So what do most of you guys make of this TV show? I know it was throughly discussed on the old board but it cant hurt to go again can it?
Firstly, i like cain, I think his superman is embarrassing, he doesnt look the right, the suit, the folding of the arms, the hair. But....I really like his portrayal of Clark, i mean im surprised at how much I like his Clark.
I like Terri Hatcher, I especially like Lane Smith as Perry, loved the whole Elvis thing they had going on.
I thought John Shea was superb as Luthor, ya know I actually like him better than Spacey, think hes a very good actor.
I thoroughly enjoy the first 2 seasons, after that its a bit tougher to watch to say the least ;D

I only caught the first couple of seasons. Then I started working at a movie theater and I wasn't able to watch it since I worked every Sunday night. But from what I remember it was okay. It had it's moments. Didn't care too much for Cain, though. I prefer Welling over Cain any day.

Season one was great. It was a lot of fun.
Recasting Jimmy and canning the character of Cat in season 2 was lame. Michael Landes does not look like Cain. That was a lame excuse. Cat was annoying at times, but with a show with so few characters, it was a mistake.
Lex Luthor in season one was also really good. But they just had to muck it up by killing him off and then bringing him back to life for brief appearances.
The rest of the show, meh. The Tempus episodes were good, though.
After that, all I can remember are two painful things:
Eating frogs Picking out drapes

Its in a dead heat with Smallville for the worst interpretation of Superman ever put on film. Shea was the best part of the show but the writers didn't get Lex Luthor on so many levels.
He wouldn't be in love with Lois Lane...he wouldn't be in love with anyone.
That's why Clancy Browns Luthor totally handed him his ass on TAS and JL. That group "got" Lex better than anyone. They answered the question of what IS his ultimate goal.

Season one is pretty fantastic. For a show in the early 90's, it was quite entertaining.
Everything else was weak. Weaaaaaaaak.
Season one had an AWESOME cast, I really loved that cast. Cain was awful as Superman as we all know for the most part (I liked some of his scenes) but his Clark was precisely how he should've been, he nailed the confident Clark of the comics.
How long was the show on? I think I watched the first four seasons and saw a few of the fifth? Is that all there was? I think so. Man, it got bad.

I can watch bits of season 3, but by the time you get to the 4th season its pretty poor.

It died with the 4th season, but in season 3, you knew where it was going.
Cain's Superman suit was so bad. Very shiny and that S ginormous. All he ever did as Superman were:
Cross his arms Look smarmy Walk over and stop the bad guy Cross his arms again
I accept the lame Superman because that isn't the premise of the show. It's Clark first and Superman second, and Cain's Clark was well done.

People should just shut up about Rouths suit cause Cain's came from the 5 dollar bin. Lois went from sexy to utterly annoying by the end and its clear nobody wanted to be there. The wretched lord Nor/New Krypton arc showed the writing was on the wall. The clone arc was just awful.
Thank God this period of DC on screen is over.

True that. Not only did they dink around with Superman, they also majorly pissed off the show's fans.
That whole clone/frog eating arc, what a huge joke. ABC had this huge hype campaign for the Clark/Lois wedding, and it was a total bait-and-switch. I don't know if the viewers ever forgave them for that.

That's a given.
The ratings went down, down, down after that.

I always liked terri hatcher. John Shea was brilliant though i must admitt.

Except when they gave him ridiculous material to work with. He really deserved better. Thats what happens when you let a low rent romance novelist in charge of your superman show.
Gerard Christopher shoudla been Superman. The Flash was better, even Swamp Thing was better than Lois and Clark. Shipp didn't look like a total tool in his Flash suit at least.

The first season is excellent. It's the only one I own and I have no intention of getting the others. No Luthor, a replacement Jimmy, no Cat and an overall shift in the direction of the series? No thank you.
The weakest aspects unforunately were Superman himself, and the lack of threatening villains, the latter being accented by the loss of Luthor.
As I understand it John Shea didn't want to continue flying back and forth between NY and LA and asked to leave the show. L&C was never the same without him but it did result in the amazing two-part season finale which probably wouldn't have gone down the way it did if Luthor has remained a regular character.

Indeed, that's was a huge missed opportunity: not casting Gerard as Superman because he's already been on Superboy. Cain was a better choice than Kevin Sorbo though! And I love The Flash. Wasn't it great when superhero TV shows used to actually be ABOUT the superheroes? *cough*SmallvilleBirdsofPreyAquaman*cough*

Love the first season of this. Cain really gets a bum rap. Hatcher is my favorite Lois ever. Shea is brilliant. The first season is tightly written, smart, funny, and sexy. Sure there are some clunkers, but ANY show has 'em in it's first season.
In fact, I'll say the first season of Lois And Clark is better than ANY season of Superboy, ANY season of Smallville, and is at least as good, if not better than The Flash TV series (which I also love).
It was a pretty steep and rapid decline after that first season, though. Bad by the third. Inexcusable by the fourth.

Hard to do since they lifted an entire episode from the Flash at least once that I'm sure of.

The show is a lot more tolerable when you just think of it as a romantic comedy rather than an action show. After all, it's called Lois and Clark. The character of Superman is an afterthought. As Cain said, unlike all other performances of Clark Kent/Superman, his Clark is the real person and Superman is the disguise, rather than Superman being the real character and Clark being a disguise.
Still though.....the suit sucked!

Man i still don't get why SR gets so much flak when their take on the Clark/Superman/Kal-El core personality was so much more interesting than John Byrne's 2 dimensional crap. Its like Cain and Welling are in a horse race to see who could suck more. Looks like Tom has a slight lead. Lets wash that nasty taste out with some awesomeness.

The Dean Cain episode of Smallville was actually pretty good.
Yeah, the suit was pretty lousy in L&C. I actually prefer the suit from the pilot episode with the smaller "S" and the shorter, laced-up "golden age" style boots.
Gerard had the best costume (and 2nd best physique!) of pretty much any live-action Superman, though. Don't know why they didn't just use that.
I am an unapologetic defender of that first season, though. It was "as advertised", and about as good of a live action superhero show I've ever seen. I make no excuses whatsoever for the later shenanigans.

I like Welling, but I have to admit, that was freaking hilarious! Lets wash that nasty taste out with some awesomeness. Man, I so want to see these two on the big screen at the same time doing a freaking awesome Batman/Superman flick! That's my dream right there! I hope it happens! God, please make it happen!

YES! YES! YES!
A Bats vs Supes flick will suck ass. Supes get infected with Red Kryptonite and Bats has to fight him. BAH! A Justice League movie with these two and a great supporting cast would be ideal! Bring in some great baddies and you have one freaking awesome movie!

I have a great World's Finest annual from around 84-85, drawn by the legendary Alex Toth and written by Elliot Maggin (my FAVORITE Superman writer), where Superman makes a comment about Bats to the effect of "That guy right there is my best friend, and I trust him with my life".
It's fine if he "doesn't approve of his methods" when they first meet, but by an hour in, they need to trust each other and be awesome together. Like, a buddy superhero flick.
