Interesting, Superman to leap off these pagesFlying defiantly into a digital world, DC Comics will launch a weekly series of superhero comic strips next month, printed on full-size newspaper pages like the old-fashioned Sunday funnies. The 12-week return to newsprint, called Wednesday Comics, makes its debut at comic-book stores July 8 and will offer 15 different stories for $3.99 in a broadsheet format, 14 inches by 20 inches. (New comic books are released across the USA on Wednesdays.) Creators include John Arcudi and Lee Bermejo on Superman, Brian Azzarello on Batman, Adam and Joe Kubert on Sgt. Rock, Paul Pope on Adam Strange, Dave Gibbons on Kamandi, Kyle Baker on Hawkman and a pairing of Neil Gaiman and Michael Allred on the obscure hero Metamorpho. All 12 weeks of the Superman strip will appear in USA TODAY as well, beginning July 8 with a full-page installment in the newspaper. The remaining 11 Superman strips will be available each Wednesday at usatoday.com."There's a certain romance to the history of the big old Sunday funnies that I wanted to try to recapture in Wednesday Comics," says DC art director Mark Chiarello. "Why not dust off the format and have a little fun?" www.usatoday.com/life/books/news/2009-06-15-wednesday-comics_N.htmThis is a sample of the art, www.bscreview.com/wp-content/gallery/wednesday-comics/wednesday-comics-dc.jpg i.usatoday.net/life/_photos/2009/06/15/dccomicsx-large.jpgthoughts? Great for Supes, I guess!

The whole Wednesday Comics thing looks awesome. Just AWESOME. Top notch creators being put on characters they wouldn't normally do.
Neil Gaiman and Mike Allred for Metamorpho! Kyle Baker on Hawkman! Paul Pope on Adam Strange!
Seriously, every single one of you should make it a point, even if you don't normally buy comics, to go out and buy all 12 issues of "Wednesday Comics". This is art. This is the equivalent of a band you love putting out an actual record on actual vinyl and you love them so much that you have to buy it, even though that can't go in your mp3 player.

Kinda kicks the Spider-Man strip in the ass, don't it?

This article is a couple of weeks old. Wanted to post it before but forgot. Any way, I liked what it said. This is only part of the interview. Click on the link to read the rest, Dan DiDio Talks Wednesday Comics!
Was it important to run the Superman strip by John Arcudi and Lee Bermejo in "USA Today" because the Man of Steel is the one DC icon that virtually everyone in America should be able to identify?
It's the wonderful thing about Superman. It is a worldwide brand. It's something everybody recognizes. Even the most casual reader or someone who doesn't know anything about comics will know something about Superman. And hopefully this brings them into our book and brings them into this format. And maybe it makes them appreciate what comics are all about a little bit more.
Is the story Arcudi and Bermejo are telling in the Superman strip one that will leave an impression with both casual readers and long-time fans?
I'll tell you right now, every single strip stands on its own right with a different sensibility. One of the great things about ["Wednesday Comics"] coming out is I can't wait for the arguments to start about which one is everybody's favorite and why. Because, I think those discussions about what makes comics great is what makes the whole industry fun to be a part of.
There's something for everybody inside this comic. The Batman story may feel a little bit older because it's from Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso. The Supergirl story from Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner captures all the cuteness of the character and is something every little kid would enjoy.
There's something for everybody in this book over the 12 weeks, week in and week out. That's what makes it great.www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=21656

This is out today folks.
It's gorgeous. It's art. There's no other way to describe it. This is a comic company doing the impossible for a company of this size...doing something that feels fresh.
Top notch talent, innovative format, epic win.
Bought two copies in case I want to frame a page.

Sorry to hear that, Keith. You know, they can probably save them for you, and you can pick them up once a month! Thank you for reminding me, Val! Read your post about 25 mins. ago, and just came back from picking my copy up. Loved that they added a pic of Supes on the front page.

Strangely, the Supes story was the one I was less impressed with. I've never been a huge fan of Bermejo's photo-real art style, and I think it's kinda off the mark for a project like this. But hey, it's still plenty cool.
Love the Batman art, and the Gaiman/Allred Metamorpho combination is a home run.
But, I have a sneaky feeling that Flash will be the best of the bunch. Did you notice that Flash ran out of his own strip and into the Iris West strip?!?!?!
