I might get punched in the mouth for this but Gerard may have THE best physique of any Superman. That guy was (and still is) in INSANE shape. The only thing he lacked was the size and height.
I think Cain kicks Welling's ass in terms of acting as Clark and as an actor in general. I give Cain flak but even he had his moments. Welling can be confused with a mannequin wearing lipstick and a black wig sometimes.
The funny thing is I think Smallville may be a slightly better show overall. L&C had the better first season but comparing Smallville's 7 years with L&C's 4, Smallville has the better track record.
The fact that they gave us a pretty awesome Green Arrow says a lot. They also used all the guest stars from the past well.
L&C did ONCE with Phyllis Coates. L&C just kinda wasted everyone from Adam West to Mark Lindsay Chapman, to Jack Larson.
On Smallville Lynda Carter, Chris Reeve, and Helen Slater were all put in pretty interesting roles.
A Bale/Routh team up? BRING IT. Nolan and Singer producing. Donner also producing or directing. Wolfgang Peterson directing. IT. WOULD. RULE.

'tallo, you speaketh the truth. For those who give Cain a rough time about being too short, Gerard is shorter...and it shows!
I'm not sure if I'd put Gerard's physique against say, Reeve's Superman 3 bod. But, it's worth discussing!
Spandex isn't flattering on ANYONE, so for Reeve and Gerry to look as powerful as they do in those suits (with no padding!) is exceptional.

Is Gerard that much shorter than Cain? They look about the same. Looking at those pics of Gerard at the SR premiere he looks about the same. I think since he's SuperBOY (even though he's college age) he can get away with it.
Cain never looked like a legit six footer to me like he's claimed to be. Welling is dwarfing him in that pic and Welling is about 6'2" to 6'3"
Have you seen Gerards abs? The guy was chiseled back then. I've never seen Reeve shirtless back then so I dunno if he had THAT kind of definition. I think Reeve had the perfect combo of definition and size in Superman III though. he was at his biggest in STM near the end but by III he just looked a lot more solid.

Cain had a pretty good build. Pretty much every chick had a crush on him in the early 90's, man. Just 'cuz he wasn't ripplin' with abs and such didn't mean he wasn't in great shape. heck, I'd love to be in the shape he was in.
And when the FUCK was he on Smallville?!? Who was he? Was it horrible? What?!?
I'd say the first season of LandC is better than the Flash. There are a LOT of really hokey episodes, but the music and the supporting cast usually saved them. John Shipp was mostly badass but a few episodes he was...uh...lame.

I could be wrong about Gerard, but for some reason he appears shorter to me.
Nothing wrong with Cain's physique. I think he got screwed by that costume, which really ain't flattering. Gerard's got him beat, though.
You know what? I'm either gonna buy or Netflix Season One of L&C this month, and watch it side by side with The Flash!!! Not to "judge" them. Just to enjoy 'em.

Gerard was a triathlete wasn't he? Cain was a pro athlete but Gerard was just in crazy shape. Gerard is STILL in good shape. Cain has kinda let himself go even though he is younger.
Flash season one just roundhouse kicks L&C
Better music, better production values, better effects, better costumes, better bad guys, better stories.
As good as Shea is Hamill at least matches him as The Trickster. After that you don't really HAVE that many good bad guys on L&C. Trask was ok. I don't think Tempus was around yet.
On The Flash you had Captain Cold, Mirror Master, The evil Nightshade, etc. The Ghost! That show ruled. They basically did a Sandman episode with Nightshade.
Pays also seemed like a better actress than Hatcher to me...both were hot though.
Shipp just seemed more solid in BOTH roles. Cain could barely get Clark. Shipp's Flash just seemed far more heroic.
The pilots are about equal...but I think we got to know Barry Allen far better than Clark Kent.

Flash was pretty formulaic, though. Other than Shipp and Pays (and of course Hammil) there isn't much in the way of a great supporting cast. Personally I LOVE Season One Jimmy and Lane Smith as Perry. And Tracey Scoggins as Cat.
Now, I've watched Flash waaaay more recently than L&C Season One. But I seem to think they're pretty equal. I'm actually kinda psyched to watch them together, though!
Flash certainly had better music, and despite the "Gotham" like Central City, I'll take it over the L&C Metropolis, which always looked like Hoboken to me. (and I LIKE Hoboken)

You don't think M Emmet Walsh was a good supporting actor? he was in Blade Runner for cripes sake. I forget the guy who played Lt. Garfield but I though the played a better Perry White than lane Smith did...but that's down to writing. Murphy and Bellows were basically comic relief but they did it well. Alex Desert I can take or leave as Julio. No worse than Landes. Tim Thomerson was just in the pilot but he's the man.
Joyce Heiser was a guest star as Megan Lockheart but I think she might have been HOTTER than Hatcher or at least as hot.
BOTH shows had Richard Belzer but I think Flash used him more and better as Joe Kline than L&C did as Inspector Henderson.
The Flash has Robert Shayne (Inspector Henderson from AOS) as a recurring character. That alone puts it over for me because Shayne was awesome.

