New 4K releases of Superman I-IV are expected to come in April 2023. Warners is apparently going to give another pass at the first film after numerous complaints about the coloring on the initial 4K release. The Donner Cut of II is also apparently getting a 4K release as well. I hope this opportunity will be used to fix the shoddy looking effects that I understand were rushed due to the a deadline. I wish they would throw in a new 4K edition of Superman Returns, which would benefit from a new transfer. The latest 4K release of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is light years ahead in quality of the initial DVD and Blu-ray transfers.

Nice.
Yes that 2018 4K of STM has had a polarized response from the fan base.
Personally speaking, STM on 4K is defintely an acquired taste. The overall pallette throughout the entire duration of the film is subdued but the primaries do sporadically pop.....a case in point being the peripheral reds on the approach (just after the opening credits)to the Red Krypton Sun. Or Supe's cape when he saves Jimmy at the Dam.
Also the blacks are more pronounced on the 4K. Especially at the beginning ,like the blacks of space juxtaposed against the brilliantly white stars during the opening credits and again, on the approach to the Krypton Sun.
The 4K also has higher frequency detail , relative to the Blu Ray, but this is only apparent when you do side by side still comparisons.
On the down side,
Fans have pointed out that the glowing white suits of the Kryptonians(aswell as their faces) look practically anemic on the 4K, when compared to the Blu.And I would agree.
In other areas ,the Blu does have exagerated contrast boosting which is something that will please some and offend others.
E.g:
The white rears of the rocket's exhausts are blown out completely on the Blu. On the 4K, the rears of the Rocket's exhausts are clearly discernable but they look a bit pale , so it really is a question of trade offs.
Also(and now I am nerding out completely).....I wish they had left Supe's constume green as he swoops down to save the cat over Brooklyn......and when he approaches the dam to save Jimmy.
That's how it was presented originally and that's how it should be preserved. Yes I know Donner and co either ran out of time or did not have the technological know how to correct the chroma for those specific shots back in 78'.
Everything post 2001 on home video has had Supes with the color corrected to blue for those shots and it takes an old timer like me right out of the movie when I see it......cos that's not the way it looked lol! Most newcomers are oblivous of course and who cares anyway ....lol.
They could do a quick seemless branch on the disk , so fans can choose either a Supes in blue or a Supes in green for those specific shots......somehow I know that ain't gonna happen....lol!
Also when it comes to Sup II.....I hope WB leaves the original Saul Bass logo(white WB symbol on the black center on a total red background) intact right at the beginning.
Again totally takes me out of the movie to see the modern post 2000s WB logo at the beginning of SII(on every VHS,DVD and Blu Ray release post 2001 :
Yuk!
They left the original White symbol on total black background Saul Bass logo for STM:
......so why not leave SII's and SIII's original WB logo alone......lol
For the record, here in the UK in 1983, SIII was distributed by the now defunct EMI and had something akin to this logo at the beginning of the movie:
Don't think we will be seeing that on the 4K either!
My 1985 pan and scan laserdisc for SIII(released in the US only) actually has the same Saul Bass white/black center on total red background that SII had. So I guess the theatrical SIII prints in the US were the same.
Anyway enough nerding! Back to real world.
I hope WB knocks these new 4Ks out of the park. Here's hopin'.

To this day, I find it incredibly headscratching that there would be a giant audience for a 4K Superman IV theatrical version... (Or SIII for that matter)
But- I still hope of course that these 4K releases do great business to push WB for the pesky unreleased Blu ray letterbox version of SII.... and (one day) an extended official SIV that's not just two one minute 2d battle scenes!
