Just as TDK is almost r-rated (content-wise) to Batman Begin's pg-13...
With comments by Donner about how he would have made the Phantom Zone criminals SCARY and how Metropolis was going to get TRASHED- (and Ilya Salkind strangely says in his SII commentary, that in the battle of Metropolis 'people are dying, but we just don't show it')....
From watching HOW good TDK is - and how intense/scary the Joker is behind the whole film.... can't help but think: 'Damn, is this intensity/darkness sort of what Donner might have delivered with his villains in his sequel if he had the chance?'
((*In the Mankiewicz script, Non crushes a sheriff's assistant to death in a car, when they first arrive on earth!))
Did anyone else have a similiar reaction?

Well, I don't think TDK would have worked back in 1980. It would have gotten an R rating to be honest. The youth of today have become desensitized by violence and such that a PG-13 rating is the norm for most all action Flicks.
If Supes II had gone in that direction back in the 80's there would have been a lot of outraged parents. Parents are complaining now, just imagine how things would be if this was released during the Reagan Administration or if Supes II had the same tone.

I don't think Donner would have made it QUITE as intense as TDK- but of course far more serious than Lester's Metopolis battle--- I think his two 'intact' battle scenes with the criminals on the moon and in the white house are a good indication of what he would have done... which ARE intense- I have a guess that the innocent bystanders would have suffered similiarly on the street as seriously (and not comically) as the astronauts did on the moon sequence.

Body count or no body count, all I could think of while watching TDK was...
"this is the kind of sequel (in terms of consistency and quality, obviously the tone is all wrong for Superman) that STM deserved"

Mr Smith is right. Batman is a different character. Whilst we all seem to like the realistic touch for Superman (oddly even those who want Brainiacs and DarkSieds as villains)...
Body counts wouldn't work for a Superman movie... I'm not saying that there shouldn't be drama and peril or even death, just that it should be treated in a different way. IMHO.

There was meant to be a whole bunch of other destruction between then and finally getting to the White House. Would have been awesome. Yes. I also thought about that. I also thought about the two other instances: 1. After Non has crushed the officer in the car. She "advances" toward the other and tells him "I will keep you alive to play with." 2. Right before she approaches Zod and tells him he is the master of all he surveys (maybe it was filmed, we'll never know) She kills a man, and then walks into the oval office and tells Zod the "men here don't even try to resist anymore." I think Donner had a much darker vision in mind. I think he would have evened it out with humor as he did in the first film. But you also have to remember there TDK is politically darker anyway, as are the times, and TDK is a direct reflection of that. S2 would have used a totally different subliminal mindset. Sorry. I began to rant! ;D