Christ, I LOVED Flash's supporting cast. Murphy and Bellows, man? I'd watch them on their own TV show. Julio, the captain, yeah...that was a heck of a good cast.

L&C and Smallville have one thing in common: Take the best six episodes, and you could have a strong mini-series.
Of course, why do that when you can piss off your audience with a bunch of lousy filler episodes? </sarcasm>

Cain was on an episode of Smallville last year. He played an immortal. Don't know if he had blood of kings, though.
Welling, to be honest, has a lot of potential. I just think he just gets handed crap to act on. The guy is 6'3", almost 6'4" and has a frame close to Reeve. I've always thought he had a better frame than Routh. Routh owns Welling when it comes to acting, though. But again, I think it's the material he's given. As he gets older he looks more and more the part of Superman. Just opinion, I know I'm going to get bashed. Bring it on.

Cain played Vandal Savage. Great episode!
I agree about Welling. The dude had so much potential. I think most of his problem is what he's given to work with, and how he's directed. He's got a great look, and a great build.
During the first season of Smallville, I woulda been totally ok with him as Superman. I just got sick and tired of all the garbage.

The amount of garbage that's been on Smallville can fill the entire city of Detroit.

Cain was VANDAL SAVAGE?!?!?!?! WHAAAAAAA?!?!?! Was...was it actually good? I don't get it. Huh? Really? Christ. Why didn't anyone say anything about this? You fucks. I would've watched that one. Welling has potential indeed. I wouldn't mind to see him in the last episode of Smallville in the Superman costume doing heroic stuff. That'd be kinda cool to see how he'd do.

It wasn't a bad episode.
Smallville averages two good episodes a year, and this was one of 'em.

i think the reason people rip on SR suit more tha L&C's is that SR was a big budget movie made to be seen by millions, not a 90's TV show. I mean for such a massive film the suit in SR was a real let down for me, the brown cape etc.
I love the first two seasons actually. I liked the replacement jimmy too, though i prefered the first one.
People can say what they want about Cain but he was in great shape, he was a pretty bulky guy, but gerard christopher was built and ripped, great physique though i must confess to hating superboy.
The more i watch the show the more i like Shea as luthor, hes really a great actor, very threatening in the role and hes maybe the only one i look at in the series and think he could have really went on to big things.
I really liked Lane Smith as PerryWhite too.
I dont have much time for smallville, i could never get into it though i must admitt ive enjoyed a few episodes on occasion. I didnt know dean cain was in smallville either, i would have definitely watched that one.

Um...that makes NO sense. George Reeves had a Better Superman suit and they had a FRACTION of L&C's budget and that was 50 years ago. The Flash had a better suit than L&C and it was made 3 years before Gerard Christopher and John Newton wore better suits than Cain. Cain's suit was just cheap and ass ugly. Way worse than Rouths. None of the red in Cain's suit matched. The boots were wrinkly and had laces early on like rain boots or something. The belt was made out of...I dunno...cardboard and was square. The blue suit looked like blue umbrella material or something. The cape was like velcroed on early on. The difference between all these other costumes (even Rouths) and Cains is that they look professional. Even on a tv budget I don't know what the heck they were thinking. Its like they were TRYING to make Superman look like a jackass. And yes I know that Martha made the suit for Clark but thats still no excuse.

The Supes suit DOES look cheap. I guess I'm the only one who liked the laces on the early costume.
I gotta say though, I always had a major problem with the Flash suit. Sure it's faithful, and I love the GOLD trim on it. But I absolutely despise the bulkiness of it.
What's worse is that Shipp had a PERFECT build for the Flash to begin with! This was just kinda the post-Batman curse, I guess.

Well let's face it, L&C was not really much about Superman was it? It was more to do with Lois and Clark, which is probably why the crappy suit. To further my point, even Smallville has a similiar manner in that respect (no suit at all!).

You cant asl why the SR suit takes so much flack and then complain about the colours in the L&C costume for fecks sake. I dont like the L&C costume but i prefer it over george reeves version.

Gotta disagree with you, Kris. The Reeves costume is an improvement over Alyn's...but the L&C suit had another 40 years to improve on the design, PLUS the great movie and Superboy tv show designs, and gave us something kinda cheap lookin'.
