cemented in my brain from seeing the movies. He had gigantic shoes to fill. I'm glad that he enjoyed mostly good reviews. (As opposed to poor Cavill, who I actually also like as Supes).

Everything visually with Routh's Superman was just awful.
Awful awful awful.
The slicked brown hair (parted the wrong way) with that unnatural spit Curl forced down with a gallon of gel.
The Brown and Blue Costume... the S's stuck on everywhere that makes the suit look like a product.
The super-tight neckline which looks like it's choking poor Routh.
The rubbery brown shower-curtain cape stuffed into the tight neck which drapes horribly over Routh's fake shoulder muscles.
Literally everything was wrong about the look.
Terrible just terrible.
I hope Brandon writes his book someday and reveals how messed up the production was. Poor guy.

Overall, I didn't have any problem with the look in the film, but there are some things I do agree with you on this post: #1: The color palette was pretty weird (or at least how they chose to color correct it felt odd in most places) #2: The 's'es stuck everywhere I didn't like- but I didn't really notice them in the film... which I'm glad for. #3: The spit curl was/is a little funky. Keep or remove it? It seems like only STM and SII got it right. #4: The 'S' buckle and the lack of 'S' on the back. But- basically he looks the same (in the film) as Donner/Reeve's version. At least they didn't remove the red shorts!

Bizarrely, I don't think Superman looks like Christopher Reeve. In interviews, Reeve actually looks pretty normal. It's the hair and the costume that really makes him "pop" as Superman. If Routh had better hair (black) and proper colours in the costume, he would have looked better as Superman. I do, however, see the resemblance to Reeve in his Clark Kent outfit.

Christopher Reeve looked EXACTLY like Superman with hair and costume AND darn close in real life. Brandon Routh had this weird look to him... sort of like Christopher Reeve but off in many little ways to not look like Superman.

One of the main things that made Routh look weird were those bloody blue contacts that made him wear. He didn't look comfortable in them a lot of the time, and they look so unlike a real blue eye they are distracting. If they were dead set on a guy with brown eyes, they should have just had his eyes be brown, or digitally recolour them later.

What was Bryan Singer THINKING?
